Discogs: Archiving My Record Collection

So I just started collecting again after selling most of my collection 10 years ago. To find the right issue of a record in discogs I just enter the wax number in the search, and I haven’t had any problems locating the right issue. I don’t have any rare items so maybe that is why, or maybe I’m doing something wrong? Since my collection is small right now I’m just going to go back and check that they are correct. Anyway, thank you for the video…it gave me several ideas to improve my organization and I love the dividers!

I put all of my records onto Discogs during lockdown, with far less in my collection than you have it was a pretty painless process. It was helped by not having masses of records with multitudes of pressings. For example, I have a couple of hundred UK country records, all of which are the only released version of the album. So, that kind of thing made it a doddle for me. I really wouldn't want to be approaching the whole task with a huge collection of very popular artists. The meagre collection of Beatles records I own were a major ball ache. I keep trying to get Louise to understand how important my Discogs account will be for her if anything happens to me, but she thinks I'm just trying to talk to her about records and switches off, or pretends to go to sleep. I might have to delete my account before I pop my clogs, just to piss her off and prove my point! Cheers - Hedley

I usually have to go all the way down to the matrix numbers but you're right, even then sometimes I can't read it or it's one number off and I can't find the exact matrix number variation. So I just pick the closest one.

I have been dreading cataloging my music on discogs. I am retiring and moving to Maine. Long cold winters will be when I start my discogs catalog. 10, 000, lps, 45s, 78s, cassettes, cds. It's not just monetary value but I have forgot exactly what I have.

I agree wth all your observations on the discogs experience. I have about 2500 records, and have just finished cleaning them with my Spincleaner, as well as putting them all as putting them all in outer sleeves and inners. That took me some considerable time, effort and expense as you can imagine. My next project is to catalog them- seems like a daunting task but it has to be done for the reasons you list. I would welcome a simple tutorial on how to navigate the app. Enjoyed the video. Cheers.

I literally could not watch this whole video. I finished putting my entire collection which is close to this size on Discogs and I could feel the vinyl noose tightening around my neck as you began explaining it. It all came back, researching for hours dozens of titles with matrix numbers not in the database, the eyes straining to read the faint barely scratched numbers in the deadwax. Was that a Pickneyville or Gloversville pressing, RL SS one side...both sides, RE1 cut no RE1 AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Hey Mazzy. John here. I started collecting when I was 14 until about my mid twenties. I’m 58 now and started again about two years ago. I am absolutely in love with record collecting. I have 973 albums. All of which are in Discogs. It took me a long time. I can only imagine the amount you have. It must have been and still is daunting. When I reach a thousand albums I will be joining you in the Vinyl community. The Vinyl Crabb will be my channels name. Great job.

I have just under 800 LP's and a baker's dozen 7" in my collection entered on Discogs and while it was a time-consuming task to enter them all, I find it invaluable having access to the phone app when record shopping to make sure I am not buying stuff I already own cos, I'm old and easily confused.... ;)

Thanks for sharing your experience of using Discogs to catalogue your collection. A few years back I decided to create a simple EXCEL Spreadsheet to create a disc library. I have just under 10000 discs of every format. I just couldn't face the gruelling task of getting down into the fine detail of catalogue numbers etc. I just list ARTIST, TITLE, LABEL, YEAR OF RELEASE and FORMAT. It serves my purpose. I was surprised to find that I had several exact same copies of many releases- it proved my "amazing memory" was indeed a creation of my imagination and ego! I can see the benefits of going all in to the nth degree but I don't have the patience! Time spent cataloguing is time taken away from something more enjoyable. At my time of life I want fun not drudgery! I do appreciate many actually do enjoy getting into the nuts and bolts and can become quite obsessed. Each to their own. There is no doubt Discogs is a great (though flawed) resource. Personally I've come a long way from 1972 and a hand written list I started to keep in a school jotter. My 12 year old self would've lost my mind at the thought of Discogs and being able to connect with folks across the continents and buy music from Japan, never mind the prospect of being able to access over 70 million tunes from the worlds biggest jukebox on a hand held phone that also included a camera and access to the entire knowledge that humankind had amassed over millennia. I think I need to go lay day for a while...

I been using Discogs for years as a buyer and seller. I started entering just my US rock collection a few years ago but I got frustrated real fast. I entered about 50 albums, it’s a lot of work. I own about 2000 albums. One day I will start it up again.

Congrats on finishing the big wall! Monumental task for sure. Once you have everything entered it will feel so good. And then it's much easier to manage entering the stuff as its coming in. Hi Mazzy - great video! I have my entire collection in Discogs (vinyl 12" 33s and 45s , 7" 45s and CDs) It took quite a while to do as I have around 4500 items fairly evenly split between vinyl and CDs with about 650 7" 45s. I have found it easiest to add new releases and the hardest by far were the Beatle items due to the large number of items I have and all those variations. I added folders to subdivide the collection when I want to sort and see only the CDs or 7" 45s, etc. Discogs is great to determine what you have when the collection gets large and to know what the market considers of value. Currently my vinyl albums are showing a worth three times the value of my CDs which cost me more initially. It amuses me but like you I have no plans to sell at this time. My biggest pet peeve is my physical collection is sorted in old school alpha order and Discogs uses first name order. Yeah, that just flags me as "OLD".

Hi Mazzy, Thank you for sharing your music knowledge. After watching a couple Discogs KZbin vids I bit the bullet over the weekend and started entering my 600 LPs / CDs / cassettes / music DVDs . 400 in and taking this hobby into uncharted waters of pressings, labels, mono/stereo, country of origin, grading, values, original or reissue etc etc. I find the app reasonably simple and user friendly. Having a pictured list on my phone at record stores will be great. 600 is plenty for a weekend hack like me and is a number that allows a listen to all of them over a year. Discogs is a great motivator to improving my collection quality. Like sourcing a ‘94 Division Bell LP to replace a CD. The hunt is on. Cheers from Robe, South Australia, Mic.

@@mazzysmusic Mazzy, All done! 649 LPs, CDs, cassettes and music DVDs. A bit of detective work at times but ok. Price is a great indicator of trends. What I’ve learnt: Ongoing increase of interest of classic albums, especially first press. Decreasing demand for 2nd tier 70s/80s albums highly regarded in the day. No shift with CDs and music DVDs most being $5 to $10. Cassettes are spiking upwards with some doubling in price in the last 6 months. Why? An awesome app. Cheers, Mic

I've been a Discogs user, seller, and buyer now for almost 5 years. I have about 1850 of my 2500 LPs entered at this point. It's a great tool, for all of the reasons you stated, but also, as you mentioned, it can be buggy as hell. That said, there are some issues they really need to work on and fix. The shipping tool is terrible, so I usually use PayPal shipping, but the international shipping policy was such as CF, that I decided, like many, to restrict my selling to US only. Somebody is getting rich off the seller fees, which are almost as high as eBay, so there is really no excuse for them not fixing the obvious issues. Lastly, being able to sort one's collection by ORIGINAL release date would be very useful. Oh, I have a special pair of +3.5 readers and a small LED flashlight on my desk, just for reading deadwax info.

Norman, you are one of the few online with the knowledge and love of the music you present. Also you describe the art of Archiving nicely: as it should be for any large Record Collection. I think, that any record collection beyond 500 LPs and 400 45rpm is a large collection. I have just illustrated my collection to you in the example, so I am verging on passing that mark. However, what I have now is my fourth record collection, of this size and musical expanse over the span of fifty years. Stay safe and go well.

One has to watch out for the extra-snooty people on Discogs, tho... I started adding my collection there a few weeks ago & added a matrix variation to a Lionel Hampton record on Columbia matching my copy in every way except 3 digits in the dead wax. I literally triple-checked everything about it vs. all the other versions, but a couple other owners kinda' freaked out about my addition despite my having listed three other perfectly-matching identifiers. Now I hafta quadruple-check it as well as not make the eagle-eyed others angry if I do need to defend my input.

Having close to around 1000 LPS I also wanted to catalogue them in DisCogs but the idea of sitting down and spending hours and hours inputting them seemed to daunting and to be honest boring. So what I did starting a couple of years ago was input them as I played them. I am up to around 300 and feeling satisfied the my vinyl collection is being enjoyed and archived at the same time. Consequently my latest additions are the running order, for the most part, of the albums I have played in the last while.Thanks for the channel keep up the great stuff.

Way to go Mazzy. Getting several thousand recs into Discogs is a chore. Some of the classic older recs can take awhile to find the right entry. I did a few at a time over an extended period. However, keeping it up to date is easy. I think I enjoy my collection more now that I can easily look thru it on iPhone/iPad. I haven’t watched the whole video yet but if you haven’t already done so….Don’t forget to regularly back it up from Discogs. You never know.

Whew!!!! That is a TON of work. Probably wore out your glasses!!!!....and the Beatles are WORST to look up for sure in my experience as well lol. Even when I'm working at the shop and pricing things I always leave Beatles albums for Billy to look up and price because I refuse lol! I also use Discog to keep track of how much I spend and find tracking prices another fun aspect of curating my collection. This helps to earmark worthless duds for removal from the collection which is a must when building a better collection in a limited space.

Onya Mazzy! And I thought you would have been all over this stuff...Great to know that others have been through the struggles and frustrations of "Discogging." Once it's all up there, provided you don't have to do a new submission for your unique (oddball) pressing," life is easier as you get new additions- just add them in as you go. As the total tally value increases, my wife is more interested than ever! The real hard thought from this is, what actually will become of our collections??? Unfortunately the next generation are just seeing $$$$$ and not so much appreciation.

I’m a year late to the party on this channel. I’ve been collecting for a couple years; and luckily some other friends told me to use Discogs early on. So I’ve been using it since the beginning. What I DID do this year, though, was put my collection into a Spotify playlist so I can pull it up anytime I’m away from home (which is pretty often). That took about 15-20 hours. It was a ton of work to get started but now every time I buy something, it goes in Discogs and Spotify now. If you have the time and patience, the result’s well worth the effort in my opinion.

I am in the process of putting my collection of about 2700 lp on Discogs. About a month in I am doing the" d's". It is tedious but I am enjoying getting to really know what I have right down to the deadwax. Visiting many albums the have not been off the shelf in decades! Also using this as an opportunity to cull. If it is not in good condition, is not valuable, or I never want to listen to it again it goes.

Discogs is also very important as a registration of artists and personal that worked in music production. I have been spending long time including musicians, songwriters and technical personal of Brazilian albums. Therefore this information becomes available for everyone and could be used in historical research.

One of the hardest parts of entering records into Discogs is when you have to input a new submission of a record that isn’t in the database. It takes a long time to get right, especially because of the Discogs guidelines that are always changing. After about fifty or so new submissions I finally feel like I know what I’m doing. I actually enjoy the process.

Thanks for the video Mazzy. The timing is certainly poignant for me as my insurance company said I needed to send them my collection and determine value. Since so much of my vinyl was purchased decades ago (1960's onward) I had no idea what they are worth. I'm now over 1100 LPs into cataloguing on Discogs and it has turned into a labor of love because with this much music, a couple thousand more to go than have to start the CDs) it is tedious work. Especially difficult is reading the matrix of each side and then often finding that the matrix, because there are so many catalogue numbers that are the same, doesn't match anything I've seen. I wish there was a way to put the matrix in as a line item and up comes the correct LP. Now that would be a great time saving feature! What this cataloging exercise is also forcing me to do is to cover all my LPs, put the vinyl in MOFI sleeves and get rid of the flotsam and jetsam of my collection. Most of the titles being removed will just be donated. How did I end up with Gary Lewis and the Playboys or Leslie Gore? Ah my wife's collection :) Thanks again Mazzy and love your channel. You and 45 RPM are the voices on music and vinyl that I never want to miss.

Hello Mazzy I started to put my collection on Discogs around 8 months ago.I started with my vinyls but after listing 10 of them I was discouraged so I deleted them and decided to start with my cd’s instead.I think it was the best idea I ever had,they are much easier to inscribe than vinyl and it gives me the proper training for when I will go back to the vinyls I hope to find it a little bit easier to do.I only do around 15 to 20 each day so that I don’t get annoyed by the process and when I don’t feel like it we’ll see you tomorrow collection.So far I have 3800 listed and another 3500 to go.After that the real challenge will start so I hope that I will still have the energy to finish the task.Great video as always,keep them coming.

Love this video and I am in the process in fits and starts! The time it takes is huge! I’m trying to clean and replace sleeves as needed as I catalog. Great video! Big job! Incredible, fantastic! I immediately realized that I needed to enter into the database all the new publications that I buy. This makes the job easier! I never dreamed of a large collection like yours. I can’t even imagine how big and hard work it is. It is worthy of respect and admiration. The most difficult thing in this business is when you find the matrix number on your carrier but it is not in the database. It is very tiring - constantly checking all positions. But when you make progress, you get real pleasure.

So glad I started with discogs right from the begining, just over 500 with a good number of boxsets. Just recently reorganised having recently moved house and found a few that hadnt been inputted which is always a bonus. Ended up using the A-Z Artist system Discogs uses although I can see the value in genre based that I had previously, problem with that is artists that move genre or where they directly fit, its never 100% clear. Its like any system, theres always pro's and cons.

Living in Australia I sit back and look in envy at the accessibility and pricing North Americans have for vinyl. But when it comes to putting stuff in discogs I finally get some upside. Most of my older pressings are Australian (or Aus/NZ) and when you look in discogs for options there are only 1 or 2 pressings - so no need to scour the dead wax. I have a few older US pressings and it is a real pain to log them properly with the high number of options. I have spent a fair bit of time to get about 75% of my collection into Discogs (about 1500) and fully understand the size of your undertaking. The good news is once you have it done, it is not hard logging in new acquisitions as you add them.

oh forgot to mention that while I'm cataloging in Discogs at the same time I'm scribbling on little white stickers the same basic info provided and sticking that on the top of the back of the outer plastic sleeve. I like seeing that info later on down the line when I pull the record out.

I retired last year and entering my collection was a first retirement project along with giving it good cleaning. Totally agree with you about the satisfaction it gave me as a fellow Virgo. I have a computer background which made it a bit easier but the few Beatles albums I have were NUTS, so many variations even for the Canadian releases! You are correct, the only time we looked at the dead wax was when Joe Walsh put out a record for his little message scrawled in it. Earliest scrawl I remember was on let it be, Phil loves Ronnie. I’d love a video of actually start to finish adding a record to Discogs. Tools you used to identify the pressing, etc. I’ve toyed with putting my collection on there, but years a go I converted my list from a word file to excel. I even bought a pocket pc to carry with me on record hunting trips, years before the iPhone. This video is encouraging to give it a go. Thank you.

Discogs is fun to use - I just passed the 5700 mark logging these (CDs are so much easier with barcoding). I really wished they would allow a filter on albums in your collection when looking at the artist page but a great source of information overall.

Great vid, Massy. I entered my collection a number of years ago when it was much smaller but it was still a bit of a task but at least it's meant that I've been able to add them as I've acquired them ever since. Some records from the 'heyday' era have a mind-bending number of variations and quite frequently I can't find the exact entry for what I've just picked up so have to add a variation. It can sometimes take a while just to correctly add a single record! As you say, contemporary releases are way easier because there's often only one or two variants since the number of records being pressed these days is small beer compared to the 60s - 80s.

I'll never been able to do this with my vinyl and CD collection having so many. I'll never use DIscogs for that. The only thing I could do might be go to the shelves and write the artist's name abreviated on a notebook, for example Black Sa 12 if i have 12 albums by Black Sabbath. I know what Black Sa means and I kinda know which records by Black Sa I have by memory. I already have the records sorted by genre and subgenre so I might do it. That's what your video inspired me to do. I will also write the genre name like shoegaze, funk or whatever before doing each list and at least I'll have a LP and CD list by genre on a piece of paper. Then Ill have to go to the computer, copy the list so I could be able to add new records or CD's each time I buy one.

Hey Norman. There is a simple discogs answer to the Beatles well works for me just have one copy of each one simple. It's nice you have your genres to your liking if it works for you. Can go with moods too. Whatever you like. Nearly halfway then. I like discogs it's just when a photo disappears it's annoying. Yeah satisfying but a bit wonky you summed it up well there 😃

Congrats, and good luck on your next 2000+ :) Discogs is a can of worms, but so useful. I started 5 years ago and am about 80% done with 8200 titles added. It's been a chore, especially for vinyl and popular titles on CD with all the individual variants, but it's so rewarding when it's finally done. I don't really like the phone/tablet version. I can work with the regular web/PC version a lot quicker.

I made a spreadsheet on my vinyl collection a little over two years ago. I had all my albums in there, what I paid for them, if it’s a gatefold, what the groove markings are, where it was pressed, etc. But I started to get too many albums, and I couldn’t keep up. I stopped for awhile, then stopped buying albums and just focused on entering all my albums in the spreadsheet, then the buying started again…. I have a discogs account for buying albums, but I don’t have any of my albums in there. Looks cool though. I use discogs when entering my albums into my spreadsheet, I should also add them into discogs. 7:30 There's a fabulous camp performance artist called David Hoyle, and some 20 years ago he had a month-long installation in a theater complex that housed his sitting room: his old battered armchairs, his lampstand, his table, his hi-fi, all installed from his home sitting room into this domestic installation space. David would sit there all day from late norning into the evening, sometimes reading, sometimes painting the walls, sometimes playing music, interacting with visitors, all broadcast live on the Internet every day and sometimes live chat. I think he played Rocket Man a cpl of times. Penny Arcade over in England from New York had a few days of shows in the theater, and she would always stop by and lounge with David in the installation each evening because, she said, it was an oasis that chilled her out, where nothing was expected and nothing was happening except Living Space. And she sure was mellow to talk to in that space. When I showed up one day David had us both sat in armchairs reading OK and HELLO magazines ignoring the Web camera that watched us reading gossip for an hour. What's this to do with discogs? Nothing, but there is room for a youtube broadcast where nothing goes on but the chore of filing silently for discogs for an hour, just like you actually do do. Why? I still can't answer that one about David's installation after 20 years, except it was existential genius.

I began to put my collection in to discogs. My collection one tenth of yours. I felt the same as you, I had to do a cube at a time. But other things in my life got in the way. Six grandkids and coaching little league. Maybe this winter I’ll resume my quest. As always enjoyed the video.

Let’s get organized.. organized.. wow that’s a lot of inputting.I’ve been selling on Discogs for a few years. Trying to figure out which of the pressings that I have by trying to decipher the dead wax scrolls is always an adventure. Listing something that has never been addressed is can adventure as well and judged by highest scholars. Accuracy and minutia to its limits.

Until today I refused to dig into Discogs archiving. Fortunately I listed all my CDs and LPs from a very early stage on dbase, later coverted into Access. And since I have ripped all of my CDs, I have got direct access to the directories on my server. As I also have the problem not to know if I have got a particular record on vinyl while I am shopping, I have an excel copy of all my records on my tablet and smartphone. That does it, at least as long as I update the list before I go out shopping. In case I might ever leave this world, I am certain that my two sons, who are both very much into music, will take care of my treasures.

It really becomes easy when it's just part of the record buying process. Entering the data when you bring records home avoids turning into a big project. Good luck on the rest of the cataloging, it'll feel great when it's done!

Thanks for this, Mazzy - really interesting to hear about your journey into the world of Discogs. I totally agree re: the jankiness of the iOS app. I tend to stick to web based app via Safari, even on my iPad Pro, as it offers a far more stable and feature rich experience.

Ouff. Quite the undertaking. I started using discogs early on. Before the size of the collection grew too big. I can only imagine the process for you. I don’t have a lot of rock but man. What a pain in the ass they are. I don’t even bother with some. Toooooooo many pressings. Jazz is easy. I try to add records in as I get them but I am always finding stuff that I forgot to add in. Good video, and I finally have my collection in Discogs this past year, but nowhere near the amount of records you had to deal with. I thought I was going to go blind searching the dead wax. I finally started using a magnifying glass which helped, but still frustrating, depending on the lighting. I’m sure most who watch your channel know about discogs and cataloguing their collection, but if not, discussing the dead wax stamped or hand written numbers is a great topic to expand on.

hey Mazzy, im discogsing my collection these days and i actually kinda enjoy it but I have to be in the right mood. Friday evenings staying in with a few drinks and a smoke works well! It's a ball ache, no doubt about it. Logged mine over a year period I think....about 8000 items. Although still not done my few hundred 45s or CD boxsets. I found 60s UK Decca's, specifically Stones to be incredibly annoying. Who knew they pressed multiple multiple label variants of those early Stones lps. Another odd one was the Moody Blues and their 60s UK Deram releases. I was losing the will to live looking for my copies with dozens of label variants all pressed within a year or two. Keep at it Mazzy, you'll get there.

@@jackwezesa1081 Hi Jack. I would imagine the UK pressings will be better audio (I'm in the UK so they're the only pressings I own). All I meant was there are so many UK Deram pressings listed on discogs for each lp that it was a pain to identify which one was my copy.

As a fellow Virgo I am exactly the same when it comes to finishing a task, to the point where I have been late for appointments because of my need to conclude a job. I have been doing 5 a night I only have 2,481 out of my 4,500+ records . Its fun but, it's also hard & a lot of work at the same time. Hell there are over 1,000 different versions of dark side of the moon as well as sgt pepper's up there some time it's like looking for a needle in a hay stack.

Mazzy, I do hope do you can put all of your analogue and CD pressings on Discogs. I've started to put my catalogue about 5 years ago and now it's up to date :) I still have fun adding new records to my collection and seeing the price shifting during time... I'd consider doing this, but my collection is not so static. Things come and go, better pressings replace old ones, etc. I'd be curating my Discogs as well as my collection! Still, it is the smart thing to do I guess.

Massy, I have the same record cabinets, they're from Ikea, right? I don't think they have them any longer, and that stinks because I need more. As for achieving my collection, I have a tough time with that, as I have a whole section that is Classical music, from Medieval to Shostakovich. It's fun to do, but I get so sidetracked because I see an album I haven't listened to for awhile and that's the end of archiving my collection.

Your collection is on a legendary level. It's practically a history of all the rock and pop of the 20th century, and that's not counting classical, jazz, etc. I don't think it should ever be broken up as it's such an accomplishment in itself. If it's ever sold I would hope for a single buyer like the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame or even the Smithsonian - seriously. I agree about keeping categories simple so you don't have to decide what sub genre an album best fits.
