The Filipino Ginunting Sword is one of the most devastating swords in the Filipino martial arts arsenal. This modern iteration created by martial artist and knife maker Brian Biegler is a fine example of how effective this sword design is - lightning fast, multi-directional, and exceptionally innovative.

One thing with the Ginunting design that I like is that it is a lite blade that can be carried with modern military gear (hence the reason that it is the official blade of the Philippines Force Recon Marine). The forward curve allows it to be manipulated very fast and bites hard when applied.

I like the design of both. The ginunting looks like it blends the speed of sticks and a bit of power and cutting from swords well. That knife design is also something I've been trying to find. Something with a strong tip, flatter on top without being a tanto but still having a clip point (ish) edge profile. The slight concave portion before the gradual tanto taper is a nice touch too.

Both are very well thought out. You can see the mind at work with these blades.

I enjoyed this very much! Since our last conversation on here I have become more intrigued by the mass attack scenario and hope you will expound on it in the future please!! I know the Atienza guys train this but I your channel provides insight to those of us who can’t travel to training locations.

Nice blade. The modern ginunting blade used by the Philippine Force Recon Marines is designed by Retired 2LT Manuel S Prado Jr, also known as Top Prado. He’s been training and making blades for the Philippine Marines since the early 90s and the PRK group didn’t gain access to the AFP until the early 2000s.

It looks like an amazing piece. I like everything about it except the D-2 steel IF that’s what it is .D-2has great wear resistance so it holds an edge well, it’s high chromium content makes it semi-stainless so it’s low maintenance, but that high er chromium content also makes it more brittle and gives it poor shock resistance. That’s why you rarely see it in long pieces , or things that take a pounding. For instance industrially you might see it used for dies that make shearing cuts but not in presses that stamp things out because the repeated impact would lead to chipping or cracking.

For a long blade I’d rather see it made of something like A-2 (you’d have more rust issues though) or something similar.
