One of the high points of our Big Island travels was about 15 years ago we took a tour down that road, but we stayed at Tom Araki's "hotel" for 3 nights. We had a great time. We brought him a bottle of sake & he made up a bowl of dry land taro with the loveliest sauce. I think it was simply mayonnaise & soy sauce, but it was yummy. He had 2 dogs of many years of age and I took them for a walk toward the back of the valley. Everyone recognized Tom's dogs so I was well protected from the many hostile dogs down there. Lots of folks who just want to be left in peace. Another day we hiked to Hililawe falls, but were unable, even with the dogs to get to it. We also spent time on the beach, but the tourists were overwhelming. Such impolite haoles, leaving their garbage all over the beach, etc. The next day, Tom's family came out to work in the family taro patch. Nice folks and now they have a restaurant in Kaimuki, O'ahu. We ate there on our last visit. Hawaiian food, local style. When we left, we hiked up that road. It is a slog. Personally, I'm glad they closed it off so the kanaka maoli can farm & carve and do what they do for a living in peace.

Mahalo. Apart from one group trip to Waipio Valley this is a part of Hawaii Island least familiar to me. Hopefully I will return one day to explore it further. Aloha!

For the first half of this video, your artistry really started to show ... you are becoming a cinematographer! Nicely done. 👏BTW, when we travelled this coast, it was pouring with rain as well - guess it *is* after all a rainforest! ⛈

What a beautiful video! We must have been at Tex at about the same time (the beginning of May) - rain was pouring driving there from Puako, the line inside and out was just as long :)) Thank you for the wonderful scenery tour!

Love Honomu goat dairy! We go there every time we visit. Also, I saw you mentioned a friend from Culinary edge TV. I haven’t seen his videos yet, but I saw him on a Ryan Myers video. I’ll have to check him out. Thanks for the great content.

Thanks for the video. How long will the road into Waipio valley be closed? We plan to visit next month. Tex’s yum!
@LifeontheBigRock2 жыл бұрын
The road will be closed at least for a couple years, they are only in the stage of figuring out how to make it safer.

How does Tex's compare to Punalu'u? Where was that oldest Mac nut factory? I may make that a stop on my trip in September. :-)
@LifeontheBigRock2 жыл бұрын
Punalu'u is a bakery so it takes the cake, Tex drive inn is a close second. Oldest Mac farm is in Honoka'a, just makai off the main road.
