I turn a beautiful piece of Mimosa. The turning part took less than 10 minutes. This not counting the sanding or finishing but that was pretty fast as well.
A perfect Craft Show or Gift
Finished with Zinsser Seal Coat and Zinsser Shellac

We cut down a dead mimosa about 10 years ago. If I had known, then what I know now I probably would’ve kept everything a little bit I could have. That is simply gorgeous.

Thank you Lynda. If we had only known so many things. I would have kept the 1950 Chev 2dr. Hardtop I had. We did have 2 Leland Cypress trees cut down 10 years ago. I was going to keep a bunch of that but it is rather plain looking. So it became firewood. Thanks for watching, Gary

Boy, as soon as you hit that with sanding sealer it just popped! Beautiful wood! It's amazing how fast some of these small turnings can go, especially when you can turn at a fast speed. Great finish on that little beauty, Gary! Great job, my friend, keep'em coming! 😀 Phil

Thank you Phil. It was looking kind of drab but I knew from the last piece of Mimosa it would wake up. It woke up as nice as can be. Small is good especially after doing the end grain version of this wood. I think it was a bit too much for my shoulder so back to same smaller ones and glue ups. Thanks for watching my friend, Gary

@ThePapa1947 Yes, you kind of need the turning pace of Richard Raffan to squeeze bowls into a time frame under an hour. I think incorporating a little bit at key points is perfect. And I've always enjoyed your edits for the amount of sound and real time turning you include before you quiet it and speed it up.

Excellent work Gary. Really pretty result. I am a long way from a 10 minute turning. I find that if I hurry, mistakes are made, and injuries happen. So I usually try to take my time. But it's good to know that a pretty, small bowl can be produced in a short time. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Mark. I do not rush my turnings either and was surprised how little time this took to make. I spent more time putting the finish on it than turning. I sometimes take days to do a turning. Such as doing segments. So it was sure fun to do something quick and easy. Thanks for watching, Gary

Beautiful timber Gary. Don’t get much mimosa down here, however it it’s a serious invasive bush in Nth Oz.looks a lot like wattle which I turn. Upon investigation it’s hard to tell the 2 species apart. Your video is great as usual and your turning is almost mesmerising. Love your work. I still find your older videos that I haven’t seen occasionally. Thanks for sharing. Oh by 5he way a quick turn. Our wattle is rather a hard wood and can be difficult at times to turn. This mimosa didn’t seem that difficult. You mentioned that it was hard wood though.

What a beautiful grain, There are a few mimosa trees near where I live, I will have to talk to the owners and ask they call me if the ever get limbs off in a storm etc. Watching you deal with the heat I am so glad I decided to put in heat/AC and insulate real well when I converted what was a 20x24 storage shed to a dedicated woodshop. Lungs @ 27% I don't handle heat/ humidity real well :-(

Thank you very much. I did insulate when I walled it in and did have AC but it was in a smaller room in back of the shop. Our temperatures rarely reach that high and it is usually pretty mild around here. But this was a real shocker. I think if I moved faster in the morning and could get everything done before it does get hot. Even small limbs have pretty nice grain and can be made into something. Nice to have bigger pieces though. Thanks for watching, Gary

@@ThePapa1947 You're luck, the summers here in MO are way too hot (my only complaint) Not as bad this year but I have seen 1 month + of triple digit heat :-( when it is that bad I don't even risk the 100 ft walk out to my shop :-( But on the flip side winters here are generally 90 days and done :-) VS where I grew up in Vermont. As my grandfather coined: "Vermont don't get a summer, just 3 months of damned poor sledding!"

Looks like you are making good use of that log of mimosa wood sent to you. The mimosa has some very distinct and dark rings that make it stand out quite well. Yup, this was quick wood turning. However, doing the end grain turning like the last bowl was challenging due to the hardness. But side turning was much quicker from the same piece of wood. Thanks for sharing, Gary! I like it!! 👍👍👍👍👍

@@ThePapa1947 we had a storms to come up out of nowhere to couple weeks ago crazy amount of rain fell in a very short amount of time, was just after church one evening, my mom sent me a video of our road when they came in they had went out to eat and came in just a little later than i did they live just a hop skip and a jump down from my house, but anyway I put what she had sent me at the end of a video, just some very small streams turned into a river down the road, one night maybe a week ago was some really bad lightning one thunder boom woke me up out of a dead sleep sounded like a bomb exploded shook everything amazing the power of lightning, I like to watch it until it starts popping around to close 😅 😵‍💫
