Technically, they did the same with Enhancement. Of the Major Bad Guys, the ones that got the most fight time were Enhancers, with the exception of Hisoka. Uvogin & Meruem *Edit:* There is an argument to be made that Meruem is a Specialist but his Chimera Ant Biology makes that less likely. Only the Queen can pass consumed genetics to further generations. However, the King can produce a Queen through mating with a different species, so he must have these genetics as well. The other Chimera Ants can only breed, they can't create breeders.

@@AmManTalks read my comment, it is likely that Meruem was not a Specialist and that his ability of Aura Synthesis was a result of him being the King and having the same genetics that allow the Queen to pass on traits of what she devours to the next generation. The King is biologically different from the other Chimera Ants, with him being the only one capable of making another Queen, by breeding with the female of another species, the rest will just create normal offspring.

I for one believe he was due to his base ability being aura synthesis. He was able to eat other nen users and add their aura onto his own. None of the other categories of nen allow this, therefore he's a specialist. Sure his aura synthesis could have been simply due to genetics, but it's a nen ability nonetheless. Much like how Neferpitous en was inherently irregular, taking on the shape of tendrils rather than the typical aura sphere. Pray tell why do you specifically believe Meruem wasn't a specialist, and if not what class did he fall into nen wise?

I really do adore the characters of the Succession War arc. Beyond, Tserriednic, Hawkingburgh, the Kakyn King, rest of the princes, etc. Even characters we know of are the most interesting they've ever been like the Phantom Troupe, Hisoka, Kurapika, Ging and Pariston. Togashi to me really just makes this series better and better as time goes on and for me this is shaping up to be my favorite arc in the series yet. Also I say Beyond is a specialist. Without a doubt I'd even go as far to say.

Maybe Beyond Netero is an Enhancer that evolved into a Specialist ? We know that Specialist is different from all others category, since only a Specialist can use Specialist capacity , but it is still on the Aura Wheel because an individual Nen Affinity can change . It’s uncommon, even for a Manipulator or Conjurer who are the most compatible to Specialist Affinity, but not impossible. Maybe he was an Enhancer before going to the Dark Continent the first time, but his journey there changed him to the core, making him a Specialist after that.

That’s not likely if not impossible. Togashi went out of his way to highlight the affinity compatibility of the nen chart. Enhancers have a 0% affinity with the specialist. While specialist have 40% with enhancer. Conjurer and manipulator both holding 1% toward becoming a specialist. Kurapika for example being part of that 1%. Also it’s really doubtful conjurers have a higher possibility than the manipulator at being a specialist.

Changing affinity is different than using another type in a hatsu. Conjurers and manipulators are kinda shafted because no one can dip into specialisation without the outright affinity.

That was my thoughts exactly, becoming a specialist requires special circumstances like the Kurta clan's eyes, or can happen naturally lkke with Chrollo. Beyond very definitely can easily fall into the special circumstances catagory with his trip to the Dark Continent. Could be something as simple as getting inhabited by another creature, like with Nanika, or a side effect of the food like with the immortality rice. The Dark Continent is such a huge unknown that Togashi could say it's that and it would still make sense.

I feel like Beyond is an Enchanter. He screams like one, is the son of Netero, respected his vow to not go into the dark continent for half a century (feels like only an Enchantment is guaranteed to keep his words to this extend), he gives the same impression as Netero (according to the zodiacs) when he's talking, and it's the best fit for a fighter. Although they are mostly sincere, it's not like it's forbidden for Enchanters to lie or keep secrets, Gon did it a number of times, Netero was full of mystery, Wing had secrets regarding Nen at the beginning, Ubogin kept his mouth when dealing with Kurapika, Menthuthuyoupi also tricked his opponents by faking his rage, Palm tried to trick Kurapika at the orders of the ants, so basically all known Enchanters had lied or tricked somebody at some point. If something, I'll see Enchanters are more than likely to lie if that helps them achieve their goals or protect their friends. Is a difference between being naive or plain dumb, and being inclined to be sincere, the real difference is that the Transmutors lie for the fun of it, not when it's needed.

@@LiquifiedSoul why? He's 100% right. It was the fans that made Togashi rich. He definitely has a responsibility to them if even a little. His back problems aren't an excuse for his laziness. Togashi apologists seem to not understand that. As an artist myself and a pianist with 2 herniated disc's in my l4-l5 and l5-s1 and an anular tear in my l5-s1 I understand his suffering but I still manage with only working 4 hour shifts serving tables and handfuls of Gabapentin medication. But it's still no excuse for Togashi. He literally does NOTHING. Its not like he has ALS or cerebral palsy. For myself, I can only draw or play piano for 30 minutes at a time because of the back pain. But if I take long breaks I can do multiple sessions of 30 minutes. Now keep in mind that if Togashi ONLY spent 10 MINUTES A DAY (which he can do WAY more if he wanted) he would have finished Hunter X Hunter a decade ago. But the fact of the matter is that he just doesn't want to. He's lazy and/or just dgaf. Same goes for George RR Martin of A Song Of Ice and Fire. If George only wrote a single paragraph a day, he'd have finished Winds of Winter YEARS AGO. And keep in mind George used to write hundreds of pages a month before he made his retirement money just like Togashi. You can see this with Naoki Urasawa who has been constantly been producing masterpiece after masterpiece while SUFFERING FROM CHRONIC BACK PAIN since the mid 90s, with Monster, 20th Century Boys and Pluto... all of which are better than HxH by the way. The truth is that if Togashi suddenly went broke, you can bet your ass we would see new Hunter X Hunter volumes every single month. And that's a fact.

@@nenmaster5218 Nen is not necessarily pro or against self betterment. It's a power system that utilizes your psychology, yes. That doesn't mean that it has to have a positive or negative effect on it. As for your question, it is an interesting one. Firstly, the cat rule would definately strengthen your nen, even if you are not afraid of cats because it is still a condition that needs to be fulfilled before using your abilities and it's not like it's the easiest condition you could have made. It definately would not make your nen weaker just because you're not afraid of them anymore. Secondly, you can always alter your conditions, limitations and pledges later on, should you change your mind on sth (for example: you may make your ability now require you to hold a cat the whole time while you use it or add another condition / limitation if you don't think it's powerful enough anymore).

Beyond Netero is an Enhancer. *Evidence:* Monkey Zodiac is confident in his ability to incapacitate Beyond. Enhancers are most vulnerable to Conjurers and Manipulators. Beyond Netero kept his promise to his father and is straight forward in his ambitions, showing an honest streak. Most Enhancers are overly muscular, with a few exceptions. *Theory:* Beyond Netero is stronger than his father and his father used the natural high Aura Output of the Enhancer Type to create his powerful Hatsu. I would assume that Beyond Netero's Aura Output will make his Hatsu more powerful than one would normally expect. *Argument:* Beyond Netero is not a Specialist. We see a few specialists in the series and all of them, with the exception of Kurapika, who is a special case, have low Aura Output. *Edit:* Of the people who ventured to the Dark Continent, all of them that survived were exceedingly powerful. It would be safe to assume that the survivors had a high Aura Output, which would discredit the Specialist theory, as they have one of the lowest. The further away from the Enhancer Affinity of Nen, the more the Nen User will use tactics and planning to win, over brute strength. However, Brute Strength gives you the highest possibility of survival in an unknown scenario, like the Dark Continent. *Example:* Chrollo Lucilfer took a ton of physical damage in his fight with Hisoka. This would be due to the distance of Specialist from Enhancement. Also, Chrollo carries a poisoned Ben's Knife with him, in case he gets too overwhelmed physically to shuffle through his abilities.

But the Hisoka test is based on personality and not personal ambition, also he has not been straightforward at all in his ambitions, he hasn't stated exactly what he wanted and he often is scheming, very unlike an Enhancer. Also most Emitters and Transmuters are also overly muscular with few exceptions.

The healer in many cases is the weakest in both offense and defense but his/her role and abilities are vital Beyond said the group he gathered have specific abilities he scouted to take on certain challenges in the DC. It doesnt mean each member is on the level of Hisoka or something. I do agree with you on Chrollo. While he isnt physically so weak, he didnt choose to engage in Hisoka in a straight up braw like an enhancer would because one solid blow will kill him (Hisoka is both 80% in enhancement and physically strong on his own already) When Hisoka bungee gum the clone and slammed him to the floor, Hisoka assumed it was over and given the damage of the clone and Hisoka not realizing it until the clone apperance ceased, that was definitely what would be happened if that was the real Chrollo Chrollo is very strong due to his experience, natual talent, strong aura, and mental fortitude as well as intelligence and planning Despite all that, he isn’t surviving a punch from Uvo or the one Gon showed against Morel unless he dodges or uses a Hatsu to defend.

NOw compare them to the amount of other nen types Now here is a list of non specialist villains vs your small list: Hisoka Uvo Genthru All of the Troupe except for Chrollo and Pakunoda All the ants except Pitou, Leol and Meruem There is a reason specialist are rare and given Hisoka personality test, many tend to be charismatic leaders or people in high positions of power

This video has made me realize that, despite how rare they seem to treat it, there are WAY more specialists in this story than expected. I guess it makes sense for narrative purposes to have higher ranking baddies be very particular with their powers, but it almost makes the idea of a “specialist” feel less special. I think that’s why Greed Island is so interesting. You get to see most of the other 5 principle types demonstrated with a lot of variety and flair. There is also the interesting build that Feitan has, where his physical prowess is very admirable, while his Transmuter ability is better served toward closing out a prolonged encounter. I don’t know, I guess my head is in this weird spot where the mystique of Specialists feels more underwhelming, because we as the audience can now expect some kind of super unpredictable and potentially broken power that even the most talented of Ben masters would find it difficult to adapt to. That or their power is added to the growing list of people who either steal or perfectly mimic other powers.
