The thing about the built-in balconies (gallarija) doesn't have anything to do with the Muslims, the area of Valletta was an unbuilt promontory until the Knights arrived and built the new town of Valletta, there were no Muslims in Malta for hundreds of years, having been deported to Lucera, Puglia in the 13th century. Lots of people in Valletta at this time of year heading towards winter. I'm Australian but I was born in Malta at Lija, Malta has changed quite a lot, the apartment blocks, the traffic and the noise. I don't speak Maltese, but the Maltese writing in the thumbnail means the time of Christ's birth, Christmas, and a good year, I guess a happy New Year.
