My friend was no astronaut but he went from pfcs to full bird colonel And was the squadron commander of P 51s. He shared with me intelligence on HARP and it's abilities to modify weather or be used a weapon. We wormed together on Howard Hughes favorite plane a S 43 we put it back together after being in storage for 25 years we both enjoyed flying he took me to my limits and then some. He let build a complete power plant for a 1919 command air it flew fantastically then one day after flying it for five years in his hometown he miscalculated and set it down hard. At the hospital they found more than cracked _ribs he had advanced Cancer. He moved back to Houston to be With me and just by accident he rented a house across from the house I was raised in my life is full of such things so I watched him die and he gave on last gift he want to know who Jesus is.

All evidence is there never was such a sensor on Cooper's flight, and his 'treasure map' was an imaginary story he told in his lonely old age, with Parkinson's dementia, after he'd washed out of the Apollo program for losing his mojo. A few years ago I was at a professional pilots' Christmas party where the guest speaker was Bob Button the NASA public relations officer during the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo years. He knew all of the early astronauts very well. After his speech it was time for questions and answers. I asked him a question about Gordon Cooper. I asked: "Is it true Gordon Cooper really saw those flying saucers he spoke about"? Mr. Button said with a big smile, "Well, Gordon Cooper thought he did".

@@r.6731 -- "this awesome man's actual findings " -- .... which gets us into painful themes, like how after he had been secretly washed out of the Apollo program, he began telling some very far-out stories, like having saved the shuttle program from a lethal design flaw [that nobody has any record of ever existing] by relaying a telepathic warning from space aliens, or of his Gemini capsule's skin being hit and punctured by a meteorite storm [that nobody back on Earth could ever find the slightest trace of on the hull], or of his taking out-the-window 35-mm photos on that mission where he could read license plates on cars in Texas [which for the camera he carried was physically impossible], etc etc. Those were sad times that for the sake of Cooper's genuine reputation from the 1960s, we probably shouldn't pay too much attention to -- but we can't pick and choose WHICH of the stories he told in those years we want to believe, and those which we admit were attention-seeking fantasy. This doesn't even count the faked stories made up about Cooper by UFO writers, like the totally imaginary UFO encounter on his Mercury-9 space flight.

After an honorable NASA career, Cooper left the astronaut program under a cloud. In those sad, last years, he made TV ads for a company selling a magic carburator that turned air into gasoline. According to a detailed article in the Wall Street journal, he endorsed a series of investment schemes that went bust, costing investors millions of dollars [including most of his own savings]. Cooper claimed he'd saved the shuttle program from a lethal design flaw by relaying to NASA a telepathic warning from a non-human civilization [no memory or record of the alleged flaw and fix has ever been found]. He became an avid supporter of the authenticity of Billy Meier's Swiss UFO and alien encounters photos and stories, and even claimed that contactee Daniel Fry had arranged for him a ride around the moon on a UFO, for which he packed his camera kit and a travel bag and sat by the phone awaiting the pickup location, but then was disappointed to learn the aliens had cancelled it due to political conflicts on their home planet [it's in his autobiography]. He told folks about a secret sensor on his Mercury-9 flight by which he spotted precise locations of sunken Spanish treasure galleons [but kept it secret from NASA], and he measured precise latitude/longitude of the wrecks by eyeball out the capsule’s four-inch porthole. He described taking photos in 1965 from Gemini-5 so sharp you could read auto license plates and that he later even tracked down one driver from a plate number who confirmed he'd been in the city on that day. He also told a tale of being peppered by meteoroids during his 1965 flight that left deep gouges in his capsule’s hull - none of which can be seen on the capsule on display in Houston. He told the tale of hand-controller flying a manmade UFO prototype from a Utah inventor around his barn [it just hummed in its cradle but never moved, according to the inventor’s daughter, who was there], How many of those stories do you find even remotely credible?

Sadly, Cooper was well along into Parkinson's by then, a terrible malady often accompanied by delusions and false memories. Shameful.

My father named his 57 foot cement schooner "nuestra senora de guadalupe-cannery row". It sunk in santa cruz 15 months after its launch in monterey at the coastguard landfill. Our home and worksite for a year(1981-1982).I had a paperback in 1976 called the burmuda triangle I brought to monterey from home. The year my father moved to monterey from santa clara. In 1999 my father says to me at humphreys in san diego during my visit,"petey! if you hadnt brought that book into the house(that first year in 1976) I wouldnt have named the boat that. I didnt know it (the original spanish galleon)sunk!" He was serious. He pretended he was joking but he was blaming me.I wasnt even part of the crew in 1983. I joined the marines after he threw me off the boat in that landfill..I was back with mom and my stepfather in santa clara(as a reservist) when it went down in front of the santa cruz beach boardwalk. But he read a book I brought into the cottage decades earlier so it was my fault. That's my father.
