@@SteveReevesHercules One reason those bodybuilders disappeared is because in those days you couldn't make a living as a bodybuilder. No sponsorships which meant that they had to do other things to support themselves.

That's Doug Hepburn. At the time, Doug was the strongest squatter and presser. The smaller man is Bill Kelso - Pacific Coast Middle Weight Champ. From Wikipedia Douglas Ivan Hepburn (September 16, 1926 - November 22, 2000) was a Canadian strongman and weightlifter. He won weightlifting gold medals in the 1953 World Weightlifting Championships as well as the 1954 British Empire Games in the heavyweight division. He is also known as the first man to bench press 400, 450, and 500 pounds (raw). During the 1950s he was publicly known as the "world's strongest man" for his many feats of strength. Hepburn has been inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame (1953), Canada's Sports Hall of Fame (1955), and the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame (1966). Height 5'8 1/2" Weight 300lbs Born September 16, 1916 Died November 22, 2000 (74)

steroids were first used ..that can be proved....in the early 50's.....but..i dont know if anyone can say with certainty who was talking them.....

A good way of distinguishing, is that the stars mentioned here, were in great condition all year round. Reg (who was one of the biggest) said he always stayed in 80 % top shape, so he could do guest appearances with a few weeks notice. Compare that with the off season "beached whale" condition of the top competitors today, to say nothing of their post competative standards...Arnold being a good example. Compare him with his training partner, vegetarian Jim Morris at 50, 60 and 70. and when they trained together.

The silver era of bodybuilding. Very few if any anabolic steroids were used. Today's scene is a fcking mess.

Major mess. Bodybuilding today is a disgrace. I take my inspiration from the 40s and 50s and always will. Aesthetically it was the best.
