I had a similar experience about 6 months after my wife passed away from cancer. I was sent halfway across the country to work on a project that took 6 weeks to complete. I was looking forward to getting back home and having a nice elk steak for supper, but as I got out of my truck and walking to the back door of my house, the stench grew stronger and stronger. As I unlocked the back door, leading into my laundry room, then upon opening it, I was forced back outside, knowing exactly what was causing the smell. An upright freezer with well over 600lbs of wild game, elk, venison, and bison had spoiled and was leaking out the bottom of the door, soaking through the grouting of the ceramic flooring, and saturated the subflooring of my house. Long story short, I made a vow to myself to never allow that much food spoil again, because of depending on electricity. From then on, if I plan on storing any meat for longer than a month, it gets either pressure canned, dehydrated, cured & smoked, made into sausage, or pickled.

I feel your pain, Mike. After Hurricane Katrina, we lost two deep freezers and the refrigerator freezer full of shrimp, fish, beef, pork, chicken and vegetables. We came back home after evacuating, I duct taped the chest freezers closed and put them out on the curb for the people who were picking up hurricane debris. I had more than $400 in lost food. One freezer was brand new but I knew we'd never get the smell out of it. Sorry y'all are having to experience this.

I had the same type of loss and was able to claim a homeowners insurance claim. Lost two freezers and a fridge. Adding up everything I was able to get a sizable check back.

Sorry for the lost food. We also experienced loss from a long power outage. We bought a generator and not too long ago Mocreo sensors for the freezers. You can control the sensor temperature warnings over an app.

Would be a great idea to have back up plans for power supply to all electric machines/ things that draw power. Get some solar panels, battery back up.

Oh my goodness, that's too bad. One time, when we had a power outage, the electric Co said we could tell them, and they would replace. They would send a check for your estimate of loss. You could try that from your electric company? Or if not, maybe some homesteading kind of company will help with lost food? Not a fun project!

If you are able to plug if refrigerator back up and turn it on, let it freeze the contents and then removal is so much easier and the smell won't be as bad. My husband and I helped a friend move after something like this happened to him.

Not overly helpful in a long-term power outage, but having a temperature alarm on freezers will let you know if they break or are unplugged.

The official reports only state confirmed deaths, specifically from the hurricane itself. Not from injuries that couldn’t be tended, food that was contaminated, medications that couldn’t be delivered, shock from the realization of what was happening causing heart attacks or other stress related illnesses that could not be treated in time…. Confirmed deaths. As in, there is a complete body and the cause and time of death can be determined. There are a lot more bodies that have not been found, have not been autopsied, are not in enough pieces to identify, are not burried under ten feet of silt (where they will probably stay)… I am not there, I’m in Canada, and I get that you are trying to quell some of the rampant misinformation and scaremongering that has arisen lately. But it stands to reason that official sources have to stick to official numbers, and official numbers are never going to be the same as the actual death toll, and even if they are, it will take several years to do. At this point? The number of missing plus the official death toll, is going to be a lot closer to the accurate death toll.

Be careful feeding the dog chicken - chicken bones can splinter and get caught in their airway or esophagus if they chew up the bones etc. But it looks like he swallowed it! And watch him for digestive issues since it could still be bad - if not good for you- not good for him!

The dirty walls and floors and door facings and things like that look filthy inside as well as out. Those freezers looked filthy. I hope they don't reuse them for next seasons dishonor of the lives of the animals who ended up in the burn pile. Everything just looks dirty. all the time. I wouldn't eat anything from their garden subscription just because of the mess they wash and prepare things in. I just notice detail I was an inspector. This place is filthy

Well, if we accept that weather can be manipulated by humans, then yes whatever we do to it, has a lot of unforseeable consequences. I accept that humans have changed the composition of the atmosphere enough to change it, and that yes, that does mean that storm will be stronger, more often. Fires, droughts, floods, snow, tornadoes, etc. that’s the whole point. We don’t need to think about some alien ray technology to know that. We’ve been trying to prepare for what is inevitable, and make it less difficult. But yeah, a lot of people who aren’t paying attention to the increasingly strident alarms from people who have very good evidence that we should be alarmed? There’s going to be a lot of dead people. Dead lands, dead animals, dead crops, etc.
