I was watching a video by a manufacturing expert, and his point was that design overshadows everything else when it comes to cost... by a LOT. One of the benefits of being a smaller company like you guys is that you can make design decisions that ease the complexity of manufacturing, saving you both time and money. Thanks for sharing your insight into the process! I threw your prototype midrange a few times today; I like it a lot.

love this kind of insight into the technicalities. these plastic discs that we so often flippantly bomb at trees are actually so complicated and well thought out, building on decades of experience in manufacturing. super cool, would definitely enjoy more like this

I've been doing all the math and looking up prices of parts to design an injection molding machine and there are so many hurdles that I never even imagined. The greatest problem I see at the moment is psi overload. More psi means more high-pressure equipment which means more expensive equipment which means I need to save a bit longer... You have no idea how grateful I am that manufacturers like you and MVP are bringing us along your process for this. It is so exciting!

For major flashing (like in your thumbnail) you can also adjust back pressure or screw speed to help, although like you said TPU will inevitably do it (polypropylene and LDPE/LLDPE/HDPE also have a habit of doing this), but that can help it happen *slightly* less!
@caseysmith5448 сағат бұрын
This explains why prior to 2005 when brands started making discs with the Champion/Z type plastics were more common they were not as bad on the flashing and if it disc did have flashing the issue of minor flashing was often gone after the start of the next round with only a few exceptions like in Pro/X type of plastics.
@dannydiscgolfs965 сағат бұрын
Not necessarily. Lowering back pressure might alleviate some of the flashing if that’s the true cause. Could also be clamp pressure, injection hold time, injection pressure. Could be flash stuck in the ejectors(if it uses them)

The brands like Innova or Prodigy do not do the thing Discraft does in their videos for lower flashing prevention first shown about the time Paul McBeth went to Discraft and this is why Innova can have when molds need to be either retooled or redone from a 3D cad program is that Innova discs especially in the midrange on up that have more of the Concave and Convex rims can have more lower flashing the brand refuses to remove from the bottom.

The only bigger brand that does not have flashing is the 3D Printed Disc golf discs from NSH disc brand as even the now expensive remakes of the limited production Vibram discs will have some flashing from the way the oil based rubber is vacuumed into the mold. There might be a few other brands that make 3D printed discs but in so small of numbers basically the minimum numbers per model to get approved and keep making said minimum numbers they are not really even a brand.

Whatever Discraft does I’m gonna have to say they are THE BEST at handling flashing. MVP is amazing, one of my favorite and most bagged brand, but even if that took they been annoying me with some flashing issues lately Also, idk what happened but the parting line flashing on my Canyon is kinda horrendous but the disc is super fun

You are getting a lot of flashing because you are using a 220 ton machines on a 8-9" disc with most of its surface area parallel to pull, you would need a minimum of a 250 ton machine by standard injection mold calculations. Not knowing optimal machine setting and poor mold design can contribute also. Stating that you are just going to get flashing on a part like that is not correct. Running a hot runner system with outer injection as you competition is using would cure a lot of issues also. (20+ year Injection Mold Engineer/ Tool and Die machinist)
