Disaster on UK's Longest Sleeper Ferry 🇬🇧

The journey to UK's most mysterious island continued as myself and ‪@baldandbankrupt‬ headed to the Shetland Islands! However in order to get there we had to get a sleeper ferry, but this isn't just any ferry this is UK's longest sleeper ferry for 14 hours! From Aberdeen all the way to the Shetland Islands we got our tickets for around £50 which apparently included a 'sleeping pod' however 'sleeping' wasn't to be a thing on this journey.

The airplane was built in 1962. The landing gear would not come down, the pilot used the emergency manual system but only the right hand wheel extended and locked. The pilot could not get the remaining gear down so he made a gear-up landing and occupants evacuated over the wings emergency exit. The French company who owned the plane removed parts from the plane and the body etc. was abandoned in a part of the airport where it sat for 26 years until the runway was extended. A local resident saved the plane and that's where it sits today.

My very first job after I left school was on Northlink Ferries on the mv Hjaltland where I worked as a Steward, then became the night barman. Being a lifeline, the ferry can carry as few as one single passenger in a crossing in the winter as it will be carrying goods for Shetland Islands such as supplies for the Tesco store in Lerwick.

I did this crossing too!! It took us 12hrs! Due to not booking a cabin, we had to hang around til the eating area emptied for somewhere to sleep !!!

Went to the Shetland Islands for 4 days once. It was the longest month I've ever experienced. It was very scenic. But I prefer to go to places that take more than a couple of hours to drive across. Like I said, it was nice. It's almost like the last frontier. 👍👍

Aww man, always get a cabin on that ferry. The pods are just a room full of ignorant, snoring, manky farters. Cabins are actually decent and can sleep good, well worth the money if they’re available 😂😂 Great video as always!

Well ferry from Germany to Finland takes 3 days and with Tallink ferries you get same kind of experience but pods are actually mostly broken/unusable and Estonian janitors will literally kick you if you try to sleep in public areas! Restaurant heavily overpriced and there is a kiosk for sandwitches but they keep it open only for about 2 hours a day… miss that slot and budget traveller can only buy peanuts from the bar. Horrible place to be… I almost would rather be in India, but at least you wont get food poisoning cause well you mostly will starve.

When I lived in Manitoba I often wondered what motivated the Scottish settlers many from the Shetlands to settle in the then uninhabited Canadian wilderness. Now I understand why.

It was P &O before… there was an issue and Northlink is a new takeover of the route. Islanders get a discount on the sleeper… I have my own video from just when lockdown started easing shetlands was the far away place you could get at the time. Menu doesn’t change much but the islands are absolutely beautiful I’d love to live there… it’s one of the better ferry routes… try a cabin next time much nicer… don’t be cheap be comfortable

@@magnushutchison4920 Fair enough! :) I'd assume that, when referring to, "The Shetlands" is often used as "Shetland" is comprised of more than a couple of islands... ;). But, all those comprise "Shetland", so it'd be a bit of an unnecessary label. Similar to folks saying "Hawaii" when speaking of "The Hawaiian Islands" as as a group. Hawaii is just the "Big Island", as it's also called locally. Hopefully something locals don't get too bent out of shape about when tourists use "The..." and pluralize "Shetland". Hopefully I'm lucky enough to go visit some day, and make an effort to just use Shetland. Thanks!
