Mark wiley's book says "Dizon was not only a master of the serrada (close) and largo (long) range escrima styles, but was also an adept hilot (healer)" Is it possible to say the serrada style was the decuerdas and the largo possiblely be the Mohara? Did Dizon teach any hilot to your father? Is the Doce pares of Dizon unrelated to the cebu Doce pares style? I heard there was a Doce pares in Luzon

Love the video! Great information! The annotations make it easier to understand. Would your father be willing to do a private interview with you, and you could make a video about his responses? I'm curious about how to travel and sleep with a stick. I think there could still be value in how to carry, conceal, and draw a stick, especially in places where knife or gun isn't allowed or not called for.

Master Estocada, If I had to choose one, I'd go with CPM 3V. It's tougher, holds an edge longer, and requires less maintenance overall compared to SK-5. If you're looking for durability and performance, CPM 3V is superior.

While I agree that there could be a possible targeting of marketing towards the outdoor community with the 3V model, I have the much older Carbon V version of this knife and have used it within the limits of common sense outdoors with regard to fire building. I did NOT baton logs with it. I would not do that with the 3V version either, so I guess its a moot point but that kind of heavy work is what the CSTM, a Himalayan Imports 18 inch Ang Khola , CSGK, or hatchet is for. The Carbon V version performed well. I wasn't really enthusiastic about outdoor use of the Laredo until I watched some of Matthew and Austin Culbertsons' videos on the subject

Really loved this analysis, and I also felt a bit validated: I got a lot of negative and even disparaging comments in my initial review when I complained about the sharp corners on this new model grip (which weren't on the GSM Natchez), but once I de-horned it a bit (and later added some contours) it's become a favorite that really moves for me. And I smiled when you suggested this version may work better for utility use (and it's not bad at all for that), because I had more comments about how this knife isn't designed for such things, only fighting, but then some of those same commenters jumped on my concerns regarding the cable tang (which has held up just fine), arguing that a "fighting knife" like this shouldn't ever be impacting anything but soft tissue. Oh boy.
@RolandoEstocada
@RolandoEstocada Күн бұрын
Thank you brother and I’m glad you feel validated. Having studied Shinkage Ryu, I look at all blades as needing to cut through both hard and soft targets, AND handle impeccably like a custom that integrates with my physical movements. Anything less…regardless of how it cuts, does not meet the Estocada standard. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

I hadn’t thought about the fact the handle designs could be that different, but I think you are correct about the new 3V version targeting the bushcraft community. Like I’ve mentioned before in our previous discussions about the single, or two finger grip concerning machetes in relation to fencing combatives. These new Laredo and Natchez versions feel like a machete grip weapons. It might not be a “happy accident,” but very intentional design considering the targeted demographics. Also…you’re squared off to the opponent. Perhaps switching to a cat stance, or a bladed stance will help out with the flow drills. I’ve tried your squared off approach before, and the knives just don’t flow the same. You’re right about the thrust with the Laredo. I almost never want to practice it, because it feels to weak in the hand.
@RolandoEstocada
@RolandoEstocada Күн бұрын
With my methodology squared up optimizes my bladework. It just so happens that this blade handle is sub optimal. They didn’t make it for a fighter. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
@ArizonaTengu
@ArizonaTengu Күн бұрын
I can’t seem to agree with that sentiment. There is probably more machete fencers than Filipino martial artists for knife combatives. The handle isn’t designed for combat in the sense a machete isn’t meant for combat either. But it appears to be designed for combat in the sense any machete user can quickly transition into handling the knife. Thrusts being the big loss, but thrusting is not a big part of the machete fencing curriculum anyways. There’s also the fact that majority of machete fencers use a bladed stance instead of a squared stance. IMHO, this seems to be an attempt to drive the market by appealing to the bushcrafting demographics. Where western or Latin American martial artists could also take advantage of the design.
@RolandoEstocada
@RolandoEstocada Күн бұрын
@@ArizonaTengu it’s ok different opinions are good. It is possible to fight with this Laredo. It isn’t optimal for high repetition work using the Keating/Bagwell paradigm.
@ArizonaTengu
@ArizonaTengu Күн бұрын
@RolandoEstocada Now that I definitely can agree with, but I don’t know the Keating/Bagwell methodology. So the loss just isn’t being felt by me. Unfortunately, as influential as Bill Bagwell was? Ultimately that segment of the martial arts community lost the historical culture war. Where we see weapon design moving heavily towards a more utilitarian approach of machetes, bushcraft/tactical knives, and tomahawks.

@ramonlijauco7563
@ramonlijauco7563 Күн бұрын
When I was a young boy, it was said ( and practiced) that the first movement that mattered was 1) draw the closed balisong from your pocket. 2) Unlatch the catch with your little finger 3) flip the knife open in the easiest traditional opening and 3) thrust the knife directly into the opponent.

In the movie 🍿🎥 like you referred to the ( last of the Mohicans ) noticing that when your gun shot was expended concerning flint lock muskets , the natural combat stance was tomahawk and bowie knife 🗡️ with the Bowie facing backwards, to grab , hook , with the tomahawk pulling in a opponent in range of the Bowie knife for a bowie strike , or hooking the musket barrel moving it away for a Bowie strike ...It seems that the two were used in combination the tomahawk and bowie - not only very interesting but very kool , you see it also in the movie ( the Patriot ) with mel Gibson , it obviously was a combat combo with merit , once your gun was fired - maybe even considered the primary weapons one or the other or both together? And the same with indigenous people after the bow 🏹 , similar to the musket -; tomahawk and Bowie.. ( close quarters ) option .

It is the most difficult to master and to teach. With most double weapons systems they at least resemble each other. The Bowie and the tomahawk are so different from each other it is as if you’re playing tennis and shooting a handgun at the same time.

As a frontier knife 🗡️ cutting and butchering huge animals on multiple rugged environments, mountains , woodlands , swamps , deserts , So in those environments they are practical carrying for hunting, and combat came to be the second realized advantages of the Bowie blade derivatives and versions. A frontier blade , covers all those needs pretty well , main reason is blade length and reaching the vital organs in combat , same reasons it was in butchering and hunting needs cleaning game .
