That's exactly what I was thinking. They were such babies when they started. Which speaks to their skill and talent even then, but presenting themselves in a more mature way with their songs was a learned skill that they were still in the process of doing at this point. I feel like a proud parent 😂 During debut era most adlibs are Jonghyun because he’s the main vocalist. I believe both Onew and Key debuted as lead vocalists, but I only caught the occasional Onew adlib. Perhaps this is because Key is also lead rapper. What I’ve learned about traditional vocal positions is that the lead vocalists are usually the ones who start the song, while main vocalists sing more on choruses and are saved for difficult vocal parts plus adlibs. Minho has never been allowed to forget the rap on The SHINee world 🤣

Agree. This is only a few months, like 2, 3 months(love like oxygen) ,5,6 months after their debut. They just starting to get comfortable.. And with tech and fans back then, they don't get exposure much.. Groups nowadays are so lucky, at the same time, too many groups debuting. 😂😅 Back then Not many groups debut. And they only depend on themselves, promoting their singles to fans.. I still remember. They promote Replay to fans while giving sweets.. Its so cute.. SHINee is so great in the present . Because of mmbers efforts themselves. Not because of company etc. Hehe ☺️

LOVED THISSSS i've missed your SHINee reactions so much, and i'm glad you're starting from 2008 :) as you can tell, the live performances back in the day were really different from how we're used to now - a lot more raw and authentic with little backing track. and they're just killing it on their debut stage with the vocals and dancing. it's just mindblowing, till this day. i don't think any newly debuted group nowadays can pull something like this off anymore.

SHINee performed Love Like Oxygen again in 2015.. and you would really see the result of experience with the 2015 version. So so good! They were already good during debut but they just kept getting better it’s insane.

SHINee's nicknames come from the rap section in their "The SHINee World (Doo-Bop)," which is commonly referred to as Minho's Dibidibidis rap. In the rap Minho says: (Dibidibidis) Bling Bling is Jonghyun (Dibidibidis) our powerful Taemin (Dibidibidis) the only tofu is Onew (Dibidibidis) SHINee’s Almighty and All-knowing, Key (Dibidibidis) The charismatic flame, Minho (i.e. Flaming Charisma). Lee Jinki was given the stage name Onew because of his soft and gentle personality. Onew is a combination of the Korean characters that mean or sound like soft and gentle, which in the rap they compare to tofu. So, Onew's nickname has become "the tofu leader" or "our tofu leader". Jonghyun is "Bling Bling Jonghyun" because they say he has always sparkled with talent. Key is "the almighty Key" who opens all the doors in the industry. Taemin is "Powerful Taemin." And Minho is "Flaming Charisma Minho," which comes from the fact that he is super passionate about everything he does and he has a need to always win, he won't quit until he is the winner. :D And just so you know, this was one of Minho's very first raps, and it was one of the only raps that was NOT wrote by him. The rap was wrote by one of their managers and SM thought it was funny so they added it to the song. But Minho and the other members always thought the rap was super embarrassing, and up until a few years ago -- after performing it several times during their early years -- they refused to ever perform it again. However, in the last few years, Minho has said he is starting to see its charm and he finds it kind of nostalgic, so whenever someone asks him to perform it he doesn't find it quite as cringgy anymore. The lyrics "Noona, you’re so pretty" is referring to SHINee's debut song "Replay," that is why they say, "With this song I immediately Start." And the line, "Again, with you’re like oxygen," is referencing their song "Love Like Oxygen," which is the second track on their The SHINee World album.

So you start with Replay fetus version. Hahaha. TaeMin’s moves were big at that time. He of course has improved tremendously but you’ll see that they’re talented already. In Love Like Oxygen you will see how JongHyun really plays with his voice in singing. The harmonies can be heard already. I get what you mean. Maybe they’re trying to flex their voices. I suddenly looked at the English translation of the lyrics. HAHAHA. Love is agony and they can’t breath, tired, fatigued without her. Felt like they were abandoned so Love is like oxygen. Now that I am listening to Amigo again, this song sounds like K Pop. Imagine at that time the song sounded like that already. It can be released this year and it would still be okay. Well according to the lyrics they don’t know who she is and they didn’t get her in the end. She was ice as cold. Doo-Bop has those famous rap lyrics of MinHo. Hahahaha. He doesn’t like to do that anymore. He feels embarrassed. Why don’t you include Japanese songs specially those that they performed during concerts.

That Doo Bop performance was from their comeback stage for a music show as an intro to Love Like Oxygen hence their outfits (since oftentimes artists perform a bside first prior to their title track in shows). Great idea to take this journey. I'm with you all the way. It is interesting to watch performers develop, especially when they start so young. It always takes a group some time to find their rhythm. I rewatched some of the old Friends episodes recently. Some of the eps were painful to see, but you have to appreciate the effort these performers put in. The road to be at the top of their game is a long hard fought battle. Sometimes we forget that when all we see is their brilliance.

As others have probably mentioned, although, "Amigo" sounds like the Spanish word for friend, in Korean A.Mi.Go was/is a well known acronym for the Korean phrase that means, something like: "You will suffer on your way to falling in love with a beauty." So, the story is about how the girl stole Minho's heart. She took his heart and left him with the note that is hanging around his neck. She has unfrozen him with her touch and put color back into the world. However, as the song says, "Cold heart, baby ... Cold eyes, baby." They are saying they have fallen for her, but as "the ice princess," she is always unavailable and just out of arm's reach. But they can't help falling for her anyway. That is why Minho is chasing after her. If you notice, she is always one step ahead of him. He can never catch her no matter how hard he tires. That is why she is the "Ice princess." she is sexy and intoxicating, but she is always playing hard to get. The MV is literally depicting every word of the song. As the English translation of the lyrics say: "go, I run, ... Challenges are always fun, ... But the world isn’t as easy as it seems. ... I lose my mind when I see her, ... I'm unable to grasp her by this hand," etc. The story in the MV makes a lot more sense when you combine it with the lyrics. On a side note: Minho is the visual of the group who is known for his natural model good looks. His nickname is Flaming Charisma and he is also known for being super athletic and competitive, so that is why he is the member who is chasing the girl. In real life Minho doesn't stop until he wins and he hates to lose. He is good at almost every sport so he very rarely loses. :D But even he is no match for the "ice princess." Minho also has the deepest voice, so SM made him the group's main rapper, and Key is the lead rapper. (Key is also fluent in English, so you might notice that his rap style sounds a little more western.) But, because SM originally wanted to make SHINee a hip-hop group, they were all trained in rapping. Now, SHINee have become known as one of the top groups that all can do it all. They are a group of 5 amazing vocalists, 5 impressive dancers, 5 visuals, 5 rappers, 5 top actors, and 5 of the most talented and unique voices in all of Kpop. They are one of the most well rounded groups in the industry. When it comes to SHINee the vocalists can rap and the rappers can sing. They are such a versatile group that on the rare occasion when one of the members is unable to participate in a performance because they were injured or busy, any of the other members could potentially be tapped to fill in for them -- all the members can cover all the parts of their songs. As you should know by now, as SM's experimental boy group, everything they do is meant to be the first and they are expected to set the trend. With every new song SHINee produces it's expected to be different than the last, so you will never hear the same style or sound from SHINee in any of their songs. The industry looks to SHINee to show them what the next song style and dance trend will be. And it is said that within 3 months of SHINee releasing their new song and choreography, you will see that same sound and style being duplicated across the industry with every comeback to follow from both boy groups and girl groups. When SHINee does something the industry takes note and follows suit. SHINee has started the trend with almost everything from songs to dances to clothing, to live performances, to the way Kpop is promoted, there is almost nothing that can't be attributed to something SHINee has been involved in. Next to R&B, I think Rock is SHINee's next best genre of music and they often do rock style remixes of their songs at their concerts. Since Replay mv I always felt that Jonghyun was the most natural followed by Key. Jjongs performance style was always aggressive depending on the type of song. That never really changed throughout his career.

I think for me Key has always put it all out there and always seemed the most natural in performing. The rest of SHINee were so shy at times that they had to try to pull off confidence and it's understandable given their age. I think that's why I partly gravitated to Key as my bias back in the day. Then again Key going solo in the beginning was a little nervous too on stage. Then again anything new is nerve wrecking, but they all are confident performers now and have come a long way to be the legends they are now. To be so young and do what they did at their age is amazing. Most kids wouldn't be so serious and professional as they were at that age.

Key has been banging down SM's door from day 1. I'm so glad they finally saw him live in the 3rd audition and selected him. The talent and dream he knew he had to pursue. But its also another reason why he used to feel like he's the chicken among swans. The others were pretty much shoo ins. The 'worst' was Minho as even though it wasn't ever an interest, his brother and him were chased by the talent scout noona and pretty much begged to go into SM. Key used to give Minho such a hard time over it too... but later softened when he finally acknowledged how hard Minho worked to catch up with everyone and how he truly lived up to his quote "miracle is another word for hard work."

Key wanting to be acknowledged as a singer is now being acknowledged as 1 is crazy how he was seen as a comedian rather than a singer eventhough it was how he started his career. Hearing his chicken story is sad. I know yes he accepts his shortcomings, but to think he isn't at the level of his teammates is sad to me. I wonder if he still sees himself as a chicken.

These are both songs from their second Mini album "ROMEO", so that would be the right order anyway :P After that, there´s their 3rd Mini album "2009, Year of us" with the classics Ring Ding Dong and JoJo (no MV so better live version). I think these would be the most important tracks for the next segment? Before starting with Lucifer era :D

You should check out their Love Like Oxygen stage at mnet from 2015, to see their growth after 7years. It holds a special place in my heart because idols before 2nd gen generally don’t last over 5~7 years. There’s this “7 year curse” in the kpop industry where a group’s contracts usually ends and they disband or some members leave and etc. So SHINee getting to the 7-year mark, happily and still going strong was a huge deal.

10:15 yes, that is Taemin's voice 10:48 that would be Jonghyun doing scales I highly suggest you to watch the Love Like Oxygen live stage from 2015 on M!Countdown. They said that they performed the track 100% live (no backtrack, nothing) because their voices had changed so much from when they recorded the song for the album back in 2008 that it no longer matched their voices so they couldn't use it 😂

The Korean version of "Love Like Oxygen" was released as the lead promotional track on SHINee's first full length album The SHINee World in August 2008. (Promoted alongside "Amigo" which was the lead track on their repackaged album.) It was their first release after their debut single "Replay" in May 2008. Fun fact: They also released a Japanese version of "Love Like Oxygen" in 2011 as part of the group's Japanese debut. Taemin had just turned 15 years old right before this MV was released. SHINee's level of professionalism and maturity was there from the very beginning -- there were only 2 or 3 months between "Replay" and "Love like Oxygen." :D It's just SHINee's style, they are constantly switching up the feel and vibe with every song you hear from them. As you noticed, Taemin doesn't really sing in the song, which is why you heard him with the intense growl instead. They covered for his weak vocals by giving him that spoken growl part instead. In SHINee's early days Taemin didn't have a whole lot of lines in their songs. As you may know, people even used to make fun of Taemin's singing and they would say that he was tone deaf and couldn't sing. However, it's sort of a misconception that Taemin "couldn't sing." it wasn't that he couldn't sing, it was just that he debuted when he was so young -- he was only 14 years old -- that his voice hadn't really developed yet and he didn't really have a good grasp of how to use his voice and produce the sounds he wanted with it. So, in the beginning, when he sang he was often flat or his voice cracked or he was off key or out of tune, etc. And because he was being compared to the other members of SHINee who are all 2 to 4 years older than him, and the other members had such phenomenal voices to start out with, it really made Taemin sound like he was lacking. That's why in these first few songs you will see that he only has a few lines, and most of the time he was just given big solo dance breaks to fill the stage at his parts in the song. However, if he was really tone deaf he never would have become an SM Idol trainee -- SM would have put him on the dance track and probably steered him toward becoming a backup dancer -- and he definitely would have never become the amazing singer that he is today. Someone who is truly tone deaf is physically unable to hear the difference in the notes and is unable to carry a tune. But Taemin really wanted to prove to everyone that he wasn't just a dancer, so he spent a lot of extra time concentrating on vocal lessons and the other SHINee members -- especially Onew and Jonghyun -- spent some serious time coaching and mentoring him until he learned what it took to match their vocal range and to use his voice. If you notice, Taemin's style of singing, especially in SHINee songs, is a lot like Jonghyun. And as you are starting to discover, Taemin fills in for Jonghyun whenever Jonghyun was unable to participate in a performance. And even today, Taemin often takes over the high notes and the parts that I think would probably have been Jonghyun's parts in their new songs -- he has now become one of SHINee's main vocalists. Jonghyun was the one that really took Taemin under his wing and helped him to become the singer that he is today. So, many think that Taemin's voice emulates Jonghyun because he is the one that taught Taemin to sing. Jonghyun has always been Taemin's biggest supporter and the one that rooted for him the hardest and loudest out of anyone. Jonghyun is famous for that MJ growl and vocal cry that you heard in this song. And it's Jonghyun's vocals that pretty much shapes SHINee's style and sound. The one you hear with the high notes, long notes and adlibs in SHINee's songs most of the time is Jonghyun. To sum up exactly what SHINee's style is: they are vocal powerhouses that create universally popular pop songs. :D When it comes to SHINee you can't expect anything except that it will be uniquely SHINee and probably one of the best songs and performances you will ever experience. Every song that SHINee has ever released is unlike any other and it won't sound or look like anything you have ever seen from them, including the songs on the same album. That's why they have such a big influence on the music industry, even from day one. As you know, SHINee's whole concept since debut is they are supposed to be SM's experimental boy group, so they are constantly making and setting trends. And songs like "Love Like Oxygen" are a good example of that. Some of the trends SHINee has started: -- They are one of the first groups to start the trend of skinny colored jeans and form-fitting outfits that showed off their athletic psychics for male idols. Before SHINee, the trend was hip-hop style with baggy clothing that was 3 times too big. (SHINee started the boyfriend/student look.) Their fashion trends have been given the name "SHINee Trend." -- They were one of the first groups to have sharp precise synchronized dance moves and to show the world that they could sing live while performing complex choreography and sound flawless. Because of SHINee, everyone upped their standard when it comes to live performances and choreography. -- They were the very first group to release a dance practice video specifically so fans could see the full dance, and they were the first to have a dance practice video become a trending video online. They are the reason why dance practice videos are a thing today. -- Jonghyun was one of the first IDOLS to be recognized as a singer/songwriter, and to produce songs for not only himself and his group, but for other artists as well. Jonghyun was highly respected within the industry for his songwriting and composing skills and he was considered one of the most prolific artists of his generation. About 40% of SHINee's songs were wrote by him, as well as all of his own solo songs and several songs for other artists, such as EXO, Taemin, IU, Lee HI, etc. -- And SHINee pretty much starts almost every trend in the music industry when it comes to the sound and style of their music. And every song they release is expected to be something that has never been seen or heard before. Not only is it expected to be something they have never done before, but they are expected to come up with a sound and style that has never been done before in the entire music industry. The industry looks to SHINee to set the trends and to show them the next direction to take. And that continues still today even after more than 13 years in the industry. -- SHINee are also often the ones to start the next dance style or trend in the Kpop industry with their choreography. -- They were one of the first groups to use a world-famous choreographer to create their dance for their "Sherlock (Clue & Note)" MV. "Sherlock" was the first time SM (or pretty much anyone in the Kpop industry) had ever used a famous choreographer, and at the time, it was the most expensive Kpop production ever. -- They are also the group that is most likely to appear on the first episode or on the pilot episode of a new variety show and it is said that it's good luck to have SHINee on the program first because that means it will be a success.

Kinda tmi 😅 by the time amigo came out in 2008 SHINee were so popular among high schoolers and middle schoolers so naturally me ,my sister and her friends knew lyrics to amigo by heart but many were misheard specially English lyrics so we used to sing cold a** baby (without knowing the meaning) instead of cold eyes baby 😂 but what is more fascinating is that no-one corrected us🙃

love like oxygen is one of my top 10 faves from shinee and may i say that they performed the song better as they matured. the best live performance that i have seen for the song was in 2015 in mcountdown, cmiiw, fellow shawols, when key became the mc for the show. they performed the song live with scrapped mr because their voices have changed so much. it was one of their best music show performance for me and that is saying something as they always rocked during performances.

I didn't realize how serious Taemin looked when doing a dance solo at the start😳 it really is amazing to see how far they have come over the years! Love them so much! I love that you are doing this cause I'm a babywol as well(found kpop at the end of February this year with Super m), so I'm excited! So I also didn't realize how different Taemin's voice sounded back then. Like I had herd people called him tone Def and crap back then and now that I've herd his voice from then I can tell he was in training and clearly his voice was still changing. I know I can tell the difference only cause my mom taught me to sing at a young age so I've always been surrounded by singing and the stages of what a voice goes through when voice training. Loved this reaction! Amigo has a special place in my heart because it was what led me to SHINee. I thought it was so cool and edgy back then 😆. Another fact Taemin used to work really hard in his younger days. And didn't sing much in the beginning. SM entertainment refused to train him vocally. So members Jonghyun and onew have him the required training. And once they thought him ready have him more vocal singing roles as well as his dancing.

The song SHINee WORLD is actually the song after which we got our fandom name SHINee WORLD.The rap in which members' names are menton is actually pretty cursed i mean i'm not sure if cursed is the right word but all of them just hate it and can't ACTUALLY don't WANT to hear or sing it.And this song gave them the nicknames like bling bling Jonghyun , dubu Onew,Almighty Key,powerful Taemin and flaming charisma Minho and they obviously hate these names too.

So excited that you're going to go through chronologically, I hope you'll include some of the safe for youtube Japanese mvs like Your Number and Get The Treasure! I have the same reaction looking at Taemin's face in replay. I've always found Key to be super versatile with his voice, just listen to everything he tries in Helium! I think the natural feeling in mvs and music shows has come with age and experience but they always seemed relaxed and in the moment at their concerts from the very beginning! Back when 240p was the best you could get you needed extreme close ups to see anything at all! It used to be one of my least favourites but the live rock version completely sold me on AMiGo, hard rock/metalhead Jonghyun and Taemin just living their best lives. I don't know if you saw them but Taemin made fun of his jerking dance from AMiGo in an ending fairy during DCM era live stages. Dibidibidis our national anthem! I think every SM artist has a similar style introductory song by the same writer, they're all iconic. It's practically a comedy song, I love it so much. Your hair looks stunning btw!

Thank you for featuring my comment 💕. In starting part of love like oxygen jonghyun said he tried to put a bit of MJ style. Also,the growling, cool , angry ,secret persona of SHINee was probably SM built. They wanted to do a mysterious concept with SHINee . Now that you pointed out I noticed how different the performances of that songs are now as compared to then. It really cracks me how kibum , jjong and Minho are going good with angry expression and then there's onew and Taemin looking so adorable even when they are trying to maintain a stoic expression. Onew laughing throughout A.M.I.G.O. lol

Brings back so many memories .... used to watch these live shows on VHS. We had to "hire" them from these korean grocery stores in Australia every week. Waiting for any newcomers or the group comebacks. 2nd / 3rd generation Kpop were very memorable .... no youtube back then :)

Love Like Oxygen was still in 2008, just months after debut.. so I think there tends to be moments when their movements/expressions were unintentionally exaggerated (? dont know the word) and less natural.. but.. it makes watching them progress years later that’s so satisfying. They are improving in every MV they did. And generally, even for their debut era MVs, they are more natural during live performances, theyre probably still awkward with the camera and all.. 😅😅.

Iconic debut song. But their looks are so cute. There’s something so special about this time. Even idols who debut now, they don’t really have an awkward phase. You know? Look at aespa. They came to the scene in 2020 and now they are one of the biggest and they had no time to look awkward or out of step.
