Knifetime Story

Күн бұрын

BPS Knives is a knife company that I had never heard of up until two weeks ago. After purchasing a couple, I may have a new favorite maker! What gets me is how they can produce such an absolutely fantastic knife for so little money. It doesn’t seem right. I would easily pay $100 or $125 respectively for those knives. Knife manufacturers, you would likely associate with that price range don’t even come close in the consistent quality department. Condor knives are close to double the price, but 1/2 of the quality. Every Condor knife I’ve ever purchased had some sort of issue with either the edge or the handle. Both of the BPS knives have been flawless right out of the box and that includes the sheaths as well. Razor-sharp and perfectly finished on both blade and handle. They are using very high-quality leather in their sheaths. Not something you would expect from a $33.00 knife. You will pay more than that for just a sheath on any site.
Maybe something is wrong with the algorithm that figures out what these knives should actually cost on the exchange rate, maybe they actually should be costing over $100 and someday somebody’s gonna catch on. But in the meantime, do the right thing, I know it’s a small part but anything would help Ukraine and its shattered economy. I would like to see all of my knife collecting in life using brethren using and owning multiple BPS knives!
Thank you very much to Dutch Bushcraft knives for doing a video on these and introducing me to them. I hope everyone who watches this immediately goes out and buys one or two… Why not even just by three!

@@knifetimestory Arrived today. I've spent about an hour giving it an extra bit of tissue slicing sharpness (which it didn't quite have) and then doing some whittling of hard dry pine/cedar. The handle fits my normal/large hands, slender fingers, perfectly. The edge bites deep or finely shaves as desired. The grind is even, the spine is sharp, the fit and finish is very good for the price and the sheath is excellent; all as portrayed in all the KZbin videos that I watched. I'm delighted with it and have let BPS know, also wishing them a very Merry Christmas and a victorious New Year.

@edwin mason Heinnie Haynes? No, I got it direct from BPS in Ukraine. It took 5 or so weeks. The 1066 takes a good edge but it does corrode very easily even after a forced patina, the edge of course has no patina after sharpening, but a quick strop removes any oxide. I'd choose stainless where possible.

According to a Ukrainian metal worker called Dimitros who posted on the DBK video about BPS, 1066/65G is a Soviet spring steel. It's not as hard as 1095 but has much better toughness, tensile strength & edge retention with correct heat treatment 👍 If it's used in the suspension of trucks & tanks, then Ukraine currently has an almost limitless supply from destroyed Ruzzian vehicles 🔥💣😜👍 #SlavaUkraini💙💛

Thank you very much for that valuable information. I truly appreciate it. It is a very tough knife blade. I’ve had no rolling or chipping or denting. And you are right, they do have a lot of supply of that steel on hand now. And most of it has been annealed.

All edges were sharp and even had burrs and the lanyard hole, joil, and what was supposed to be jimping looked(!) like it was plasma cut. ...plus the uneven grind you had mentioned in another video (I think). But, if you want more expensive stuff(70-80$) I highly recomend Blade Brothers, another top tier ukrainian company. Their main focus is self defence, kitchen and bushcrafting/tourist knifes. They're more modern looking with plastic sheaths, handles and made with great stress testing in mind. In the military a lot of guys buy from them because they can come in clutch , so you can say they are battle tested.

Just so you know that despite our recent differing views on Spyderco folding knives I do listen to your sage advice and as a result of this video invested in one of these $33.00 knives. The 1st thing I noticed was the “rich Corinthian leather” (as Ricardo Montalbán once said) of the sheath. The fit & finish of the walnut wood scales and sharpness out of the box of the blade were also impressive. I’m leaving the TX heat behind and heading to CO next week where I hope to test this knife on a fishing/camping trip. Thank you for your advice on this knife.

Then I took the handle off, and found rust on the Tang. Sanded it off, coated with mineral oil, put the handle scales back on, and its good to go. I have six Condor knives. And when I started buying from them, prices where reasonable. But, prices have gone up to the point where I really dont want to buy any of them. Yes, I've used my Savage int he kitchen. Glad to hear you gave your knife some loving attention from the start. I've found that by the time the surface rust on the handle, hiding under the scales, was to be an issue, it would be your great great great grandchildren who would have to deal with it. Every ESEE I've owned has had rust under the scales where the laser etches the date code and removes the black coating. Yes, I do put a dab of WD40 there, but if I didn't, it would never be an issue. I'll try the boiled linseed oil trick next time I come across this issue. Thank you!

The spine on my particular BPS B1 was sharp on one side and rather smooth on the other. The wood handle needed some sanding and sealed. My B1 and Adventure models don't seem to throw much of a spark with the firestarter that came with the Adventure as compared to my LT Wright knife in 3V. The blades on both models were very sharp and great at cutting tasks and came with a great sheath. There are some flaws, but that's expected for the price. Overall, I'm happy with the BPS knives.

Hey KTS, this one cost me money. I bought one of everything BPS makes plus a couple extras of the Adventure knife., the day you posted that video. They’re pretty good knives, there’s some imperfections/blemishes in several of the models I got, by no means does that effect function. Just aesthetics. Great beater knives, really good food prep knives. Lack thickness for batoning but mine have managed to hold up to some hard wood just fine. Edges hold up about the same as a Mora, I can’t tell the difference anyway. Great project knives, I’ve forced patinas on a couple, cold blued a couple and stained scales on all of them. I received 11 knives at once for just under 250 bucks. Gave me a chance to look at consistency of workmanship, there is quite a bit of disparity between a few of them, but for under 40 bucks I can’t fault the knives. Plus just absolutely guilt free when using them hard. Great review on a value knife brand.

Dang!! Everything! You don't fool around. Just with the 1/2 dozen I have I too have noticed some subtle manufacturing issues that are so easily overlooked or tinkered with to make them right. Unlike the glaring QC issues with Condor or even worse yet, Helle. Or, and this one is for the fanboys...Bark River! Can't beat the value of the BPS and I'm finding they hold an edge longer than Mora. Glad you are having fun with them and I hope they provide you with a lifetime of joy!!! Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to leave such an awesome comment. KTS

New knife now available from BPS. I am a DBK fan, bought both knives from DBK so far, the TRC Apocalypse (DBK CONVEXED) and the TRC DBK knife. Now BPS is cashing in on the DBK brand. They have made a copy of the DBK knife (which is pretty much the perfect knife.) Amazon has it for 50 bucks. I ordered one yesterday. It will be here Tuesday. Handles are pinned. Sheath design is different. Figured if you hadn’t heard about it you’d want one. It’s 50 bucks, they did stamp the blade with DBK logo. I think Mickey and Martene get some kick back. Anyways heads up.

I own 4 different model from bps..the only thing I don't like about the bp1 is that the blade dose not go all the way to the handle that empty space drives me nuts.

I am glad that you have so many. I can see where that would be an issue, with the blade only going as far as it does. But other than that I really enjoy them as well!

I'm going to have to go against the grain and state that Mora is still a better bet. The plastic handle and sheath of Mora requires no maintenance and won't crack, puncture, etc. I'm not a Mora fanboy but their knives just work perfectly.

Totally respect that. Truth be known, I do reach for my Mora Companion I shortened (here is the video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGKbgGZ_m698rpo ) more often than just about anything else, other than my ESEE Izula for the tough jobs that require something much more robust.

I've seen these on videos before (including the video you linked to). They do look remarkably.good for the money. I did wonder about fit and finish, but you've answered that question. I'm sure there's one or more in my future... By the way, what's that thing on the wall over your left shoulder? Lol! (Had an intern once who didn't know how to use one of those! Lol! Too funny...) Great video. Thanks.

Thanks for watching. Definitely treat yourself to one of these. You will be more than pleasantly surprised about the fit and finish! And as for that brown thing over my left shoulder, that used to be in my father-in-law‘s basement, and then in my basement and then when we moved we brought it with us and I created a spot for it and it actually functions. 😂

The problem is that they are addictive. I'm on my third one already. Considering Amazon takes a cut out of the price that means they are making even less profit. Everybody is buying these knives. I just got a Esee RB3 and a BPS BS3, hmm, lots of similar letters and numbers there. When you hold them together there's not much difference in quality but there sure is a big difference in price. It's a Mora killer. Wooden handles and leather sheaths .

Well I have extensively used, collected, sold and made knives over many years and I have noticed that many large knife manufacturers have price gouged hobbyists, collectors and bushcrafters for too long. It blows my mind how much money some people are prepared to pay for a bushcraft knife. To a large degree I feel that Bushcrafters and knife enthusiasts have been their own worse enemies and have allowed themselves to be seduced by profiteers. I have knives I have got for nothing and knives I have spent a lot of money on...in the field there is noticeable difference...they get the job done, year in and year out. Of course if you want 'pretty' knives that have more aesthetic value, then pay a few hundred dollars and there are thousands to choose from. Don't say too much about BPS Knives are worth much more or else the prices will be hiked up soon...you watch. Thanks and Best Regards, WS

Great comment. I agree with you. I fear that they are going to see that they have a nice niche in the market and then decide that they could easily double or triple their price and still be less than the big guys prices. My Randall 3-5 cost me $400. It cuts no better than these BPS knives. And, the BPS knives have a better sheath!!!

It is always a good idea to keep a light film of oil on a carbon steel knife and to store it outside of the sheath, preferably in a gun safe with a dehumidifier rod. BreakFree CLP is excellent for rust prevention. I try to avoid washing my carbon steel knives, wiping them with BreakFree CLP instead. Of course, food prep require other maintenance methods.

Finally someone finally saying it. BPS is better than Mora and all other competitors in the price range (maybe some Cold Steel blades are better.) My BPS came with a SIGNIFICANTLY more acute grind than any of my Mora, and like you said consistently sharpened from base to tip. The only thing I can complain about is the handles come very dry and need oil immediately. The leather is unfortunately low quality but the sheath is overall pretty good.
@knifetimestory
@knifetimestory Жыл бұрын
I agree. The finish on their blades is far superior to Mora. I guess I was more BPS rather than slamming Mora. But you are right. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a companion that was sharp but only on 4/5 of the blade.
