Lithium e-bike batteries like to have a resting voltage at 50% capacity to help prolong the life of the cells. Here is a cheap idea on how you can discharge the pack to a set voltage. You can find the part on amazon or on the web. Everything listed below was about $30.00 This was made for my Lectric XP bikes.
This project was made for a 48v battery pack

Thanks. Why not just use at 60+ watt incandescent? Only need 1 lamp holder. Will use your design to make a smart charger as well utilizing stock charger. Thinking another 30 bucks max. If there is interest I will post the schematic

I use an electric dryer with several speeds. For a 1675 W dryer (about 15 amp at 120V), high draws about 6 amps for 52V ebike battery, medium about 3 amps and low about 1.5 amps. This way you can adjust the speed with which you drain the battery. Same set as here, but use a simple wall plug instead of light sockets and bulbs

Rick, thanks for great video. I think I watched it 6 times just trying to get the display on the regulator to light up. I had the company send me a second regulator and same results. No Display no light bulbs lit. I can measure with a meter, the voltage on the small screws you tighten to lock in the wire. Yes polarity is correct and the input wires are on the input. Help???

I've left my ebike battery charged for to 90% for about 4 months. Now I'm disccharging it for storage, because I know better. Anyone know how much damage to the cells occured when storing it at a high charge?

You definitely can use 120v incandescent bulbs to speed up the discharge process. Your battery pack can handle 10A discharge current easily. One 100w bulb yields less than 1A current. Last time when I discharged my 24V battery pack to test the battery capacity, I connected two electric space heaters, 1500w each, in parallel to get roughly 5A. Since your battery is 48V, so you only need one heater to get to 5A. You can also switch between 900w (medium) and 600w (low) selections on the heater to reduce the current. All these incandescent bulbs and space heaters are just high power resistors which can dissipate energy into heat.

I left my battery in my XP step-over eBike too long (4 months) without recharging and it now reads 29 volts. My std lectric charger no longer detects the battery (led always green) and the battery does not have enough voltage to power the control display. Is there a different charger or another device/process that might make my battery useful again? Lectric support advised me to order a new replacement battery for $299 and recycle the old one. 😢

When I built battery packs and came across 18650 cells that would not charge I would zap them with a fully charged battery for 5 secs. To do that its just pos to pos and neg to neg for a few secs. After that the battery would show enough voltage for the charger to kick in. Not saying this would work and its risky in some ways. But I would take a 48v dc source like 4 12v batteries and zap the pack at the charging port. If you get the voltage up enough the charger will kick in. To be safe have a face shield on and do it outside.

That's called bump charging. It's not the best way to do it. The best way is to use a variable DC bench power supply to get it over 40V, using a low current setting, then the charger will work.

Great video. My bike has a USB connection...do you think I could use your set up by just hooking into the USB?

I bet you could but it would take much longer. The usb port only puts out 5v as where the light will draw what ever it can

You need to measure with a multimeter what the battery voltage is at. If it's too low, then you will need to use a power supply to bring it back up to a voltage that your charger will except. Either that, or there is something wrong the the BMS or charger.

the inbuilt BMS of a bike battery should protect against over-discharging. so if you're watching your pennies you dont't need the controller, just the load will do. and your charger should protect against overcharging. Cheers all

Yes. But to store the battery and keep the cells from chemical breakdown, a 50% charge will keep the cells healthy and help them last longer.

I've found multiple brands of BMS boards to be far too unreliable to blindly rely on them to protect lithium-ion battery packs from over-discharge. They don't all work properly/as expected. I believe this is in large part due to the rampant counterfeiting and low-quality of parts often sold on the internet. Even manufacturers sometimes get shipments of counterfeit or "recycled" components and they end up in their products until the problem is identified...usually by their customers.

My 48V ebike battery has a USB charging port that I could use to drain the battery, but I don't know if there is a buck circuit inside the battery case to reduce the voltage from 48V to 5V. It's possible that the USB port is connected to only several cells in which case the battery would become horribly unbalanced and most cell would stay at 100% charge. Not good.
@Ricks_Tech_Talk

I'm sure they use a step-down to reduce the voltage to 5v. If they used just a few cells for the USB, that would not be smart at all.

No, it would not be smart, but we're talking about something that comes from China.

why bother going through all that when all you have to do is under charge your battery.for instance if my battery is low i charge it for 5 hours not 6,if its half i charge it for 3 hours if its at 70pct i charge it for 90 mins thats the way i protect my battery while using it.i never fully charge my battery unless im going long distance the following day.
@Ricks_Tech_Talk
@Ricks_Tech_Talk 9 ай бұрын
You could, but you will never know for sure what so many mins will give you on a charge, unless you have a voltage meter hooked up to it. With something like this, you plug it in and walk away. Also the main point of this was to discharge it after giving it a full charge, when you couldn't go for a ride. Things happen and plans change. But we can agree a 100% charge is not healthy if it's not used right away.
