I took classes in precision machining technology, and then picked up disc golf. As far as I’m concerned this is the future, whether learning how to run the machines or program the code. As long as you learn the code and the basics, you’ll always have a job. My degree is welding technology, but I’d rather have learned stuff like this. 👍

@@iamdisappointedinyou3097 ironically, I get this feeling playing a mod in minecraft called GregTech. it's stupid realistic and all about automation and ridiculous chemicals and production lines. automating polybenzimidazole (PBI) and explaining it to anyone that would listen was near-euphoric. I played a modpack called Nomifactory (Monifactory is the new modern update) that's just focused on the automation and progression and I had to have spent over 50 hours in that world before I burnt out because I didn't automate everything enough. This article called "Minecraft Is Not What You Think, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Polybenzimidazole" is a really good intro if you're curious what it's like. The pics he shows off are just ludicrous. I'd link it, but I think youtube deleted my comment when I tried adding one. My polybenzimidazole automation setup was large enough to take two floors of one of those 16x16 block skyscrapers, and it's _miniscule_ compared to the shown endgame of this modpack Obviously, I don't mean to take anything away from actual production engineers and people doing this stuff IRL. I'm just a dingus playing minecraft at the end of the day, and they're professionals innovating their field and pushing the limits. I just find it so awesome that an average person can get a feeling of how immensely satisfying it is to make stuff like this. I will warn you, though, if anyone reading this decides to try Monifactory, it's not for the faint of heart. Whenever you need something, make it in BULK. It will save you several hours of headaches. (or just look up vids of it on youtube for smart people going nuts with it. look up Nomifactory though, since Monifactory is so new it doesn't really have any content out yet)

The "wings" of the disc very clearly have the most affect on how they fly but what's more interesting is that just simply changing from one plastic blend to another can make a disc that normally fades hard and to the left into a disc that turns over the right

I was absolutely baffeled by how fast this sport took over here in Estonia. Within 5 years we went from just a few Disk Golf courses to pretty much having full courses in even some of the most rural areas of the country. It literally helped bring life back into areas that people never went before. I stopped playing myself because of a shoulder injury but I loved the simplicity of it and the fact that this could be picked up by almost anyone.

Oh my goodness, Destin.....You have no idea how much you just made my day. I am 46 years old and my friends and I have been playing Disc Golf since 1997. Disc golf is such an amazing sport. Just like its ball counterpart, disc golf is so much more than just a sport...it's a social event since most if the time you are not actually throwing your disc but rather walking between your throws which leaves a lot of time for conversation. My friends and I are all subscribers and I think you will find that a majority of disc golfers are fans of engineering, science all things tech. That is why I think you will get a lot of views. There have been videos on KZbin where DG manufacturers have discussed the manufacturing process of discs but nothing this in-depth. I never would have imagined that DG would be the sport it is today. Back in the 90's early 00's, DG was not nearly as popular as it is now. Now, DC has exploded in popularity and you have done your part in helping expose more people to this great sport. Bravo.

​@@williamstrachan there was a company that called latitude 64 that experimented with dimples on a disc called misslen back in the 2010 area. Was the "fastest" disc produced of it time based on in-house describe flight numbers. Which is a whole other conversation and it isn't really based in facts. Anyways, from my personal experience, that was also echoed by the pros, there was no noticeable difference.

​@@williamstrachan Dimples have been tried before, but they've never seemed to work all that well. The disc has a cross sectional shape similar to an airplane wing, where a smooth surface is usually best. Disc designers use very subtle differences in the shape to make discs that turn more sharply or glide farther. While the most important factor in how a disc flies is the skill of the person throwing it, a large part of the fun of the sport is learning how differently molded discs will fly in different situations. It's a very interesting and fun sport!

This is hilarious but I also have to sigh at the memory of a recent new MVP disc I tossed in the bin because the flashing made it too uncomfortable to even grip tightly (and I did a crappy job trying to remove it). Basically, I purchased 3 Trails from 3 different vendors. The one that arrived from Infinite Discs was so bad that I think it somehow bypassed a trimmer machine. The Trails from the other vendors were absolutely perfect. I’m completely flummoxed how that one disc had such crazy excess and very sharp flashing. I’m 53 years old and started playing disc golf in high school with a regular frisbee. I’ve purchased probably over 1,500 or maybe even over 2k discs in my lifetime. I keep a spreadsheet of all currently owned discs (130+ at the moment) broken down into types, flight numbers, and weights. I only mention this to let you know that, yes, I do have lots of experience owning and understanding the feel of different discs, including those that are clearly better manufactured (hello you beautiful Latitude 64 Royal manufacturing process with your exquisite Grand plastic). Anyway, I own lots of MVP discs, love them, and that single Trail was the one and only example of really any significant flashing on one of their discs. Something weird happened with that particular run and it was not good…

I work for one of MVP's suppliers on master-batch colorant. Never thought I'd see something that we make on this channel. The glow in the dark pigments are a pain to work with for our process, but obviously they're worth it for the end product. As for what we call LDR (let-down ratio) - most places will use about 4% colorant to 96% resin or what we call 25:1. We're a very tiny part of the overall process, but obviously very important for customer satisfaction in the appearance of their discs.

There's something about the "impossible comeback moment" in any competition that I think connects with people on such a deep level that you don't even need to be personally invested in the sport to appreciate it. I saw that clip randomly on Reddit just after it happened. I used to play Frolf when I was younger, so Discgolf has always been at the back of my mind, for decades, but that clip really planted the seed for me to actually get into the sport, which I decided to do this year.

I was much closer to his shot than he was when it went in. I skipped watching hole #17 to get right next to the green for hole #18. The atmosphere was incredible. About halfway through, everyone saw that it was on the correct line, and then when it stuck, the place exploded!

Destin, great video and thanks. One thing that I think needs to be explained is why discs get more "understable" over time. I think the surface roughness increases as the disc gets beat in, which changes where the flow separates...laminar to turbulent, your fave! This obviously would change the lift's torque and thus the gyroscopic precession.

You and me, buddy. In the 70s/80s, playing when it was a new activity (just maybe becoming a sport), picking out a notable tree in the distance and using our one and only disc to play. Then, that day of insight when it's realized that Frisbee makes different discs for stability and long throws and you bought your first 'driver', but not yet ready to call it that. Total imaginative fun.

I am an automation engineer and seeing the universal language of manufacturing is so awesome so see! I have a unique pleasure of having a job now that lets me help my customers make anything from salsa and sausage, to cars, Lubricants and water treatment. The parts that truly made me feel so seen though are the flicker on the end of the robot and the “wiggle” to make the disk settle! I love my job in manufacturing and automation so much and this whole series has really made me feel more pride and joy in knowing that smarter folks than me enjoy the process as much as I do!

I love disc golf and SmarterEveryDay. This was an awesome collaboration, I love that they showed all of the really cool and clever pieces that they have in place to solve issues in their process. The wiggle on the robot arm, magnets to catch metal shavings, and all of the other pieces that Brad and Chad shared. They seemed very connected to the entire process which was neat to see. That whole process in that one cage is gorgeous. Picks up the centre with the little suction cups, pokes any inadvertent extra discs back into the stack, locates the centre onto the other part of the head, then catches the overmoulded disc with the little suction cups, fits the new centre into the mould, then puts the overmoulded disc on the belt... rinse and repeat, all on one arm. It's so clean!

Every time you visit a manufacturing facility, I feel like every person you talk to is violating an NDA that they signed and giving away proprietary business knowledge. At the same time I do notice the digitally concealed text where they didn't want a particular detail being released, so someone Okayed everything. You just seem to have a way of asking a simple straightforward technical question to people who do this everyday that invites them to geek out over it with you, and the rest of the world just happens to also get to see it. Something I notice you do and try to replicate more.
