There are tradeoffs. Yes, greed can motivate unethical and exploitative policies, but they can also be the catalyst for customer service, quality assurance and innovation. The same thing that causes price gouging can motivate financially beneficial policies that benefit both businesses and customers. It’s not a perfect world.

it's simple market based economics. People don't have to pay over the odds for records. The buyers ultimately determine the prices. When I sell a record on there, I list it as the cheapest option in my area (EU), otherwise it just sits there unsold for months or years. I see buyers paying crazy prices for records on there, presumably because some people just have more disposable income than others.

The problem I’ve had with Discogs is over sellers having items listed that when you buy them, then you get an email that they couldn’t find one or more records or they were damaged and can’t be sold. Yes, I get a refund, but when I buy records, I buy multiple records from the seller who has has the most of what I’m looking for, so I can make as few orders as possible, thus lowering the overall shipping costs because it eats into my buying budget. Then when they do this (and it’s happened like 10 times now), then I have to search with other sellers and it costs me a lot more in shipping having to make more and more orders.

I stopped selling on Discogs because of the fees. I stopped buying on Discogs because there are way too many sellers that over grade and rip people off. Worse is that crooked sellers can easily get negative reviews removed. "What other option is there?" - oldschool record sales. Get some record nerds together and have a sale at a bar or venue. It's a lot more fun than selling online, people have a couple drinks and start buying more stuff, the sellers end up buying and trading a bunch of stuff with each other, etc. It's a hell of a lot more fun and it's cash and no fees.

Even the submission moderators on discogs suck now. There are a few of them that insist on deleting pics & randomly changing info that has been perfectly fine for almost a decade & replacing it with unverified new updated versions and then getting their other friends to outvote everyone else to keep it submitted & they are hellbent on arguing with other content uploaders about it. It's turned into a big dopey nerd fest. You can't even rely on the database for accuracy anymore.

Taking a cut of the seller's shipping charges is reprehensible. When eBay started doing that, I thought "well, many sellers charge a flat rate in an attempt to cover their expenses and goose the selling price a bit -- taking a cut of that makes some sense." But when I realized they took a cut even if I charged actual shipping costs, THAT burned me up. I'm not making that money, the shipping service is -- maybe the platform should take their cut from the shipper, right? Sure.

It's also a spiral. Adding 9% to shipping to cover it means that discogs can then take another 9% of that 9% and so on and so forth - so in reality Discogs isn't making 9 on the 100, but 10 on 109.

Totally agree with you man. When I got the email about increasing fees, it made sense especially given the economic environment globally. I mean, during COVID I wasn't shocked about the increase in shipping cost along with much longer shipping times; that made sense too. Ultimately I look at this increase as directly affecting buyers, so I'm a bit confused as to why the sellers would be so upset about it. I suppose perhaps, an increase in prices will lead to a slowing down in sales? Also, the fee increase is pretty freaking small, like I find it generous on Discogs' part to have not gone higher.

Same as happened with Ebay before, the high prices on Discogs get taken as gospel by sellers who don't have experience to know better, so I find more and more average used records being priced as if they are the sealed mint version that sold before, or the signed version with the rare poster, or whatever legit reason there was to sell a 15$ disc for 40$ I've definitely been emptying my cart of a few treasures when I see what shipping will cost. Don't see it as a daunting task, use the App on your phone, to scan barcodes and enter catalogue numbers, use the App on your PC at the same time (phone App doesn't have all the options) and once your in a rhythm, it goes fast. The best part is the research and "rabbit holes" you end up in. I've learned new incites of the musicians, songs and history, which in turn has lead me to new music. I have a true love/hate with Discogs. As a collector, its been amazing to catalog, make wishlists, cross reference in physical shops, find weird releases I don't find other places. As a seller, the way they do the shipping is a pain in the ass. In a country like Canada, shipping prices can drastically vary from a major city in one province to a smaller town in another, and to make shipping policies for every town in a country would crazy. With the tech out there right now with online shopping, to be able to integrate a system that pulls data from major shipping companies to get accurate pricing would be SOOOO helpful to sellers. As a label owner, of a very small and strange label, I have gone through 2 years of trying to get access to post and edit my own releases due to some random person downvoting my catalog and putting me on CIP. Discogs has not helped me and I have basically just given up on having access to that editing capability. Publishing the sales history of a record or CD does not necessarily push up prices, and I wish people wouldn't automatically assume that it does. As always in a supply/demand environment, sellers can undercut the others any time they want to gain a sale, and they do. If a hundred sellers are charging $50 for an item, the one who charges $40 will probably get the sale. Newer sellers, who do not have many customer ratings, also tend to sell items for lower prices because customers tend to go to the sellers with the most transactions. That puts downward price pressure on the larger sellers. I've seen plenty of items bounce up and down in price; in the end, people will pay what they are willing to pay. I've made over 630 purchases through Discogs in the last 2 years and have found plenty of low-priced bargains.

@@generalsdragons6952 It's just part of the dues to pay when joining an established market. Rightly or wrongly, new sellers are almost forced to offer discount prices in order to get those first few feedbacks. Then, it is up to the larger seller if they want to match the lower prices, some will and some won't. I do think that as a worldwide marketplace, Discogs actually works relatively well, and any bias in pricing is slight and more in the buyer's favor than the seller's.

As we are now also becoming more and more dependent on importing oil at inflated prices. On top of that we are printing money like crazy and piling up national debt and sending 100s of billions out to support unnecessary wars around the world while overwhelming our own cities with millions of un-vetted people from all over the world. Come on in! $2200 a month and free lodging in a place of your choice while homelessness & violence plague our own citizens. Seems like intentional destruction to me. I say leave Discogs alone!! Blaming Discogs (or pressing plants) for high vinyl prices is a stretch beyond a stretch in understanding the real problems that plague us and will not get better on their own if there isn’t a massive wake-up soon! @@georgeholoubek6600 I call BS!! Jan 2021 gas was just $2.10 a gallon here. It got up over 2x that in mid 2021… fluctuating between $3-4 here now. I hear California is now paying $7 a gallon. Brace yourself because gas is going UP more over the next year as the gimmicks of draining the strategic wartime/emergency reserve the last 2 years for political reasons and mid-terms and then buying for highly inflated prices from the middle east and communist South America… it’s gonna backfire either with higher prices or they will just print more money due to 2024 election year… to keep the prices artificially down. That too could backfire though with all the new manufactured money-laundry wars and mass invasion at border - which could literally light us up not just gas issues/prices being much worse by then. 9-11 may look mild in comparison. Hope not.. but it’s where we are headed.

I've been using the site for about 5 years now, and have slowly been using it to catalogue my collection. It has been a great fun project to kill some rainy day spare time in my recent retirement, but have a long way to go. I have about 2000 records and about 2500 CD's. Like you said it is great as a resource. I don't use it to see what my collection is worth, as it is probably going to my kids to deal with after I pass(ha), but i do show them the values of the stuff I have just so they don't get ripped off. I actually bought my first record from a seller just a couple of weeks ago (Teenage Head with Marky Ramone on pink vinyl). The only reason was it was released on wax for the first time and the seller is the manufacturer, based in France of all places, and unavailable in Canada. Record prices these days are horrendously expensive anywhere you go. Used shops, new shops, fleabay, and Discogs, all have taken advantage of the resurgence in wax. Hell, even most artists have taken to flogging represses of their older records and are charging an arm and a leg.

I haven’t bought or sold anything on Discogs in close to a year now. I was never a big seller maybe 30 records at a time and a couple a month would move but since the price increase it has stopped completely. As far a buying I can’t bring myself to paying $30+ for shipping on a $40 record. In the past it was $10-20 which didn’t seem a big deal especially if 2 records were shipped. Sure glad I did the bulk of my buying 3 years ago. These days it’s what ever Blue Note has to offer with free shipping. 😎

For what I use Discogs for I still find value with it. I use it to keep track of my collection (which I just requested an export of my entire collection for the first time in a long time after Frank's speculation of future charges) and I use it for buying albums from my wantlist. I don't buy the first version offered however. I've waited months or even years for some of my purchases until I find one within the price range that I'm willing to spend. My long time gripe about Discogs wantlist however is that we are not able to filter the results that are sent back to us. I don't want to pay overseas shipping and I don't want anything less than VG+. I would like to set those filters in my wantlist so that only albums of that grading and higher being sold in my country of residence are the ones that show up in my inbox.

The biggest problem with discogs is the amount of bad sellers, a lot of them selling fake records, damaged records and etc… and it is very hard to get your money back, paypal doesn’t do a lot of help, I recently bought an album and the package was perfect and the vinyl was broken, had to imagine that it happened on the shipping, the seller refused to take responsibility, another record that I bought a double album it came with with one wrong record in it.

You actually had a seller refuse responsibility ? PayPal will stand behind you if you choose to go that route. I hate hearing about sellers who choose to operate without integrity. Those guys make it increasingly difficult for me. I do everything in my power to sell with honor. Sometimes, that means that I issue a refund and lose money on the return shipping fee, which I pay. I have learned to grade very conservatively, which has helped reduce the need to issue refunds considerably. But again, dropping a grade in Condition cuts the sale price by 50%. Still it's much better to have repeat customers than it is to be dealing with disappointment on the part of the customer. Sure I can add them, but I have been sent angry messages by people saying I’m incomplete or a missed a dash in the runout code. Sooooo…I leave it to these experts. And lately they have been dropping the ball. 2 items to see what I’m talking about. I’m a CD guy. But my collection is over 6000 pieces, and I’m not new to this. Steve Miller Band Joker: J50 CD & and new Van Morrison called Accentuate the Positive also on disc are nowhere to be found. Why? Much more to add and say but I’ll save that for another day. Until then keep up the awesome channel from a longtime viewer.

Part of, no a large part of my love for vinyl is the hunt. With that said, my wife and I decided when we started down this grooved road that we would never purchase anything that we couldn’t physically hold in our hands first. That means no online or through the mail purchases for us. Fortunately we aren’t vinyl collectors but music lovers that enjoy the vinyl experience and only purchase what we listen to and not just albums to sit lifeless on a shelf for years on end. Because our need to “catch them all” isn’t governed by a collector’s obsession to fill holes, we are free to wait patiently for that hard to find album that has eluded us thus far. Also not being a collector and being blind affords me the luxury of not really caring too much about the condition of the jacket or inclusion of sleeves or other promotional items. As long as the vinyl itself is in great playable condition I’m all about it, though my sighted wife is a bit more picky about her selections, lol! I guess it also helps that our area is overflowing with retail record stores and trade shows/expos. If we lived in an area with slimmer pickins’ our buying practices would likely be much different.

Discogs have been really sneaky with adding their fees to shipping cost - I didn't know this before watching your vid - so BIG thanks. I'm not a 'dealer' - I'm just disposing of the unwanted part of a big vinyl collection. Recently, I sold an album for €50 - to ship from France to the US - so the shipping costs were €31.75 - yeah - for one single album?! International shipping costs are increasingly demotivating international buyers. When I looked at the statement from Paypal, the partner fees (ie Discogs) were €14.56. So as I just recharge the actual costs of postage - packaging and my time are free - I am paying €14.56 on a sale of €50 - ie 29%!!! So there must also be an additional 'partner' in this transaction - THIS I find unfair!!!!!!

Forty years ago, when I was first joining the "work-force" and had a job downtown, thee must've been at least 7 or 8 record stores and I went to all of them all the time (every payday) - they were all within a mile of each other. Now there's only one place left that hardly ever has anything I want, and when it does, the price is way too high (32 bucks for the new Stones album for example) - Now we have a Target across the street from the last (formerly) awesome record shop in the downtown area - and, of course, Wal-Mart, which jams the records in the racks (not rack-jobbers, rack-JAMMERS - SHOVERS). It's abysmal. I'm lucky in that one Saturday or Sunday a month in a suburb near my own (20 minutte drive) a record show is held from 9 to 4 (on average) - used and new LPs, CDs. et al - I trust that more than Big-Box shops like Wal Mart & Target. I try to see the good side of shopping there for LPs, but i's not easy. It's the shows I like best these days.

An interesting topic. I've purchased used records from Discogs in the past but not often. I feel that Discogs sellers low ball their price but then make it up on the shipping cost that they charge. (I believe that Discogs knows this and is why they now take a percentage of the shipping cost.) The charge for shipping is too high. The person that is only an occasional seller isn't in a position to make deals with their shipping supplier. For me purchasing a used record on Discogs is a last resort. My entire collection is catalogued on Discogs so I don't purchase the same record twice when I have a perfectly acceptable record in my collection. That for me is the main purpose of Discogs.

My purchases are based on cost + shipping being the lowest first of equal quality. My big gripe is the inaccuracy and incompleteness of many of the records & albums in the music database. They didn't like me correcting information or adding new info, pictures or even new and unique listings. Sometimes, I have a newly-released record, awhile before somebody finally adds them. Some of these new additions are obvious made from sealed records, so there may be no track listings, pressing information or the info scribed in the deadwax.

Hey Frank! I use Discogs as a database too. Never sold anything, as you said, it seems too much trouble to sell anything there. Have bought a few records & have always been very satisfied. If they start charging to merely catalogue my collection, then (probably) I’m gone!

If they start charging to use a database that we, its users, created for them at no cost - then they can go f..k themselves as far as I am concerned. The community did all the actual work.

The artist and title pages now look different. Discogs has charged 8-9% for every sale yet they don't have to go out and buy new or used merchandise. All they have to do is maintain the site and take zero responsibility for liability on sales which is handled through paypal or ultimately civil suit. There's virtually no risk in this business so I understand why they can't make it when they make nearly 10% gravy off of every sale. There are sellers who don't make that and they are doing all of the work.

Aussie here. Was in Cash Converters (second hand / pawn shop) today and noticed that a second hand, well used copy of Jazz by Queen was selling for 90 Aussie dollars. Just Twelve months ago I bought a mint copy of Wish you Were there for 45 Aussies. This vinyl thing is becoming stupid. As a collector of physical media I am going to stick with good old compact discs. The old scratchy, plastic, vinyl can get stuffed.

As a fellow Canadian, I am sure you know that shipping to Canada and from within Canada is insane. So, I have stopped buying from Discogs. Sometimes, the cost of shipping is the same or greater than the price of the record itself!

I quickly soured on Discogs after receiving a 7” single that was listed as the 10” EP. I ended up paying shipping both ways just to get refunded the purchase price. At least eBay requires photos of the item so I know the record listed is the one that is for sale.

While the requirement by eBay to show the item is good, dishonest sellers on eBay sometimes upload a photo they found on the Internet to mislead the buyer.

the problem i had with Discogs time and time again were sellers mid-grading their vinyl. in the end i would only buy from them if they could send a photo of the actual item.

As a database, great! I started a couple of years ago to try and look for records to purchase when I started noticing that the fotos used in the listings for the same records were ALL THE SAME. So I wrote discogs and was told that it was pretty much standard practice to use stock fotos for listings. Sorry, the standard record rating system is no more reliable than the person using it to grade their item for sale (subjective). I need to see the exact item I am purchasing before I buy. The higher the value, the more important this is.

The average cost of making new vinyl has been around $1000 for 100 units.( Nice for novelty or gifts) I was getting 800 records for $1000 in the early 2000s( great profit margins for retail & wholesale) Domestic and International distribution too. Everything has increased….as is life. Imagine the cost of shipping 30 albums from U.S to U.K today?

free shipping is only a sales booster when the item is not one-of-a-kind. I use discogs mostly for research tbh. But the "volunteers" run databases typically run into this issue with users on not getting paid for the amount of work they put in. Not sure how wikipedia has avoided that.

My problem with Discogs is that some probably Automated Users are editing my Submissions. I collect more rare records and there are tons of missing European Schellac Records. So i add them and specifically write the title like it’s written on the label only for a know all user to come and wrongly correct it. When i literally upload pictures of the label. Also its horrible to add new releases, you gotta use your browser because you can’t use the App and then the whole interface isn’t very intuitive and it throws out the most absurd errors and „dublicates“ If there was a good alternative i would be the first to jump ship. Tons of sellers are also selling vinyls for 0,90 cent only to then say they only ship orders 25€ upwards.

What's really annoying me as a buyer is the shipping costs. I'm in Ireland and so tend to buy from European sellers. Shipping for a single vinyl LP should be about €5-7 across Europe. However shipping costs vary wildly depending on the desirability of the LP/CD in question. I can't understand why one record's shipping is €7 but another can be €20+, they all come in a cardboard box through the same postal system. I've passed up on many a purchase because it's screamingly obvioius that I'm being gouged on the shipping costs.

dont forget if an item costs more then to cover loss in transit insurance the shipping cost will be higher, it is always worth asking a seller if they can reduce shipping if you can give them a reason to, they can adjust invoice before you buy
