No one should miss the authentic Japanese Taiyaki in Captain Cook. Same spot as Randy’s Huli chicken except Thursday and Friday. Their Taiyaki is the most delicious food I had during my three-week vacation on Big Island.

Oh I love Hawaiian food so much 🤤. Shave ice is so much better than your typical snow cone, the ice is shaved so fine and they serve it with ice cream and a drizzle of sweetened condensed milk...yum.

FYI....K-u-h-i-o Grille...You're 1/2 right on lau-lau. It's chunks of beef, pork & butterfish(aka black/ling cod) wrapped in taro leaves(aka elephant ears). That's wrapped in ti leaves, or aluminum foil. Traditionally, it's cooked in imu(underground oven) alongside whole pig, sweet potatoes & other dishes served at a luau. Contemporary cooks steam lau-lau >5-6hrs....

This was great! Made me so homesick for Hawaiian food. These places weren't there the last time we were on Big Island. Kona Brewing was there and we went a few times. The best view we found was the Wendy's on the road down from Capt. Cook on the way to Kahalu'u Beach Park. It was half way down and the view-spectacular. It's probably something else now. I like that you shared places that were not fancy so normal people could perhaps afford it. Mahalo

The BBQ Chicken Pizza at Black Rock is my favorite with their pepperoni rolls and Dragon fruit Li hing mui Margarita! 🍹 Soo good! Tropics in Keauhou has the best Coconut Shrimp 🥥 🍤 😋 And you MUST order Kona Inn's Mud pie and Pina Colada. Thier mai tais are the bomb too. Kai Loki's in Ocean View has great Ultimate Burgers and fries. If you're on the east side in Hilo...Definitely check out Blanes Drive in they have ono burgers and strawberry with vanilla ice cream slushies. Cinnabon at the Prince Kuhio Plaza is perfect if you want something sweet. Punalu'u Bakery has the most amazing Strawberry and Guava Malasadas and their Kona coffee macadamia ice cream are to die for. I'm a local born and raised here. I approve. You're welcome 😊 😆

When I was at the Punaluu Bake shop last time, I didn’t have a good experience. One of the young girls there served me ice cream and tried to ring up a purchase I wanted to make. Her boss came over and admonished her that she gave us too much ice cream right in front of us. The young girl was embarrassed and we felt bad for her and it didn’t leave a good impression

You complain about long wait times, you might want to consider that during covid there was a mass exodus from the island of serving and cooking staff. It is still spotty as the housing market went crazy and priced a lot of folks out of the market and those folks are the wait staff at a lot of the restaurants you mentioned.

Suggest you YELP the restaurants before dining to be aware of the poor customer service and excessive wait times. Many restaurants have poor customer service and overcharge their customers with grossly inflated prices and sometimes hidden fees these days (locals call them Tourist traps since tourists are rich).
