@@LeilaGharani is it? you only showed values pulls, you did not do pulls on text data, or any other formats. if you are really claiming this is a shortcut for index match, then do a pull based on General Ledger activity for the Balance Sheet balances so that they tie to financial statements. If it will work, then you can say that it is indeed a shortcut.

@@ISqueezeMyTomatoes It is a shortcut, or rather it is a short cut in the English language meaning of the word. I work in IT and I use Excel when I need to obtain accurate information fast! As much as I love the INDEX and MATCH combo, XLOOKUP will save me time and, I strongly believe it will help my colleagues who do not use Excel as often but they too need accurate information, fast. They're Excel training was based on likes of VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP from years ago. Leila taught me the benefits of INDEX and MATCH, but my colleagues stubbornly stick to VLOOKUP because that's what they were taught and are too afraid of change given the importance of the work we do. I cannot see how my colleagues will not see the benefits of XLOOKUP. And, I cannot wait to use it when it becomes available to me.

@@robpickles3736 well, that explains it. if you work in IT then you definitely will be using it as a shortcut, oh, my bad, as a "short cut". you mentioned IT, networking? analytics? security? MIS/DBA? if you mentioned index/match, something tells me you work with data, then you better stick to vlookup, it will not make much of a difference for you. However, the XLOOKUP function might save time for you if you use a lot of arrays, but will it save time to other advanced users that relate on dynamic accurate financial data and complex financial analysis? and yes, I absolutely agree with your point, XLOOKUP will definitely change people lives. Question is, will it be capable to replace Index/Match? BTW, i do not work in IT, i work with IT tools.

Index/Match is super easy. 1st arg, array that holds the answer and related columns 2nd arg, match function (lookup value, array that holds the answer, false for exact match). The match pulls the row number to reference. 3rd arg, column # within 1st arg array where you will find the answer.

I just had to come back here to thank you again for this excellent tutorial. I am using Xlookup more and more. I haven’t used V look up for about four months now. I think it can replace index and match as well. I used it recently nested in an IF statement. I was basically using it to produce 3 different outcomes. The IF variable drove which area to point the Xlookup. There were three different Xlookup‘s within my IF statement. And that is why I think it could replace index and match. THANK YOU!!!!

Great! I finally got a chance to look at this function as it is now available for all MS 365 users. The officially released XLOOKUP function is even a bit better than we can see in Leila's great video. It contains another parameter [if_not_found] which is not mandatory and might be good for dealing with #N/A errors without any other IFERROR or IFNA functions. Another fine feature I noticed is that I can use lookup_value as array too and it works. I still need more practice for all of it to sink in but I can see it is a very promising function. Maybe one thing I would like to see in some future versions of this function, would be a parameter for k-th match.

well... I think VLOOKUP will be around for quite a while. XLOOKUP is one of the cool functions/features in modern Excel. But we all know, most users are not aware of most of the cool stuff in Excel. Excel Table was introduced in Excel 2007. Yes, that's a decade ago... but the fact is MANY people has no idea what an Excel Table is as of today. Power Query is another example.... But don't take me wrong. I think the XLOOKUP is super COOL! :)

I always used Index/Match, until I got annoyed by having to switch between sheets/workbooks to select all the data needed. That's why I added the function below to an add-in about a year ago. Looks a lot like the Xlookup function I see now ..
