Bridgeport is a complicated marvel. And to think, engineers drafted all the mechanicals out with sliderules and pencils. Also, I have witnessed a number of very good mechanics struggle with the repair manuals over the 45 years I was a machinist. These videos are a true blessing for future mechanics.

that patternmakers took those drawings, figured out core boxes, prints, patterns... someone had to setup lathes to cut screws, set up stinking big planers to run through body castings... sometimes... it just seems a little bit insane...

Hello, thank you for the super thorough videos and awesome diagrams on your website. I just picked up a 2hp vari-speed machine, early 80's vintage and the quill sticks in the housing at various points of travel. The whole machine was thoroughly crusted with dried out oil and I have been trying to spray the thing down with LPS #2 in the hope of getting the crust loosened up, which has been working pretty good. One thing I have noticed is that the quill skirt is chewed up right where the quill stop hits the edge of the part and I suspect that this is binding up in the casting. Is there anything else in particular I should look for that may be causing the binding?
@HWMachRepair2 жыл бұрын
Paul, The only other thing that would be causing the binging, in your case, would be the dirt and grime and possible metal chips that have gotten up there. You will need to remove the quill and clean the inside of the housing and the outside of the quill. You can give us a call if you have any other questions 1-800-285-5271

quill skirt. i think thats what it may be... only here cus i wanted to see if a bridgeport has some way of adjusting the sliding fit of that quill... i havent got a bridgeport, just a fancy drill press advertised as a mill... and the quill to housing fit leaves MUCH to be desired. i was hoping id find bridgeports run something like split conical bushes on tapered seats or something, so you can snug em up tight... but it doesnt look like it, just that... quill skirt. anyway, i still think its a worthwhile mod to a horrid little mill that has to make do until i happen across a decent BP or clone of... man. when you look at teh design of these machines, you gotta remind yourself... this was all in BC... before computers. everything drawn by hand, visualised inside heads, and transferred to raw stock... like most anything prior to the 80s...
