Just leaving this for the folks who were also interested in Brodie's method of using "same or different" when flipping a disc vs. heads/tails. TL;DR - it does improve the fairness of the game, but doesn't make it 50/50. With this method, "same" will always be favored over "different". For example, let's assume the probability of getting tails is 60%, and heads is 40%. P(same) = P(both heads) + P(both tails) = (0.4 * 0.4) + (0.6 * 0.6) = 52% P(different) = P(heads/tails) + P(tails/heads) = (0.4 * 0.6) + (0.6 * 0.4) = 48%

As soon as he said that I sat down and started doing the math, but im not good at math so I didn't get far. Thank you for doing this so I didn't have to.
@BrodieSmith2 жыл бұрын
Yea 50/50 just an easy way of saying it. But this math is awesome!
@markstanbrook55782 жыл бұрын
The easy way to approach maths problems is to use an extreme example. Say its 99% heads then clearly 'Same' wins almost every time. Either way though Brodie is right that same/different is always fairer than heads/tails for any disc (except a perfect disk where it's the same).
@brittjuergens26602 жыл бұрын
So you’re using 60/40 as an example here but do we know what the probability really is when flipping a disc? And I’m assuming it’s because of the shape and “top heaviness” of a disc versus a coin? Is a coin flip actually 50/50?
@oldkingscala2 жыл бұрын

@gnarwhalnoah2 жыл бұрын
A note on flipping disc in ultimate: same or different is actually more unfair if the discs tend to land on one side more than the other, because you can call same every time and the discs will tend to both land the same way. It's not a huge advantage, probably 60/40 or 55/45, but you know for sure that same is more likely without having to do any tests, simply because the discs are the same so they will tend to be biased the same way. In comparison, while throwing one disc is certainly biased, it is much harder to tell which way it will be biased without testing it. If you want to go flip a hundred discs to figure it out so you can sceme the flip then by all means go for it, but wind and other factors can also influence the flip on the game day, making that a much more time consuming and less profitable endeavor than simply calling same every time and knowing you have a slight edge
@Postermaestro2 жыл бұрын
Actually calling "same or opposite" doesn't completely solve the problem with flipping the discs. It will always be more likely that "same" is the right call, unless there is equal chance of landing on either side. But then there wouldn't be a problem to begin with. But it does make it closer to 50/50, than just calling a side.
@downhilldummy80912 жыл бұрын
I was looking through the comments to make sure someone said something. I don’t think these guys are the smartest…. Even their “training” is structured like playing. Does anyone in this sport even go to the “range” and just drill the same disc for hours?? Some day, someone in this sport will take it VERY SERIOUSLY, and destroy these guys!
@Postermaestro2 жыл бұрын
@@downhilldummy8091 I think it's fair to say these guys have spent a fair amount of time drilling in the field. Doesn't produce the best content though, and they are also preparing for this specific course that they'll be playing this weekend I think.
@downhilldummy80912 жыл бұрын
@@Postermaestro Perhaps that’s true, though I have my doubts based on the amount of shanked throws that are made during competitions. I imagine the equivalent in traditional golf would be amateurs on tour shanking shots. I’m not trying to discredit the talent or time spent in the field, that would be unfair. I just believe there’s a lot of opportunity for improvement in such a young sport.
