I've only played one main series dragon quest game and that was dragon quest 9. I played monsters joker 2, but didn't like that even half as much as I did dragon quest 9. I am extremely excited for this game. It seems like this game's world is going to be very customizable and interactive. Interactive in the sense that your actions bring about more changes to the game, as in the haven.

Honestly 9 is one of the weakest entry, so anything from there should be pretty great. You should give 5 remake on PS2 a go if you can. Or play the DS version if you can't emulate. As said before, get hyped for 8, second best entry following 5 IMO . 7 is pretty good, but nowhere close those two.

I'm really enjoying my experience thus far. The storyline in particular. It's incredible how simplistic it's written, yet it has such depth! There's so many layers to everything you read, and I find that so cool. I also especially love the encounter system of being able to run away from monsters you can actually see if you're good enough. RPGs are my favorite genre, but random encounters have always irked me about them, so that (coupled with the story, and awesome old school battle system) makes this just about the most perfect RPG I've ever played. It's already one of my favorites. I don't even think I'm very far in it. I just collected my first fyyg and saved the guy who changes vocations.

So hyped about this. It's the only one I haven't tried or played through apart X. Enjoyed almost every game in main series. Ok, VI was rather uncomfort to play and I and II are a bit dated obviously but they aren't bad games, not. Good starting point for series might be either this, IV V, VIII or IX depending on how modern you like your RPGs. Anyways, hopefully this game sparks more DQ games and gamers here in west. :)

towerofnix yes, this was done to save time, rather than developing an entire new engine, or use a more primitive one as DQ 9 was the newest and most advanced DS engine for the time. unsure what DQ 8 3ds uses, its in a completely different style.

The PS1 version is not near as good to me, but this 3DS remake has a lot of improvements that should make it a lot better. I am really looking forward to it. The DQ games do not change as much between installments as Final Fantasy does if you loved VIII I think there is a very good chance you would like this, IV-VI and IX for the DS. Even I-III are good but are really dated, depends on how old you can go with your RPGs.

Well, the 3DS version of DQXI has a 16-bit option. It'd be great if DQXII was 8-bits-styled, DQXIII was 16 bits, DQXIV was 2-D 64 bits and DQXV had full capacity cel-shaded graphics.

IX (SoSSkies), X (the mmorpg) and mobile game DQ Walk are the only ones where you create your own characters at the beginning/on the way. VII has preset characters like DQ I-VI, VIII and XI but when you change their vocation (job/class) later in the game, their clothes/looks change to fit the vocation

The original one? I would say well over a hundred. The story itself is exceptionally long and detailed. The game also required a certain amount of grind because it was pretty hard but it's clever grind I'm talking about. The slimes for example, most basic enemies in the game, can call for reinforcement. If too many of them are present simultaneously, they can merge into a king slime and become much more dangerous. However, if you manage to avoid that, you can get a whole lot of experience by killing them and waiting for them to call for reinforcement. Especially efficient at the beginning.

Each game is its own story though DQ 1 - 3 are connected and DQ 4 - 6 are connected, but you don't have to enjoy them in order. DQ 7 was on the PSone and got remade 4 years ago in Japan. now we are finally getting it. its completely remastered and its basic a entirely new game. we are also getting another DQ game Dragon Quest 8 3ds is coming in January 2017. its argueably the best DQ game as the Characters look more grown up. Dragon quest should have been the crown jewel in SE eye instead of Final Fantasy which it copys crom.

They are up to 11 now actually, plus spin-offs. The series started in 1986 though, so that's not really a lot.

I'm planing on getting DQVII[Remake], DQVIII[Remake], DQX (If it ever comes to the USA), and DQXI. I already have DQIX (10/10, one of the best RPGs I've played), and DQVI (3.5/10 Since I played DQIX first, not being able to view the monsters on the map running at me made it feel like a horrible game, I just can't downgrade games).
