The homemade cleaner is what is breaking down the varnish on the table. Best thing to use is just a damp cloth with dish detergent. Same thing happened to my table. It has a cloudy film that won't come off because we used the wrong cleaners.

I know how you feel about the furniture issue. I have had mine since 2009. But, I can't justify getting new stuff when mine still looks good. Plus, I feel like I will never have the money to update my furniture. But, I am grateful mine still looks nice and that I have a furnished home.

It may be from the heat of your dishware. I use a tea towel, an iron on low heat (no steam) and voila! Cloudiness on my dining table is gone.

With my wood table, using paper plates with hot food will damage the varnish. It’s the hot steam that is released while resting on the table.

When my youngest daughter was still at home raising my granddaughter her room was such a disaster I use to just shut her door. Her room was worse than your daughters.i refused to clean it plus I don’t like going through her personal items. Everything looked fantastic after you cleaned. I dusted today. I have a 3 story log home so it was quite the project!
