In this series we are looking at the story of Baal from the Ras Shamra texts found at Ugarit. Baal is one of the main Canaanite gods whom Israel was tempted to worship in the Hebrew Bible alongside their pagan neighbors. The more we know about the Baal myth, the more we recognize when the Biblical authors use imagery associated with it and what Scripture proclaims about the TRUE “rider on the clouds”, YHWH!

1 kings 18: 27 At noon Elijah began to make fun of them. “Pray louder!” he said. “If Baal really is a god, maybe he is thinking, or busy, or traveling! Maybe he is sleeping so you will have to wake him!” 28 The prophets prayed louder, cutting themselves with swords and spears until their blood flowed, which was the way they worshiped. 29 The afternoon passed, and the prophets continued to act like this until it was time for the evening sacrifice. But no voice was heard; Baal did not answer, and no one paid attention....

This is one of the best stories of the Hebrew Scriptures. Rarely is boastimg encouraged. Yet Elijah was so confident Baal did not exist that he taunted the prophets of Baal before Elijah called fire down from the Nooshere: The First Heaven. ❤

I grew up a Christian and always thought it was silly to worship something you made yourself out of wood or stone. Just like Jeremiah 10:3-5. But then I learned that very real demons (fallen angels) were being represented by those images, and they were playing false gods. Now I can understand why the pull and enticement into idolatry over and over for Israel was so strong. These demons granted favors in exchange for worship, just like they do today. “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:12

True. Many people think these "gods" didn't exist, that there weren't real spirit beings being worshipped by these ancient people. The ancients weren't stupid. They wouldn't have wasted their time with imaginary beings if they knew they didn't actually exist or didn't get anything out of it. The fact is, these beings do exist, and things were quite different back then from today. The fallen spirits made themselves known to mankind much more openly and frequently back then than they do today. Everything changed with the Resurrection of Christ. Death was defeated and the demons were bound. The Lord said He saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. This was in the context of Him giving His disciples power over the spirits. We now live in a world where the demons are by and large bound and unable to work exactly as they once did in ancient times before the Resurrection. The Lord does allow some demonic workings to occur, but it is nowhere to the extent that it was back in the OT.

When Moses presented himself to Farao, their magicians replicated almost every miracle that Moses showed to them. Moses, by the power giving to him by God, transform his staff into a snake and the Farao's magicians did the same (one example). There were fantastic and supernatural things going on back there from both sides. This is why I agreed with your comment. People nowadays think that the ancient kings from Israel were just stupid in abandon Got (I mean, they were) but it was not for nothing. Sorry my english, I'm new to this english writing thing.

What I find fascinating is that Ugarit was unknown to archaeology until the 1970’s when the city state was discovered. Before then it was just a legendary place mentioned in the Bible. So if Ugarit maintained the Baal mythology, the same Baal that the Phoenicians introduced to North African Carthage and the Sabaeans of Yemen.

Ba’al is a complex word. It means husband, lord, and an academically uncertain god. Carthage primarily worshipped Ba’al Hammon. Lord Hammon. Hannibal worshiped Ba’al Melqart, Lord Melquart, a less popular, but very powerful god. There’s a lot of debate about if there ever was a “Ba’al” deity. In the Hebrew, most mentions of Ba’al are tied to a city with a known deity, or it says “the Ba’als”, as in a pantheon.

I really don't see the supposed parallels to the Bible. I have read again and again that "scholars" believe all these gods existed in Canaan and eventually YHWH became the main God. I notice there is no YHWH in this story, suggesting that YHWH really did come through Moses to replace the others as the Bible describes.

People will often quote the King James Bible Matthew 6:24, "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and Mammon." But they read this as if there were only once Prince of Hell. Mammon is certainly a Prince of Hell in the sense of accursed finances. But there are actually 7 Princes of Hell - Lucifer, Leviathan, Azazel, Asmodeus, Belphegor, Mammon, Beelzebub, ...each representing one of the Seven Deadly Sins. Lucifer somehow became Satan by various means depending on who you talk to. Some Hebrews say Lucifer volunteered to willingly become Satan at God's request. Other Christians say Lucifer rebelled against God, indirectly fulfilling God's Will by rebelling against God's Will. Lucifer/Pride 3:31 - Beauty Profiteering Mammon/Greed 4:33 - Money Profiteering Asmodeus/Lust 5:32 - Sex Profiteering Leviathan/Envy 7:08 - Narcissistic Profiteering Beelzebub/Gluttony 8:25 - Obesity Profiteering Satan/Wrath 9:40 - War Profiteering Belphegor/Sloth 10:59 - Lazy Profiteering I suppose this is the perfect moment to remind us of George Carlin’s 1972 "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television" monologue. [1] The words, in the order Carlin listed them, are: "shit", "piss", "fuck", "cunt", "cocksucker", "motherfucker", and "tits". Italians call it 'sacramentale'. Yet Nietzsche’s lack of faith may have resulted in no support when he brilliantly pulled away the illusions of all philosophy. Unlike Nietzsche, I would be led by the Spirit to say it is time to, “Let our souls magnify the Lord” -- and realize there are no borders, especially when we blow the Holy Ghost into the sails of another's soul, much like the Virgin Mother of God.

Stop lying!!!! The almighty God did not require child sacrifice and he despised it. It’s written all over the Old Testament how it angered him. One time, he asked Abraham I believe to sacrifice his son to see if he was willing to and Abraham was prepared but God stopped him and spared his son and provided him with a goat in his sons place. It was to see how willing he was to be obedient to God and put his trust in him and Abraham put God first.

Or... authors of the time imposed their local culture onto their speculations about the cosmos. Why would an omnipresent, omnipotent entity need to rely on messengers/angels? Like in Genesis 20:21, God has only heard second-hand about what's going on in Sodom and Gomorrah, so he needs to go down to Earth himself to learn the truth. The authors are writing about a king in the sky, literally, based on their own cultural assumptions.

A sacrificial tower was built under Nimrod's leadership. The effort was to get back in touch with those fallen spirit powers that had previously interfered with the human race and led humanity to the situation where God decreed the flood. At the Tower of Babel, God not only scattered the languages, but abandoned the nations to these fallen gods; He chose Abram as a "fighting instrument" for himself in the second batch, which the Old Testament tells about; The people of Israel and Jerusalem. We live in the "time-out" of this cosmic battle now, when the Gentiles have the opportunity to seize the salvation offered by God, before we enter the last seven years, when more than half of those living here will perish. Baal is just one manifestation of this demon-worshiping choice of humanity.

@@sootuckchoong7077Not true. The worship of Yahweh was first. The Bible is full of God trying to keep the Jews from following false gods. Especially in the book of 1 Kings. Yes Israel did fall into polytheism eventually but they knew who the true God was.

How would any two people from different nations understand each other in ancient times? One or the other had learned the language of the other. Much later in the OT, the Assyrians come to siege Jerusalem and taunt the Israelites in their own language. The leaders of Jerusalem ask the Assyrian to speak in his own language instead of Hebrew because they could understand that language. He refused because by speaking Hebrew, he wanted to cause fear in the people of the city. Abraham, a man of Ur of the Chaldeans, moves to Canaan and speaks to the locals. He knew their language or they knew his or both. I don't think David or Goliath knowing the language of the other is a problem when their nations obviously interacted with each other even if usually through war.

Each nation had their own TONGUE (what we call 'language'). At the Tower of Babel they were all 'speaking the same language', which means they were all of one mind, goal, thought process. God destroyed the Tower, the goal they were all submitted to, and scattered their minds to go in different directions, have differing goals. Go read the whole passage and look up the words.

It amazes me how much of scholarship wants to try and separate these very ancient eastern and Hebrew contextual points. Seeing the snake is a divine rebel and his actions as divine rebellion would just make sense to the author and audience of scripture.🔔

Isn't much simpler to say that the ancient Hebrews were Canaanites and YHWH was a more southern god ( child of El) and Ba'al was a northern brother? The northern tribes of Israel are the ones in constant contact/conflict with the Baalists. The southern tribes Judah and Benjamin stay more loyal to YHWH. It also helps that the Assyrians came from the north, so the northern tribes took the brunt of their assault. This seems parsimonious to me.

(and they could've had a mix between the Canaanite tradition and the Egyptian traditions when they moved into the land of Judah ) But after the northern kingdom fell and you had all the Canaanites in Israel " I mean Israelites" flee south to Judah.. then you see the intermingling of traditions and ultimately Yahweh worship won favor with the elites, as most of the people were still pagans worshipping ba'al and ashera. I find it odd, that you do all this research, you see how the Bible was taken from older texts, but yet, you still think that Yahweh is the God, and he is not. He's just like the other gods, except he has better technology than some and is more ruthless than others. But the true description of The God, especially when you take into consideration what Jesus said, it's obvious that Yahweh is Not The God, but just one of the Elohim and many gods. Maybe you're afraid to take it all that far, but the cruelty of Yahweh, the lack of love and forgiveness, the awful sins he committed against anyone who did not worship him, proves he's not The God. He's also one of the sons of El. I appreciate your work and I hope you dive further into the truth about this. I fully believe that one of the biggest problems we have today and have had in the past, is that people are looking to this god, and standing for the horrible things he did, as a reason to treat others horribly. There's too many researchers and scholars who have seen what I've seen and realized the truth about this subject. Thanks, and blessings

great series, I was a fundamentalist Christian for 40 years willing to die for my beliefs even though I didn't really know what was in the Bible and our family never went to church Then after I started attending church regularly for 3 yearsincluding the old testament.. I realize the stories didn't actually read how I remember learning them that led to lots of questions and questioning the decency of the Old Testament God And that led me too well over 3000 hours into deep scholarly study of the ancient world archaeology and linguistics. And learning about the ancient Sumerians, Akkadians, etc etc. And all their ancient flood and creation myths as well as from Assyria, Babylonia, Ugaretic texts and learning about Zoroastrianism and Greek philosophy etc etc is precisely what led me to become an atheist. from knowing that the book of Daniel and revelations were basically talking about Antioch as the fourth and the Roman Empire etc And how they writers of the Hebrew Bible just adapted their ancient traditions into their own new belief system and attributed with the other gods did to their God just like all the people groups before them did to their previous gods. etc is why I'm certain none of it is true and all the gods were simply created from man's understanding of the world at that time because they didn't really know anything. The point of all that is to say I don't know how you can know all those things and then somehow think this really late God that appeared Yahweh, is the real true god.. that baffles my mind. With all that said I greatly appreciate how you broke down this series I just don't understand how it can make someone a believer

@@kenaterphotography4624 I think your fundamentalism handicapped you, honestly. Seeing Scripture for what it actually is and how it speaks into its own cultural backgrounds while also containing truth that transcends all cultural backgrounds only strengthens my belief that it is not a mere human product. It roots it all within history while also transcending history and transforming lives within every culture into which it has been preached. Meeting and spending time with indigenous Christians around the world attests to the transcendent power of Scripture, rooted as it is within the culture and languages of the ancient Near East and Greco-Roman worlds. But more importantly, Jesus actually rising from the grave is the fulcrum upon which it all hinges. If that didn't actually happen, then it's all nonsense.

The Israelites, Hebrews or Jews were just Canaanites. They were from there and just ended up picking one of the gods as the only one. Quite simple. Those that believe with faith will find the truth hard to accept. Enjoy your life

@@wolfscareglow2425 from what i read and understand, the israelites most likely began as polytheists.. probably during the exile in babylon they learned about zoroastriansm and i believe they then made a switch to monotheism. but there are still traces of polytheism in the bible, the most famous one being psalm 82 "god standeth in the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the gods."

You start out seemingly scholarly and immediately take a religious position on the subject matter you are trying so hard to seem genuine about your research but you have presupposition of the topic being discussed that is the opposite of research it’s starting with a belief and trying to justify it. The reason the Bull is the father of Baal goes back to the Sunerian King's list. Kullasina-Bel who gets remembered as Bel and then Baal is the son of Jushur who was the first king on the Sumerian King's list after the flood. Jushur who wrote the book of Jasher/Jashur was known as the Bull of Heaven.

There is no such god as Ba'al. It's simply a a word meaning lord. It's as if you were talking about the British aristocracy, and you said "Lord did such and such." People would naturally ask "Lord who?" The story is meaningless without that information. Each city-state called their particular god Lord, and many city-states were under the protection of the same god as others - that is to say, each god owned multiple city-states. The Ugarites acknowledged the existence of all the same gods that everyone else in the Middle East knew of. The father-god was El, which is also not a name, but a title meaning "higher." His children were the god called Ba'al in Ugarit (called Bel, Marduk or Ra in other places), Anat, Yahweh, and Yam. Their mother was Ashera. Elijah felt safe in mocking the priests of Ba'al/Marduk because he happened to know from his own god, Yahweh, that Marduk was in exile at that time, and couldn't come to their summons.
@shadow3746
@shadow3746 Ай бұрын
@@itzakpoelzig330 That is correct. Also Baal's name was Hadad/Adad. Although his role is almost functionaly the same as Marduk since he is called Bel, and their stories and abilities are almost exactly alike. Though there are differences depending on the region.
