The Supremes continued on after Diana Ross left the group in 1970. Mary Wilson carried on the legacy with Cindy Birdsong, and new member Jean Terrell, later on Linda Laurence, Scherrie and Susaye Greene became members of the legendary group, discover these lost albums and classic records

I met Mary Wilson 2 years ago when she was at Book Expo starting to publicize Supreme Glamour. I told her that my favorite 70s Supremes song was Nathan Jones and that my middle name is Nathan. She signed her autograph "To Harry, my own Nathan Jones". She then said g " Nathan Jones you been gone too long.>>I joined in. This was a great moment . I miss Mary so much.

The real name of "Stoned Love" is "Stone Love." If you listen closely, you can hear that they're singing "stone." An engineer accidentally wrote "Stoned" on the tape box and it went out that way. 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖 Thank you for doing this video to educate folks about all of the great Supreme's songs. 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖

The night Jean Terrell debuted, Berry Gordy told Mary Wilson he 'washed his hands' of the group because he wanted Jean fired before she started. After that, he offered NO support to the group. And despite him, the group kept scoring on the charts, even if not at the top.

One major comment that needs correcting: Mary NEVER owned the name 'The Supremes'. All she was ever awarded (by Motown after a lengthy and expensive court case) was fifty percent of one third of the name. After this happened, she decided to quit the group. Her final performance (as a Supreme) was on 12th June 1977 in London at the Theatre Royal. I was there. Mary then sold her entire share of the trademark to Motown. Then she tried to tour using the trademark and Motown took her to court for infringement. She lost the case and it cost her a lot of money. To this date, Scherrie (introduced to the group through LAMONT DOZIER) still fronts former ladies of The Supremes (with Susaye and Joyce Vincent beside her) and as the Queen Supreme Miss Ross puts it: 'This group is authentically keeping the legacy alive". It's great that someone has taken the time to make this very informative video. Thank you.

They were as popular as ever, but, according to Billboard's "Top Pop Singles" (1955-12002), none of the '70s songs were RIAA-certified gold singles. Doesn't matter to me: I can sing Nathan Jones backwards and forwards (and have been able to do that since 1972!!) or Floy Joy, or Stoned Loved, or Bad Weather, or ANY of those singles I have most of their albums up until they disbanded (There are SOME benefits to being 70! And that's one of 'em: being around and young back in the 60s and 70s and having all these records!)
@SWDetboy
@SWDetboy 3 жыл бұрын
@@fertusherring3476 Your right.. But Motown did not register with the RIAA until the middle 1970s, they had their own dept with sales, they didn't want to report publicly sales, they handed out their own gold records to their artists. The RIAA only certified a handful of Supremes gold records in the middle 1970s because that's when Motown signed with them, and Motown only reported so much to them at that time & the public. When Mary Wilson & Diana Ross got their gold records from the 60s era from the RIAA, it was in the middle 1970s. they received a total of 23 gold records from Motown..
@fertusherring3476
@fertusherring3476 3 жыл бұрын
@@SWDetboy Interesting. I trust what you say, although it's odd why they did this: a (Supremes) album received RIAA certification (Gold) much earlier, in 1968. Then the "TCB" album with the Supremes and the Temptations was RIAA certified gold. You think that, perhaps, Gordy kept the singles (45s) division reporting separate from the albums??

This was wonderful! Thank you for repping the 70's Supremes. It wasn't something I knew about initially either, that they had continued without Diana Ross but it has since become my favourite period of The Supremes. No disrespect to Ms. Ross, but to me, The Supremes were always most interesting when you could hear them as a group. I think a lot of that was lost in those last albums as Diana Ross & The Supremes. I'm also glad you showed some love for their 75 self-titled album. Despite being a bit of a grab-bag, it's also one of my favourites and as I recall, one of Mary Wilson's too. May she rest in peace.

Nice review of the 70s Supremes. The group had a lot of great songs and an interesting history from 1970 to 1977. Jean Terrell is my second favorite Supreme (Diana, of course, is my favorite.) She has the sweet, flirtatious sound that Diana had so she was perfectly adept at continuing the music in that vein. Sherrie is a very talented singer and I enjoy the many disco songs on those albums. She was the perfect singer for that very deliberate transition. It's a shame the group didn't have more success in the 70s. They did all the right things, in my opinion. As for Return to Love, Diana noted on Oprah the Sherrie and Lynda were real Supremes with a history with the group, putting to rest criticism to the contrary. The three ladies, although disappointed that the tour was canceled, had a wonderful experience with each other.

Good review. The 70s Supremes were more consistent hit makers on the UK charts than the original DMF line up. Stoned Love was their biggest UK hit reaching No3 on the official UK Singles chart. Nathan Jones was recorded by Bananarama and released as a single as a cheeky nod to the fact that if it charted they would overtake the Supremes in number of UK chart hits. You missed the 3 albums the Supremes recorded with the Four Tops. Berry Gordy undermined the career of the 70s Supremes in favour of Miss Ross. They were starved of any aggressive promotion by Motown. In the UK 1974 saw the rise of The Three Degrees who replaced them as the most bankable girl group as far as chart success, TV and concert appearances- The Three Degrees were EVERYWHERE. When the relaunched Supremes were debuted in 1975 their career failed to catch fire, singles ignored by UK BBC Radio 1 and few TV appearances scuppered their chances sadly. Thankfully they recorded so much great music that we have forever!

Almost 10 years to the day The Three Degrees would become only the 2nd girl group to hit top spot reaching No1 with When Will I See You Again? (US Billboard No2). They were signed to Gamble & Huff's Philadelphia International Label for a couple of years. They were far more successful in the UK & Japan that back home in the US.

In truth the 70's Supremes were far stronger than the original Supremes, and that is the reason why Berry Gordy stop promoting them because it became a conflict of interest with Diana's career, because immediately The Supremes continued to get hits with the amazing Jean Terrell, while Diana's career stalled. This was also mentioned in the broadway Motown play, the new Supremes were an upgrade of beauty and talent, and if Berry and Motown would have put the same energy, monies, and promotion, behind any group of 70's Supremes, I believe the 70's Supremes would have surpassed the original group, because they were far more talented, versatile and visually pleasing

Also, part of the problem early in Diana’s solo career was all of the show tunes and covers Berry kept wanting g her to sing, instead of promoting the original songs. A lot of the GOOD songs on her early solo albums are the album cuts.

The album with the two supposed signatures of Kaaren Ragland and Karen Jackson was released in the UK with a different cover, just three sets of red lips, and three silver mics on a black background. This album was heavily promoted and went to number one on the UK album charts providing an ideal opportunity for live appearances, so Karen and Kaaren were drafted in by Mary. I saw Mary, Karen and Kaaren at The London Palladium where they appeared at a sellout house. They wore the black velvet heavily beaded dresses worn by Diana, Mary and Cindy at Dianas' farewell concert in Las Vegas on January 14, 1970. The show was great as well as many of the hits they sang much of the later material record by the final lineup. I have followed The Supremes since they first came to the Uk in 1964 and saw each different lineup all the way through to their final performance, then Mary as a solo artist, the last time I saw her was at The Cavern Club Liverpool June 2017. I had the pleasure of meeting her several times, she was always gracious and charming. She is sadly missed. Loved the video thanks so much.

While on vacation and staying at the Fountainebleau Hotel in Miami in 1968, Shelley Burger -- who at the time was the manager for both the Temptations and Supremes -- took in a live show of Ernie Terrell & The Heavyweights. Ernie's sister, Jean was the lead singer. Burger was impressed and contacted Barry Gordy who checked out the group the following night. Gordy met with Jean after the show and offered her a 5-year contract on the spot. For the first 2 years of her contract, Motown had her recording various songs trying to find the right "sound" for her. After plans fell threw to bring in Syreeta Wright, then married to Stevie Wonder, as the new Supremes lead singer, Gordy had Jean join the group.

I've closely followed the group for decades and its cool that you personally delved into them at this point in your life. An observation: The Bananarama part of your vid was over two minutes long and distracting from the main topic. I actually started to wonder if the wrong video was posted. It feels like you personally wanted to give air time to Bananarama -and did so by linking it to how you became interested in the Supremes. A sentence or two about Bananarama re-recording Nathan Jones would have achieved the latter. A nice job by you, nonetheless! So, many thanks!

Cindy left and Susaye came in because Mary’s husband was not a nice person and was now managing the Supremes. Cindy was a trooper and came back after the Supremes officially folded because there were still contracted Supremes dates in Chile and Argentina. Karen & Karen came in be with Mary after all the official Supreme concert dates where fulfilled. I believe Mary added Karen & Karen to her act because she lacked confidence on the stage as a solo artist. This was a bridge to build her solo career. Mary is missed everyday 🙏🏼

The 70s Supremes should have been MUCH more successful and memorable than they are. Their sound (no matter the lineup) was outstanding, and they had multiple jams and gems. Bangers on every album. I remember those songs on the last two albums getting much airplay. And there were songs that SHOULD have been singles and weren’t. 💜💫✨🤌🏾🔥

Great info. Yes, I remember... and I think I still have.... all those albums. You didn't mention "Don't Let the Teardrop Bother You", which was a great solo ballad for Mary. And the two Magnificent 7 albums with the Four Tops. I thought "River Deep, Mountain High" was a hit for them from the first Magnificent 7...???

You're very lucky to have such a treasure. I'm very curious about Mary's death, it seemed so sudden. I'm wondering if she died shortly after getting a covid shot. I would have liked to see Diana's reaction when she heard the news.

Very accurate.. And a very good review. I followed every word. You gay facts. I know cuz I've been with the Supreme since the 60s on through when they did the last album... I just wish Diana and Mary could have put their differences aside and gave the fans One More tour. I was told Cindy could have even been involved if the $ what's right..

I always wanted to know who went into The Supremes dressing room and stole their gowns but a lady in France saw one of their gowns at a thrift store a few yrs. back. The gowns were stolen in the 70s and then pops up in the thrift around 2018.

Wait! The supremes made music in the 70’s?!?!?! Like..... who was singing the lead after MISS DIANA ROSS left the group? WHY did they even try to continue without a star lead singer?!

Supreme brand continue Mary Wilson who started with the supreme generally stay throughout just about the whole supreme brand they were just several replacement of lead singer or replacement of another side singer but Mary kept the group up and she would recommend a lead singer sometimes she will sing leave but she was more comfortable with somebody else being in front but they had a lot of hits in the '70s particularly the early seventies just as many as the original group you should look up and Google The Supremes music hits from the '70s

You should add text to correct the error that Scherrie was the new lead singer after Jean left. Only Diana and Jean were actual leads of the Supremes. When Jean left, Mary created an ensemble act without an appointed lead. She and other members very equally shared leads. This fact is also noted in Mary's second book.

I could not divorce myself from The original Supremes (especially Diana Ross) It wasn't the same group even though the name was the same. I liked one of their songs (Nathan Jones) but they didn't capture the glamour (lead by Diana Ross). No one really Defined the group after a Diana left. They just all sang together, and worked the group like a 9-5. None of their voices really stood out unless Jean Terrell was leading. And I never understood why Mary Wilson being in the group so long didn't even speak up or used her clout finally, to do solos. I later sadly heard her singing voice on KZbin, and she had a gritty and husky voice that had no definitive sound.

There were only two officially appointed full leads of the Supremes: Diana Ross and Jean Terrell, both selected by Berry Gordy. When Jean left, it was a major blow to the group, and Motown abruptly ceased record production on them for over a year. Meanwhile Mary worked to restaff and reinvent the group as an ensemble act. She very evenly shared leads with Scherrie (and later Susaye) on all lps and performances. Scherrie was never an appointed third lead...there never was a third lead. Also, with Jean's departure, the "unique Supremes" lead vocal sound projected by her and Diana was gone and the group sounded much more commonplace.
