Discords fading away is also a moral that: if you change to much against your nature, try to be somepony you are not, you are no longer YOU so you dissapear in some way.

I like how this episode shows that flutershy genuinely likes Discord instead oh her just putting up with him to prevent a relapse cause let's face it if Flutter shy ever stopped being friends with him Ponyville is screwed. Also I don't think Discord knew he would ever fade from existence if he ever stopped acting chaotic. That felt like a bit of an after thought so everything he's been doing feels like it was just for the LOLs.

This. So far the Fluttershy/Discord relationship has been the best example MLP has given of love and friendship redeeming a previously antagonistic character. This episode is just showing how far they've come.

I really loved this episode, not only because I'm a Fluttercord fan, but how it showed Fluttershy's thoughts on Discord. I really liked it when Fluttershy arrived at Discord's place and was hoping for something chaotic. This showed us how much Fluttershy enjoys Discord and his shenanigans

I think many of the "duplicate" scenes really helped show how Discord's relationship developed between episodes. Not just that he wants Fluttershy to think well of him, but that *he* wants the best for *her.* There was a lot of implied development that was emphasized quite well in this episode, and apart from the hijinks in his own dimension, which I can agree were filler, I think most scenes were actually very important. At least for me. I mean, a lot of it was stuff that the fans had already attributed to their relationship, but we never really saw it on-screen and canon. They did a lot of character development in a very short amount of time, which I suppose made the main, smaller plot seem less impactful? And really, the hijinks never were completely useless. All of them made some sort of point.
@silasruedin95667 жыл бұрын
I may disagree with you on whether Discord stopping at multiple store fronts was unnecessary; after all, having multiple ponies point out how weird his habits and tastes are compared to Fluttershy's actually helps emphasize that this is the majority's opinion rather than that of only one pony. Also, as filler as many of his antics were, would it really have felt like a Discord episode without them or been as fun? Back in Season 5, "What About Discord?" had kept Discord's powers limited to just changing himself rather than his surroundings and thus felt less absorbing and downplayed as Silver Quill once described it in his After the Fact: Delightful Discord. It's actually 100% as a Discord episode should be.

@Lambdadelta And that attitude is why 'critics' tend to be so looked down on at times. There is no 'expecting more' when there is nothing actually wrong to begin with. It just comes off as complaining about not getting what you personally want without regard to what is actually needed. Or simply not actually getting what the story was in the first place. You need take things as what they are trying to be, not some ideal version of what things should be. Going in with the attitude is just self defeatist. As @RubberCat said, this ep did exactly what it meant to and wanted to. it was not a 'failing' not something that needed 'more' it was precisely what it wanted to be and should be judged based on what that is.

I think the main premise for the episode was simply "FLUFF" and it did its part perfectly with charming Discord and very adorable Fluttershy and VERY cute chemistry and emotional bond between Discord and Fluttershy. Melody Snowflake VA Well, according to her video as to why she's left the fandom, kids deserve more than that and MLP is just wasted potential. And by potential, she means just being another run of the mill fantasy story that I could find in a Dungeons and Dragons campaign. Now, I'm sure that Dragon Queen story she's writing is good, but knowing some of her reasons for writing it, it's kinda hard for me to bring myself to read it.

Her interest changed, it happens to lots of people. So we should just let her move on. I am sad she has stopped making MLP videos, but it is her choice and her opinion and she has good reasons. While I see the appeal of Fluttercord, I still only friend-ship these two. The same differences that make them close friends would make living together impossible imo. I've had that before. You move in with someone you were friends with, or who you loved, and then start to hate each other. Like, if they lived together, would their house be chaotic to keep discord from fading, or calm so fluttershy is comfortable in her own home? If you say the house is half and half, that still means they'd need separate bedrooms, because I'm sure discord sleeps in an upside down, inside out bed that floats between rooms. And fluttershy would probably sleep better attached to the ground, as we see by her preferring the ground and a real bed to a cloud house and cloud bed. Fluttershy was more comfortable in chaos when hanging out with discord, because that's part of the fun. But she still likes her calm, normal house. The best comparison would be: Fluttershy is an introvert, and she still enjoys hanging out with her friends, and being in crowds at concerts and the gala. But at the end of the day, she's an introvert, and she's going to want to go home, read quietly, and sometimes spend an entire day alone to recharge. Same with the chaos/normal she has with discord. She enjoys the chaos, but she still likes going home to normalcy and spending entire days alone without anything chaotic happening. It doesn't mean she doesn't like discord, it's a facet of her personality. If you like a romantic relationship of the two, I'm not going to fight you, but so many people give up one of the two's personalities and preferences in order to make the relationship work, and generally, it's fluttershy's comfort that gets nuked.
@alby4087 жыл бұрын
I personally think that for people who still don't really get why fluttershy and Discord are friends this episode really told why they are and that yes they do know and understand each other very well and that they really are friends because they enjoy each other's company not just to put a hold on discord
@multismashify7 жыл бұрын
I get the distinct impression that the lack of story was purposeful in order to make the most out of Discord's appearance, filling run time with as many visual gags as possible. Discord is not a character who shows up all the time, which is perhaps a good thing (don't want to get burnt out on him), and as such, better to get the most you can get out of his chaotic nature while he's here.
@Bookmite17 жыл бұрын
I honestly think you have the wrong idea about those scenes with Discord shopping. On one hand, yes, it shows others don't quite understand why the two get along. On the other hand, it would have made the ending less powerful, when Fluttershy showed just how much she understands Discord by mentioning and even trying to recreate the very things he originally created for her. True, they could be shown in a faster way, but that would have thrown off the entire progression of the episode. Honestly, it gave us exactly what we wanted, Discord being Discord.

To me, this was one of those "take it or leave it" episodes for the reasons you were saying; it's more gag driven than story driven. Here's the thing though, while there is a massive amount of viewers 18-35+ years of age, we forget that this show is and forever will be geared towards a much younger audience. Most kids are not looking for a plot heavy show, just entertainment; and a show of running gags provides that. I'm not saying kids are stupid and can't handle it, but nearly every kid of their generation I've come across does not have a very long attention span out side of flashing pictures from video games. That being said, I thought the next episode "The Perfect Pear" was awesome, but it was also more story driven.

I disagree that there wasn't enough plot. By having multiple ponies in different stores making the same observation, it makes Discord's growing uncertainty more understandable. He's not typically the type to care what some random person thinks, but if multiple ponies come to the same conclusion, then it would make one wonder if maybe they have a point. Part of the story is about following Discord's thought process. We see him planning the tea party, his growing doubts, and the amount of work and dedication it takes for him to transform his home. If we skipped the thought process, then the setup would feel forced and out of character.

I don't think Discord episodes necessarily need a lot of story. Heck, this isn't the first such episode where he learns a fairly mundane lesson. Make New Friends but Keep Discord is the same in that regard. It's the visual humour and just the way Discord approaches a given situation that makes his episodes memorable for me, along with his personality, and this one is no exception. If anything, a paper thin plot just leaves more room for trademark Discord moments.
@mix-up90037 жыл бұрын
I actually think that the episode was more reminiscent of the earlier episodes of MLP where it was more visual gags and lots of unexpected goofy stuff that got me interested in MLP in the first place. The theme of the episode was put more on the backseat and the dialogue was less important and it was the characters weird out reactions to the surreality of their situation that made it all fun. The episode were much less dialogue heavy bogging the flow and pacing and more breathing space with some quite and let the scene speak for it self, to just allow to appreciate the scene. This episode was very close to that source with Discord's antics like twisting reality to fit nonsense expressions word play and figure of speech into reality and watch how the other characters react, which we saw a lot of that in the early episodes. I would agree that there was some scenes that could have been cut shorter and used to better effect elsewhere. I think it was more that Fluttershy's reactions in the episode could have better been flushed out, as I felt that her concerns for Discord fell disingenuous or not properly show with maybe an added a scene with Discord meeting her while he is getting all his tea party supplies and she her mostly oblivious how or add his pressure of pleasing her, despite her stating that anything is fine with her, maybe point out better that she is his only friend too, and maybe add how sensitive and shy she is in general that would cast some doubt on that statement. Maybe show how Shy can easy read Discord's tells of form his body of what he is really feeling, like with her animals and that is one way for her to better relate to with him. There could be some added concern form her or some giddiness of seeing what he will come up with for the tea party.

Why I think the story was so "lacking" for lack of a better term: When it comes to Discord, he tends to make a big scene out of every little thing. Especially in the case of Fluttershy, things that seem small and simple to get through are a big thing for him, and that's what I love about Discord. When it comes to social interaction, I'm not the best. I tend to miss the big things and focus on the little things. Add to that the fact that a lot of things Discord's had to deal with in past episodes are a lot like things I've had to deal with, and my knack for making a 2 minute conversation seem like Shakespeare wrote it with how much I go on, and having a Discord episode seem like "50% Story, 50% added stuff" fits right up my alley. So in short - I love a light Discord Ep, and I wouldn't mind seeing it again, however, I think that Discord is the only one this would really work with. Had it been anyone else, the point would've been made one pony in, but Discord does drag things out... like I am with this comment... oops XD

What do I think? I think this is a great episode. Discord is always great with the gags. But, more importantly... the NEXT episode... I'm waiting.

I agree that the story was a little thin. However, I think that the thinness works in the story's favour at parts. Take Dr Wolf's example of the three stores. I agree that storywise you only needed one. But doing this scene in multiple locations and between multiple parties serves a purpose: to make Discord concerned. One pony telling him that Fluttershy and him don't work as friends is an annoyance. Multiple doing the same thing? It'll start leaving an impression.

Personally, I had a blast with this episode. It knew when to focus on the comedy, and the different stores gave us three variations of the same joke while keeping it funny. Plus, reinforcing Discord's doubt with three different clerks seemed more in-character for him, as just one pony saying it wouldn't send him into such a hilarious panic. He wouldn't- and didn't -take a single snarky comment seriously. It took three times. Also, no comments on how adorable Fluttershy's expectations were? Odd.

It was a good Discord episode, but actually this is my favourite Fluttershy episode.

I love this episode! Even if you don't ship it (which I do ship it) their friendship is still adorable as heck! I love how Discord tried to get Fluttershy to feel more comfortable at the house and Fluttershy was disappointed with how normal his home looked. They even had similar ideas; stairs that go no where, tea that actually sings! So great that they're so in sync with each other. And the lesson, oh my gosh I loved the lesson, so great! You can definitely understand how Discord really works with this episode, and just ugh; I love it! It could have been cut down a little bit, but I personally loved it for what it was. So great. (In my opinion of course).

since this was a discord episode I enjoyed it but there is a few things bother me. if there another universe where he just being normal not himself while he is not realising what's going to happen to him. I agree with this review and it's a great episode to fresh up those who had hard day's can laugh joyfully to. great review drwolf.

This episode gave us more hints that Fluttercord will be canon. I mean c'mon, Fluttercord is most likely to be canon than Dislestia.

Sonic Gamer When Discord realizes how much effort Shy puts into their weekly parties and looks around at the stuff she made, it shows the plate his Fingers ate off of! and there's a big piece of bread left on it that was left in a heart shape

Yes, because male and female characters just can't be friends. They must always be romantically involved.

I interpreted the fading away to mean that when you try to conform your own uniqueness is gone. But yes, good world building. He doesn't have a reason to exist if he's not instilling chaos.

This episode helps reveals why the strict 22 minute limit for most kids shows like this can cause the plot to suffer. You're right that this episode could easily have been 11 minutes, the length of a typical Steven Universe episode, and still worked really well, and there are times when episodes could really do with a longer run time than what they were given. I suppose that's just par for the course with network television though. The shenanigans were inoffensive, and the moral of the episode still came across well, so I still enjoyed it a lot. I actually feel that, for example, the episode could easily reflect the struggles of people like LGBT folk who find themselves feeling forced to change themselves to better fit society's expectations of them, and not have their peers reject them, and thus end up cursing themselves to non-existence i.e. "death", because they can't maintain it and it destroys them.

Looking forward to your review of "A Perfect Pear" and not only the reveal of the Apple Parents but Will Shatners performance as Gran Pear.

Honestly it felt like you were just looking for something negative just so you can have a flaw to talk about. Being just a simple story with a fun Discordy twist on it is kinda the whole point.
