Discovery Family is a channel waiting to die. In this commentary and borderline rant, the channel's nine years of modern relevance, from The Hub to Hub Network and to Discovery Family's current format, is explored and discussed to figure out where the channel went wrong, and why it's so irrelevant nowadays. From a hopeful and diverse slate of series in its early days to the scheduling desolation and content aimlessness of its current era, how did this channel become like so many of Discovery's other channels -- useless, unnecessary, and living long past the time it should've shut down?

The worst part of Discovery Family is that it doesn't know what it's audience is. My little pony gen 4 is over. So all cartoons but Transformers is just reruns during the day, while kids are at school. Then during the evening is stuff from other channels like animal planet. The only live action original is a cooking show that isn't really original. Who is this channel for?

Discovery Family really DOES need to have it's plug pulled For years, They relied WAY too heavily on My Little Pony for ratings They relied on it so much, they cancelled the shows peopled loved like Pound Puppies (the reboot from the creators of "Recess"), The Aquabats Super Show, Dan Vs. and also The Haunting Hour all because they aren't making the same ratings AS MLP: FiM They also shitcanned BBC's critically acclaimed "Horrible Histories" after a week on the air without any marketing or fanfare for its presence on the channel Now that MLP: FiM is over, Discovery Family has become the Titanic - slowly sinking into the abyss since they put ALL their eggs into the pony basket and playing it way too safe for its own good Also, It's telling that Discovery has no respect for the channel when the channel is excluded from the recently launched "Discovery+" streaming service

The Hub could have lasted and made an impact if Hasbro continued making great content. They had the retro outlook, airing shows like Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, Goosebumps, The Batman, Superman The Animated Series and Batman Beyond. And they had great original programming. Dan Vs is arguably the greatest Hub show, next to R.L. Stine The Haunting Hour. They even aired Pound Puppies, Transformers Prime, Spooksville, Aquabats Superhow!. They had content but ended most of their shows around 2013 in favor of My Little Pony. And while I never personally got into the show, thankfully, it did bring in the views. But that was the problem! Over reliant on one show and their demographic push. The channel had blocks like Hubboom but also aired a ton of MLP and LPS. They should have stuck to one-preferable boys as toys sold.

What happened to the Hub was Spongebob syndrome but worse. after MLP became incredibly successful, Hasbro and Discovery put all their eggs in that basket ass the rest of their programming suffered as a result. This doomed their ratings, ultimately leading to Margaret Loesch stepping down as network president and Discovery rebranding the Network, though the network also struggled with ad revenue because Mattel didn't want to advertise on a rival's network. Discovery is notorius for mismanaging their networks, such as the botched launch of the Oprah Winfrey Network , the many programming changes of Destination America, and now leaving Discovery Family to die. It is no wonder they're getting bought out by the Warner Bros. Perhaps Discovery Family will get axed by WB and we'll see something like the Hub, a watered down Cartoon Network/Boomerang, perhaps they pull the plug on it altogether.

Dan Vs was the greatest Hub show, among a great programming offering. They also had R.L. Stine The Haunting Hour, Pound Puppies, Aquabats Supershow, Spooksville, Transformers Prime and SheZow. If they do bring back the Hub or their older shows, I doubt it’ll be on Discovery Family. They own EntertainmentOne, so it’ll be a streaming service.

The Reason Why The Hub Network was rebranded as Discovery Family, Discovery Took Majority Ownership of The Hub Network, and planned to rebrand it, with this new ownership, Discovery Will own 60% And Hasbro Will Own 40% Of The Hub Network. Notable Reasons For This Because Of Lack Of Advertising From Rival Companies Such As Mattel and others, for the specific reason is that they didn’t want to pay for ad space on a network that is owned by one of its main rivals. The trouble Launch with The OWN network was also the notable factor in the whole mess. (I know about the channel)

With the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery Inc now as Warner Bros. Discovery, we could possibly have this channel turn into a cartoonito channel because the block now has less time on CN. If cartoonito becomes a channel here in the USA possibly replacing Discovery Family just like how cartoonito replaced Boomerang in Latin America a question still remains. Well I do have a little plan...I think Discovery Family should replace TLC mostly because that is what happened here in the first place where Ready Set Learn was moved to Discovery Kids. So that Discovery Family itself would be replaced by something else, something more aimed to the ones who tune in to CN, Nick and Disney every day. And I have a plan...I made a network project that I created that might give Cartoon Network some competition...It would bring Transformers back in the spotlight and focus on the other animated series that isn't just MLP. It would have a lot of imported animated series that never aired on the US entirely...along with bringing anime in a stated territory that there would be a thing that cable isn't really dead (Especially when it comes to Japanese Anime)...it would be available to basic packages for a bigger audience and a new thing to make things a little more suited. The app would have access to the originals made by hard working creators in a more mature demographic like the 10-18 audience and imported series not as a leak, but as an added rating to the series....after the official airing of a new episode has passed, it then goes to the app...that way, both Cable lovers and streamers will both be proud on their terms in animation...and the channel is known as...Ani-ToonTV....a cartoon channel aimed for kids, teens and adults...because animation...is for everyone. The name is what made me have my username...for a little mature inspiration feel on it.

This is a lot to take in, and I admire your gusto, so here are my thoughts, with a little bit of reality sprinkled in: - TLC is never going away, and especially not for Discovery Family. TLC is one of Discovery's biggest brands, plus it's their female-skewing channel; in that niche it is doing very well for itself. - On the off chance Discovery Family were to put in effort again, that's the move they'd have to make; they'd have to pivot towards the Nick/CN/Disney audience _and_ focus on a variety of programming besides MLP and besides just whatever Hasbro puts in. I am a big supporter of foreign series and cartoons and wish more of them would arrive in America. The big three aren't going to do it (or do it well), so a competitive fourth player is needed if only for that reason. (I doubt Discovery Family in any form can be it at this point but I digress). - I doubt that anime, beyond your typical toy-based franchises (Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, et al) will _ever_ be a viable offering here in the US. There is a big divide between Western and Eastern animation fans, and I doubt both styles can seriously coexist on the same channel (toy-based franchises notwithstanding), because the existence of one will likely alienate fans of the other (which will lower the potential audience). From what I've heard, Adult Swim's Toonami, the lone vestige of anime on mainstream US TV, is basically running at a loss compared to the rest of the network. - Basic cable packages are pretty much all settled at this point in the history of cable; I don't even know if Discovery Family would make it into a digital basic tier in its current state (or ever). Unless they swapped it out with a channel already on basic cable (which I doubt they'd do, given many of Discovery's most popular brands are there), such a move would have to come at the time of Discovery's contract renegotiations with cable providers; a patchwork of agreements where it isn't guaranteed that the provider will agree to Discovery's terms (leading to a standoff and a potential channel blackout). - Your app explanation is basically how most channels' streaming apps work; once the episode airs, it generally goes to the network's app for a certain period of time. Cartoon Network has really been the big violator of that norm in recent years. - While I'd like to see more things for the woefully underserved teen demo, smashing kids', teen, and adult cartoons on the same channel sounds like a recipe for disaster in one way or another. Aiming in such a broad manner is not only antiquated but also arguably part of how Discovery Family got into its current predicament. A vague focus attracts no one.

And speaking of Discovery Family, I just heard the news that Discovery Family is now showing vintage WB cartoons on the schedule, and “Looney Tunes” is one of my favorite cartoons of all time are now has a new home. And I hope Discovery Family is going to do a lot better since they’re now airing “Looney Tunes” for the first time back on Monday. It will do better than “My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic” reruns if Hasbro is ending their deal by either around 2024. I hope “Looney Tunes” on Discovery Family will do better. Kudos to Discovery Family for airing “Looney Tunes” for the first time.

The rebrand of The Hub to Discovery Family was certainly an admission that their efforts to create a new kids network had effectively failed. I don't know if The Hub returning in exactly the same way it did in 2010 would exactly work -- things have certainly changed since then. What I'd like to see is the amount of effort put in during those early days to come back in some way. Given DF rates pretty much dead-last among the kidsnets, I doubt that'll happen. The modern competitors are Disney XD, Disney Channel, Disney Jr., Baby TV, Baby First (all which are Disney owned brands), Universal KiDS, nickelodeon, nick jr., teennick, nicktoons, Cartoon Network and Boomerang (not just for boomers) (both which are American Telephone And Telegraph (AT&T) brands).

Here’s what I think: Discovery Family Channel should NOT die! I believe it has a purpose. The one thing that went wrong is changing its slogan to All Together Now, and changing their graphics! I say switch them BACK to the “Let’s Go!” 2016 graphics, and KEEP MLP on the channel for reruns, because I see MLP too big to die in reruns, ESPECIALLY since it’s a popular show! So I say, BRING back the “Let’s Go!” Graphics for 2016, KEEP MLP on the network, and even maybe AIR shows like Tom & Jerry Kids, Snorks, & Earthworm Jim and maybe then it will continue be a good network for our next generation, like say 2020-2029! And if that’s not enough, maybe air Beast Morphers and MLP G5 as PRIMETIME programming, THEN we would have a network to be proud of. While Cartoon Network is just starting to break free from years of bad decisions, It's very apparent that Discovery Family's best days are behind it. The channel's schedule structure proves that it doesn't really want to compete with the big three (or even the smaller rivals) and offer decent programming at decent hours. _My Little Pony_ is really the last show of importance Discovery Family has; everything else is imports, and while I'm a fan of imports, DF has few of them, and they're not all that interesting. If they wanted to be even remotely competitive, they have to start scheduling primetime as more of a kids' channel, something I don't see them doing. MLP G4 will probably be on the channel until its death -- it was Discovery Family's SpongeBob -- and G5 (if such a series comes) will probably air on the channel out of both Hasbro's liability to DF and also because no other channel will want to pick it up; "girl shows" (or at least perceived ones like MLP is) never fare well here in the US. I doubt they'll be acquiring or producing much new programming at all, if any, and especially not your suggestions -- _Tom and Jerry Kids_, for instance, I'd imagine to be deeply in WarnerMedia's fold, and if they haven't stuck it on the Boomerang streaming service by now I'd expect it there soon.
