To this day it still makes me sad and angry that Brian went through this abuse in the 70s that ultimately lost his voice and focus. He was the big cog that was missing.

They weren’t all in their early 20s and they weren’t kids. In fact, the only person in their early 20s was Dennis Wilson. On February 15, 1966, Mike was 24, Brian was 23, Al was 23, Dennis was 21, and Carl was 19. Also, every single Beach Boy was married at that time, with Carl Wilson marrying his wife just twelve days prior on February 3. Mike was already a father of three at the time of the photo shoot. The median age of the band was 23 at the time. By that age, most people are out of college and have full time jobs.

Agreed, considered the same thing before reading your addition. Derek Taylor was hired for the BB's to "legit" them out of the car-and-surf thing, so this was his "The band says F The Man!" effort. Cartoonish writing; reads like a rant from an 11th grade female jabbering with her pals about some dudes she hangs out with.

Bruce was standing next to the photographer for most of the shoot because he was still officially under contract to Columbia Records, and wasn't allowed to appear on the front cover (he did appear on the back cover in Japanese costume). The booklet for the 2001 CD release of the album contains a couple of photos of Bruce, looking less than thrilled to be surrounded by hungry goats.

That nine months assertion is a bit of an exaggeration. "Sloop John B" and "Pet Sounds" were in the can by the end of 1965 -- recorded a few dates in July, November, and December. The entire SPAN of the sessions was from July through April, which is indeed nine months. But there were months in between when *nothing* was done for the Pet Sounds album (and the aforementioned tracks were both finished before an album was even considered). In fact, the Beach Boys recorded an entire album in September. So it's not like Brain & Co. were toiling for nine straight months. That'd be like saying it took The Beatles 14 months to record the Let It Be album.

Anyone who would interview Mike Love about Pet Sounds - anything about Pet Sounds - knows nothing about Brian Wilson's genius. If Brian wasn't available to talk, you could have looked up Al Jardine...just someone who didn't [a] fight and trash the album who is now [b] claiming that he was the driving force behind it. You blew it, KFMB.

Jeff interviewed Mike Love shortly after I found the film back in October. The interview was for The Beach Boys Concert at The Del Mar Fairgrounds. So naturally he asked him about the shoot. Every effort was made to interview Brian and sadly, it didn't happen. Still not giving up and hope we can interview him in the future.

I have met all of the living Beach Boys multiple times. Mike, Bruce, and David Marks are great with the fans. They sign autographs, take pictures, have conversations. Al will reluctantly do all of the above-if you corner him, but you can tell he would rather be elsewhere. Brian is by far the worst. He will not even acknowledge your presence. Granted, he is usually in his zombie like state, being led around by his handlers. But I have been with him when only 2 other people were near him and he wouldn't even look at us. That is not being shy-just rude. Maybe back in the 1960s he was the brains of the group, but once he fried his brains-Mike and the rest of the band kept it going. They would have dissolved early like the Beatles. Their would have been no Beach Boys in the last 45-50 years if it had not been for Mike and Carl.

My one experience with Al seems to bear out what you're saying. It was at a record shop in Hollywood (remember those), when the group was promoting their "L.A. Light" album. I had brought a recently-released book on the group with me ..."The Beach Boys and the California Myth." As I was in line and got next to Al, I held the book up for Al to sign. He hesitated for a moment, and then signed his signature with my felt pen on the cover of the book. I thought he was going to sign it on the inside. I didn't argue about it. The last thing I would want would be to have an argument with any of them. After the event, in the parking lot, I was able to have Mike sign the book (he was quite courteous), as well as Audrey Wilson! It was only later that I found out that that book was not an authorized book, and Mike apparently had some issues with the author. I didn't know it at the time, or I would have never brought the book. I thought that was the reason Al hesitated to sign the book. A LONG way of explaining that I had the same experience as you with Al. A LO

@@chrisfreeman9960 Yeah, Al is a little weird when it comes to fans, etc. I have seen him after he did some solo concerts in the early 2000s. He had a table set up signing stuff and selling shirts, cd's, etc. Even when people were buying his stuff, you could tell he didn't want to sign it. strange. Even though Mike gets a bad rap from a lot of Beach Boys fans-he is by far the best with its fans. At least the times I have encountered him. Plus his version of the band is far better than Brian's in my opinion. they play great song after great song the whole way through. . Brian spends a lot of his concert playing his solo stuff and new music, then for the last 30-45 minutes plays the songs that people go there for.
@chrisfreeman99603 жыл бұрын
@@johnflynn2131 So how was your experience seeing Al in concert? I had wanted to see him perform, but never got around to it. And now I believe he's not performing solo, although I could be wrong. From what I remember reading about his solo performances, he does quite a few album cuts from the Beach Boys album's. And, of course, he has to do "Help Me, Rhonda". Well, that, and the other hit he sang lead on, "Sloop John B", the song he suggested to Brian. Too bad he couldn't put himself a little more out there, after his shows, to people who came to see him perform. Since, going solo, he would not have the same crowd draw as Brian, or Mike with his Beach Boys. Yea, again, it was a little weird, in the record store, handing the book to Al...and just assuming he would open it up, and sign a page inside the book. Instead, he hesitated, and then just wrote "Al" in large letters in felt pen on the cover of the book. Surprising...but I wasn't going to make an issue of it. I've seen Brian quite a few times in concert. At some point, I think I will see Mike Love's show.

2:36. To Dan Del Fiorentino: Your facts are incorrect. Brian made the album in 4 months (not 9 as you state). He recorded the album proper, JAN-APR 1966. Also, it's Bruce "Johnston" not "Johnson" as you stated. As a so-called music historian, you should learn the basic facts before you go off to all and sundry as some sort of pinheaded authority.
