Disaster Strikes The Cherry Wood Turning

A small disaster in a piece of Cherry could have turned this into firewood.
I came up with a method to try and save it Watch till the end to see if I am able to save it.

Nice recovery. That is one of those times where one has to make a decision whether something is worth recovery efforts or should be abandoned. You made the right decision for this piece, it looks really nice.

Thanks Josh. Once things get rounded and get a consistent cut the sound becomes steady. A change in the sound hitting a crack or a knot can stand out. I got lucky with this one but I think it was a combination of a new vibration as well. Thanks for watching, Gary

Very innovative means of repairing the crack with the disk. It is nice when we naturally/automatically use our problem solving skills and not just rely on what we have conventionally been shown.

Glad you were able to save this one Gary. Your experience with this bowl is why I almost always use a tenon. They are more work to finish the bottom than a recess but they work better IMO holding the wood onto the lathe. Cherry is such beautiful wood and you showed that with this piece!

Thank you Stuart. I would say I use a tenon the majority of the time. I also use hot glued on tenons and almost did that for this piece. But a recess will work fine on most woods. Cherry does not offer a lot of strength though. Take care, Gary

I'm glad you were able to save it, Gary. Cherry is one wood where I can't trust recesses. I realize your piece was older, as well. The nub design was great & I might need to borrow it. I just got a piece of Mountain Ash ready and mounted for a live edge bowl, when I get in the shop next week. That was a good demonstration of precise turning on an imperfect surface.

Thank you Jay I was happy I was able to save it as it is meant for a gift for my friend who had the tree growing in his yard. My plan all along was to fill the recess like I showed. I just finished another piece of Mimosa and I used a recess on it and filled it with a piece of Cherry. This Cherry recess cracking has not turned me off from recesses. I only use them when I start with a small piece just to keep it from getting smaller. A hot glued on tenon is another option I had thought of and maybe should have done that. Nice Gary! I had the same experience. I broke the mortise. I glued the broken piece back on. Then I used your idea to hot glue a tenon on the bottom so I could chuck it up again without using the mortise. Thanks for sharing your ideas! They have come in very handy!!!

"Things don't always turn out the way you want them to." I think I say something similar with EVERY LAST BOWL I MAKE. When I post my bowls to my feed (just for my friends to see) I always detailt he problems I experienced, how I got around them and, of course, point out all the defects. I'm documenting and sharing my learning process. YOU are amazing, always learning, AND amazing. With that said, please keep these words in mind: "The true measure of a system can only be caluclated when critical failures occur." Fine, those are my words, my mantra, but they ring true. You can't tell how good someone is if everything works perfectly. You can only judge their skill when you see how they adjust to adversity. I learned so much from watching you adjust.

Thank you very much Michael and your words ring true. Case in point I served a 5 year apprenticeship to become a wood patternmaker. At the end of that I became a journeyman patternmaker. I was told during that whole time at the end is when you really start learning the trade. That was so true as the owner of the small shop I worked out turned me loose to continue to learn. It got to the point where he was asking my advice on what I saw in a drawing(very complex drawing) that boosted my confidence and I kept on learning till I retired 11 years ago. I strive to learn something new every time I go out in my shop. While working on an upcoming turning I changed a few things on what I was doing for the better. I will share some of that in the video. Wow Gary, if you have to suffer a disaster, may it be only a small one, and recoverable! It is interesting to see how you recovered the piece, thank you for sharing for us all to learn your methods - I love the simplicity of sticking a disc into the recess (and admit that I would not have thought of it!) Thank you David and I wish I would have shown how easy that was to do. But till I do show it all I did was used double stick tape on a wood tenon in the chuck and place a piece of cherry against it. I then turned that to the right diameter and thickness to fit the recess. Very easy to do. Thanks for watching, Gary

Saved with glue 😊, when i saw the title i thought oh no cherry bark whiplash , i got caught today when sand paper slipped on a winged bowl , lots of blood but sticky tape on hand saved my finger for another day 😂😂😂 , lovely cherry bowl Gary 👏👏👏👏

Also it is a good idea to check a recess or a tenon while you are turning. Especially on wood that is not dry because of movement. But this was dry and did not have much strength. Looks great I was waiting for that crack to split the whole thing into pieces thank god you got away with only the little mishap with the recess and you were able to fix that because even though I was waiting for things to go completely to pieces I like to see projects turn out and no body having to duck and dive out of the way your bowel turned out great nice job Papa

I could see the crack only going down an inch at the most so that was not a concern. And the fact I was hollowing the inside I was not in the line of fire. I did not expect the recess to crack but that is cherry for you. Not very strong grain and the wood was very dry. I should have done my first thought and that was hot glue a tenon on. And the reason for that and the recess was to keep the bowl as tall as it was. But I think it looks fine a little shorter. One day I took 3 pieces off and tossed them because of cracks. Lovely bowl. Thought for sure it would be the top that gave you an issue. The one good thing was that the recess gave way early enough that you could put it back on the screw and make a repair. I like the shortened design better anyway. Great work on a lovely bowl.

Just finished a set of 4 segmented cherry salad bowls for a family member Gary. Was using Coles Jaws to hold the bowl to finish the bottom. On bowl #3, it popped out of the Coles Jaw, bounced up and hit me in the face knocking my face shield off. Luckily no real damage to the bowl but a few small nicks that sanded out easily and no injuries to me other than some embarrassment. I did change the grippers on the jaws and finished without incident. Was an eye opener indeed and it happened so quickly too.

Good save with this one Gary. Came out looking really nice. Have had many design changes myself since i started, some of them quite severe. So far i have only ever had one that didn't make it and that was because of bad resin mixing. the resin stayed tacky and would bleed out. As always thanks for sharing cheers Bruce

Thank you very much Bruce. I have no experience with resin and wood turning but I have more experience with resins than I care to think of. We used at work to make core boxes for the wood patterns we made. It was some pretty nasty stuff so I stay away from it. I had a bad experience with resin because I let an apprentice mix some stuff up for me. Oh and another one about smoked us out with a bad mixture. Thanks for watching, Gary

Thanks so much Bill. Cherry is not the strongest and I will just hot glue a tenon on if I am concerned about loosing much of the height. But if it would have been a bigger piece I would have used a tenon. But even then not all that strong of a wood. Happy I could save it as I want to give it to my friend if I get a chance to see him. Gary saw this coming. I had a maple live edge just split down the middle as I was finishing the inside. I had warning sounds but chose to ignore clicking and hollow noise it was making. Fortunately it split after I removed the gouge and had hit the stop. I glued it back together but the walls were to thin. I was apprehensive so decided to set it aside. It isn’t worth getting hurt. Onto the next piece.

Thanks Kevin. I could see the crack at the top edge and it only went down an inch so that was no big concern. The recess was not visible so it was a surprise when I thought I felt something strange so I stopped and so it had split most of the way off. The fact it was fine while doing the outside was I had tail stock support the whole time. I should have done what I was thinking of and that was to hot glue a tenon on so I could keep the height it had. Thanks for watching, Gary

Nice job Gary. I hardly ever use a mortise… for that exact reason… and I feel like, when completed, I feel like there’s a hole in the bottom. But that’s just my opinion.

Thank you Martin and it is a good opinion. The main reason I use a mortice is if I do not have much thickness on a piece and I do not want to loose what I have making a tenon. After that I do like filling it with a disk which you will see again soon. The other option which I thought of was hot gluing a tenon on and then the bottom will be done. Which you also will be seeing soon. I normally am not worried about the mortice giving way but I did have a little concern since it was Cherry. So maybe no more recesses on Cherry....but no promises LOL Thanks for watching and your opinion as it is a very good one. Gary
