As to your comparison although not relevant to popularity which was the topic, Drummond shoots better than 39% from the field and cosnsitently makes layups, the easiest shot in basketball. Angel is the textbook definiton of a "developmental player" who is at least 2 years away from being anywhere close to as good as she believes she already is. There a small market in basketball for a rebounder who cant shoot. Or a Power Forward who cant make a layup, the #1 job of a front court player. Her rebounding is impressive although a secondary skill and rebounds = 0 points if you miss the second chance opportunity. Lets see where she is in 2 more years if she works to improve, or quits the league to host a game show on a cable network, which seems to be her priority at present.

Growth in women's pro basketball in the USA was already happening (to a very substantial degree because of the arrival of CC). Adding games. Adding franchises. Broadcast revenue on the increase. Improved attendance. Improved viewership. All the energy for growing the women's game should have gone into improving the WNBA (and there is a lot of room for improvement). No one asked for Unrivaled. No one wanted Unrivaled but the players. It is a league for the players, not the fans of real basketball. Listen to the people involved in Unrivaled talk about it. It's all about what the players want. They talk like this is what they deserve, with no consideration as to whether what they are offering is a saleable product that can pay for itself. Everyone with a brain saw this coming. First weeks are always 2x the viewer of average but 3x means even those who thought they might like it didn’t. And the tv deal isn’t 3 years guaranteed it has clauses in it were tnt can pull out after the first season and save their losses by replacing it with a program that will get more views and as a result have hiring ad buy costs. But let’s be real this league was never gonna succeed. Anyone who knows basketball knows 3v3 is not fun to watch. It’s a last resort for when you don’t have enough for 5v5. We don't know the terms of the TV deal with TNT, I would bet that some of the money is tied to viewership. You are making a big assumption that they are going to have the money to have a second season, I would bet costs are in the $30M range. Players alone are in the $9M to $10M range, then you have all the management, staff, facilities, and other expenses. The big concern are the bad ratings going to carry over to the WNBA? Everyone has assumed that the WNBA is going to keep growing after last year but it could easily fall back to where it was before because the games are behind a paywall.

Unrivaled isn't doing much to hold on to those viewers though.

I watched the second overall game. I found it slow and pedantic. With only 3 a side, and a full court, it felt empty and un inspiring. Run - shoot, run -shoot, run - shoot. I was looking at the game summary near the end of the video, and something that I think the league (all leagues actually) should do is do what they did in the old days (when the 3 point shot first came in), list percentage of 2 pointers in one column and percentage of 3 pointers in another column. breaking them down individually and then combining them if they want. I think that would be very interesting.

I don’t like the concept. Rivalries are a big part of what makes sports great. They players aren’t treating it like off-season fun. There are no rivalries and that’s a big problem. No reason to watch a competition if the outcome is meaningless. They aren’t representing cities, brand schools, etc… Further, if they struggled to find viewers to watch the WNBA then why would they believe that full court 3v3 was going to interest viewers?! SMH If the men couldn’t get ratings playing 3v3 half court using high profile former college players & street players then it should tell them that there is no market for it.
