The best way to clean this up is to use a neutralizer. Typically a good neutralizer would be baking soda and water. Do not dip your stone in this water as the stones are usually porous and will absorb the baking soda and water which could lead to false gold test readings. Otherwise you can simply use a paper towel to wipe off the test stone.

Hello, great video, I like that "Gold is where you find it" it's funny. 🙂 I have a question though. I bought this ring and it's stamped 18 K I tested it with the 18K acid. At first the scraping stayed on the tile for about 5-6 seconds, but then it started to fade until it slowly dissapeared. Leaving a very very faded discoloration on the tile. This took about 3 minutes. Does this mean the ring isn't gold?

The next test would be to either cut the piece, file into it, to get below the surface. Then the acid would have to be placed directly on the filed mark and yes it will leave a mark when the reaction either happens or doesnt happen.

many jewelers have one but most use the acid test. there are many type machines to use. I used the acid test for 45 years and worked good for me but we all are different. thanks

What if it's heavily gold plated do the acid tests still work?
@PickersInc1112 жыл бұрын
you can file into it and test it but usually if you rub it on the touch stone, it show in the test. after handling it you can tell by feel and looks - thankks for the comment

yeah it stays blue on the napkin. it throws me off every time. 10k acid tells me nothing even on fakes. so i have to try 14k acid on everything. just thought it might be one of those reactions that look fake but is not. like white gold bubbling green cause of the high nickle base.

I refine gold at home. gotten good @ it. one batch completely survived 22k sol. I have a batch that lifted up off stone a little bit under 22k sol but did not dissolve. Do not have a 24k sol (i know buy one) safe to say it's 22k?

was just thinking - after prospecting for 40 years in CAl. I remember some nuggets that were black that turned a little blue, we found them in Big Bear and Silver Lake, but the mark stayed on the touch stone.

What happens if you mix Chlorine ,peroxide, vinegar,salt,lime juice, 3 drops of water, salt, emergen-c vitamin c partial packet , magnesium , and add heat then pour the mixture on gold and get a blueish reaction?? :/

@PickersInc11 Thank you for responding. how come when I DRIP the acid on the test stone the acide runs all over the stone and it makes it very difficult to examine the gold? I try to drop a very little drop but no matter what It runs far off the stone.

Iron would be easy to detect simply by using a strong magnet. Gold by nature is nonmagnetic iron by nature is. Copper on the other hand is a little more difficult but I believe the file test would prove to determine if not gold.

18K stamp in it. When I tested it with the 18k acid, first the scraping stayed for some 6 seconds but than it started fading very slowly. After a few minutes it dissapeared leaving only a small smudge of not gold color. Does this normally happen if you leave the acid on too long? Or is the ring not gold?

Good video but if you want to keep the interest of your viewers you have to change the intro camera angle, this will make people stop watching this video based on your initial camera angle before getting to the good part, keep it up but please initiate the subject instantly, you are not the subject nor is the back of this man's neck. Just my thoughts!

Before I sold my gold chain on ebay I also had a scrap gold guy do the same for me. The gold chain came back as 14k and the guy even went through the trouble of showing me how the acid reacts to other metals, etc. Even electronically tested it. Sold it on ebay for a nice price and then I get a message from the buyer now claiming it's not gold. So I'm very very cautious with this since ebay is known to rip off people. Honestly I don't think I will ever sell gold on ebay again because of their policies. I haven't heard from the buyer since they said they'd take it to a jeweler to get tested. I'm sure it's 100% 14k.

Lots of scamming buyers on ebay who buy something and claim it's broken or not as described to get the ebay refund so they can have it for free. If I am sure I am right, I tell them they have two choices: return it on their dime or keep it. No freebies or discounts.
@wdwood1237212 жыл бұрын
You will not be testing to see what metal it is but to tell if the metal you are testing is pure gold. Unfortunately when you are dealing in precious metals on the value of these metals is inflated you will have those who will try to scam others. Unfortunate but it happens so we must be a careful as possible!!

There is no senses in using 24K Gold for a wedding ring. 24K is pretty soft. Remember the western movie where they use their teeth to test gold? That works for real. Rings are always made from an alloy and therefore are less then 24K.

24k gold is absolutely 100% gold or pure gold but 10, 14 or 18 are not 100% gold . It is a mixture of gold and silver or mixture of gold and platinum to make the gold a little bit harder. Besides the lesser the k of gold, the lesser percentage of gold present in the jewelry. If you're just testing the purity of gold this test does not apply because a jewel less than 24K is not pure gold .
