Watches needn’t be expensive or high horology to interest me. And yet, as someone who owns some (what I consider to be) high horology watches (which are certainly expensive), I’m pleasantly surprised and delighted at my latest watch purchase.
The NEW Timex Marlin Jet Automatic looks good and feels good. It adds to my daily dilemma, in an already crowded field: what watch to wear?
And it also leaves me reconsidering and redefining what I expect from watches, let alone from budget-friendly timepieces.
In this review, I share my views on the Timex Marlin Jet’s design, features, and overall value.
From its unique space-age aesthetics to the practicality of its design, I explore what makes the Timex Marlin Jet stand out, for me.

You are truly a watch enthusiast and not a watch snob if you can strap on a Timex as easily as a Lange. Bravo. I also have a Timex in my collection with it being the first mechanical watch ever gifted to me by my dad when I was a kid. I may need to get another after seeing this one. Looks sharp!

The Timex history is actually really interesting. Many of the old watches are stamped Great Britain and were made in Dundee. They're easy to date from the model numbers so I have a birth year mechanical Timex made in Dundee that still keeps fantastic time. It didn't end well for Timex in the UK after new management sparked a very bitter strike that ultimately marked the end of manufacture here. There've been a few missteps since then but also some inspired releases - this is definitely one of the latter.

I actually really like the looks of it, gives Zenith Elite vibes. Affordable watches also make me appreciate my more expensive pieces that much more.

Great review! I guess I would consider myself a Timex fan!? Definitely a fan of the Marlin line. I own the Marlin "mod" sixties inspired one, which I find to be a charming casual watch, as well as the Timex "Q" chrono (not from the Marlin line) which I find to be just a fun watch. The jet caught my attention as well! Definitely on my "Buy" list. That dial is so interesting to me. I am also interested in the Marlin "california dial" that always seems to go out of stock, if you havent seen that one.

I managed to get an example of this watch, and I can tell you I love it, for the same reasons you explain in your video. I don’t know if this sounds stupid or not but the watch makes me feel clever for having purchased it. I was not expecting to like it as much as I do. One comment I can add to the video is about the movement: apparently the behaviour of the seconds hand, jumping about a little when setting the time, is attributable to a design feature of the Miyota 8- series. The seconds hand is indirectly driven via the third wheel and apparently this is a feature of this particular design detail. It is not a defect per se; it’s an artifact of the design. Apparently it’s a bit old-fashioned but has some advantages in terms of assembling and servicing the movement. Anyway it’s not because the movement is defective in any way. Astonishingly, my example keeps the best time of all my mechanical watches. I have been running it for several days and (you might find this difficult to believe) has neither gained not lost a single second. I recognize this is due to luck, but does not make me feel inclined to grumble about the movement!

Great video and refreshingly fun choice of watch. Just a little correction: NASA didn’t choose the Speedmaster with hesalite for the reasons you note, because when the Speedmaster Professional was flight qualified it only was offered with the hesalite crystal. They never flight qualified another mechanical watch but the X-33 has a sapphire so I have to believe the hesalite doesn’t shatter explanation is a myth. Cheers.

Well, thank you for that explainer. I heard that story on KZbin elsewhere and just accepted it as fact. Can’t recall who was telling the story, but they were reputable… Arguably, I should be tracking them down again to blame them for making me buy a watch! Regardless, I still want to believe it’s true !
@orangehand7929
@orangehand7929 5 ай бұрын
@@watchenthusiastlondon I’ve heard it too. Very common sales pitch in the hesalite vs sapphire debate. It’s also a more exciting explanation than the truth that NASA didn’t see any value in testing another watch. In fact, Omega introduced the Speedmaster Mark II in 1969 to be a better space watch, incidentally with a mineral glass crystal, and NASA just shrugged and kept the original. ‘If it ain’t broke…’

Unfortunate that it’s sold out currently. My dad bought me a 19mm Artem sailcloth strap for a Christopher Ward C63 Sealander GMT that I was interested in buying, but then CW changed the strap size on the GMT before I could purchase it. It would fit perfectly on this watch, as well as look stunning. I’m going to keep my eyes peeled. Great review!

You, sir, have a sonorous and pleasant voice. The 34mm Marlin art deco, and this Jet have my attention, purely because I appreciate the design. I am afraid it will be a snack next to other watches by Cartier and Grand Seiko, so I am wondering.... Three months down the line, you still have and enjoy this watch? Was it a snack, or does it have meaningful staying power?
@watchenthusiastlondon
@watchenthusiastlondon Ай бұрын
Interesting question. When my teenage son’s Bremont went in for service, he asked me if he could wear a white dial watch, so I let him use the Marlin Jet. I have no idea what he does, but he’s heavy handed and it’s now come back to me with the hesalite dial all scratched up and the person strap has seen better days: it’s all smegged up and looks like it needs a serious refresh. Have been trying to wear the watch on a different strap but can’t seem to make it work. In short, whilst I hadn’t heard the term before, yes - I’d say it’s a snack. Its appeal and pristine look has been well and truly scuffed up and that has upset my interest in the watch and also my dynamic with it. 😏
@Chrissepisje
@Chrissepisje 25 күн бұрын
@@watchenthusiastlondon Perversely, the Timex will allow you to fix that. Ten minutes with a polywatch cloth, and your hesalite is good as new, and when you slap a new perlon or leather strap on it you have all your mid-century goodness back. Someone manhandling a watch and getting it back to you in a dubious state does not a bad watch make, it's just that ninteen-sixties dressy affair might not be the watch of choice for your son. I suggest a Damasko DS30 for him, and then wishing him good luck trying to dent that tank. :) Oddly enough, that story just cemented the watch as one to keep an eye on. i might pick one up and then proceed to not beat it to snot.

That's the point about hesalite: I'm not taking my watches to space. I wear them in every day life and it's far more likely for a hesalite crystal to get covered in scratches than for a sapphire crystal to shatter. I know scratches can be polished out with Polywatch, but it's nothing I like to be worried about. One more remark, thick watches are a bugbear of yours? You own some Bremont watches and to my understanding they aren't known to be slim watches.
@watchenthusiastlondon
@watchenthusiastlondon 5 ай бұрын
Yes, although I’ve yet to damage my hesalite crystal (plus I tend to accept the scratches for what they are). And yes, the thicker, chunkier watches are increasingly an issue for me. My Bremont 1918 is a monster. So too my rose gold Bremont Victory. That said, I have and do still wear them (occasionally, not daily) and it’s sort of works for a special occasion. But no, not as an every day, practical option. As I say, my tendency now is towards smaller, thinner watches…
