As a Discus Keeper myself. I agree with everything you said when it comes to 4"+ fish in a HUGE aquarium. They are mature, much hardier, and more tolerant of conditions(less water changes). But most folks aren't ready to shell out that kind of cash for a group of high quality 4" Discus. 2" Discus with the same regimen are going to give you a hard time. They need frequent, large water changes and frequent feedings for them to turn out nice! It's no getting around that. I was cheap and started with smaller fish. Absolutely the biggest time commitment to the hobby by far! But it was a labor of love and they turned out great! I also realize why 4"+ fish cost so much! LOL

Kev you are the reason I got into keeping cichlids period. Now Cichlids are all I keep. My main tank is a my 135 Gallon Peacock and Hap tank and I also raise African cichlids in a 75 gallon tank. Ive been keep Discus for a number of years now an I actually find them easier to keep than Peacocks and Haps. I feed my Discus 3 times a day 5 days out of the week and on weekends I only feed them twice a day. Like you I don't do anything to my water parameters other than raise the temp. My tap water comes out at a nice 7ph and all of my discus are farm raised and I know for a fact they were raised in neutral water. I do use Purigen, but I always use purigen. Purigen to me is the best thing since sliced bread for fish keepers. Use it in all of my tanks and even put some in the Canister filter of my sisters turtle tank at her house and she was blown away at how clear the water was staying. The discus are easier to keep than peacocks and haps because I dont have to mess with their water perameters. My African tank I have to raise the ph. I do about 65% water change once a week for my discus, while I do a 50 percent water change twice a week for my overstocked discus tank. I can add new discus to the tank with out worrying about the other fish trying to murder it. With the peacock and hap tank, Im stressed out and have to watch the tank like a hawk if Im not adding 3 to 5 fish at a time. I was told how difficult keeping discus are, but luckily I am that guy that tends to gravitate to things that people say are hard or cant be done. Surprisingly enough I found that keeping discus at least in my opinion is a bit easier than keeping peacocks and haps.

Discus are not that delicate/hard, but they require more feeding, leading to more water changes. I 100% agree! The tank I just setup is 200ish with a continuous water change system. I still do water changes to clean the tank. I live in Colorado and the water is hard 350 and high PH 7.6 my fish are fine. I think consistent water parms are more important than chasing the perfect numbers. I change around 1% every hour. ( plus cleaning once a week ) I measure nitrate to adjust the water change rate. My last Discus tank I did 2 water changes a week which got a little burdensome. We moved, so this time I got access to a drain and water. I am very happy with the setup, now I just focus on cleaning and the fish.

Want to add one thing here...discus from reputable breeder's/farm like IP discus have very good genetics and bloodline which will ensure that your discus keeping journey is pleasant and enjoyable. Hello Kev! Hope you and your fish room are doing well. The only thing I see as a problem in your discus tank is the water flow created by the wavemaker and that is making the discus a LITTLE stressed. Again if we don't run the wavemaker its hard to keep the nooks & corners of the tank clean especially the one as large as yours.
@KaveManAquatics3 ай бұрын
My wavemakers run at 10% power all day except for 45 minutes at 80% power for waste removal. Flow is not a problem for them in this tank 😁

I had 12 discus in a 90 galon tank, medium in size. The problem was with the water, the TDS of my tap water is 900 😂 I was sourcing low TDS water from the market but slowly that started to become a pain and it started giving me stress than enjoying the hobby so have to let go the discus 😢.

I would love to keep discus someday and I ain't afraid of water changes and feeding is the best part of the hobby imho. So this video makes me feel a little better about that. One question: what about water temperature? They require warmer conditions, correct? How sensitive are they to lower tropical temperatures?

If I may add something to the video myself: I've kept discus in the past and the first difficulty that comes to my mind is the act of choosing the fish because bad genetics and bad health conditions lead to illnesses more easily, choose only health fishes with a proper rate of growth (dwarfism is very common in this fish) you Kave have very very good looking fishes 😉

If you have heavily planted or hardscaped tank it can be a challenge with discus. Especially if you feed messy foods. The food gets caught under things and pollutes the water. Remember its not the water that makes the fish sick, its all the stuff that decays and pollutes the water that does

I agree with you on this video, Discus are not hard per say to keep. However, I would say that someone should be maybe more than a beginner in order to really be able to take care of discus. At least a year or two experience keeping regular fish (so you can get all your mistakes out of the way). Even regular fish do better with weekly larger water changes (20-30%). Especially since your average discus will likely cost $75-150 vs regular community fish which are cheap..better to figure more stuff out with community fish :) anyway ..just my opinion..great video though!

This isnt a video about water parameters.
@K.ZTropicals3 ай бұрын
@@KaveManAquatics You should talk about the water temperature because it is one of the basics of raising this type of fish and because most aquatic plants cannot adapt to this temperature.

I have many videos on Discus. Try searching for them.

I dunno bud. Your Discus are badly stunted for a reason. You refuse to see it.
@KaveManAquatics2 ай бұрын
Or maybe you refuse to acknowledge the growth rate of my Discus doesn't have to be like yours.
@DiscusNTАй бұрын
@@KaveManAquatics ALL Discus have 15 month to grow without ANY stunting periods, you have exceeded that with most of yours already and you have a Tank full of stunted fish, now you claiming success at the Discus game. You fish are stressed out and stunted. You kept most of them alive, but you failed at the Discus game period. 15 months, they spent more than half that time in cloudy water, it stunted them. You admit in other videos your water change cycle on that tank is every 2 to 3 weeks, just sad.... You keep a great African cichlid tank for sure 100% hands down bar none, but stop misleading people on your Discus failures.

@@DiscusNTdon’t bother brother he won’t listen, he’s sold out to a chemical sponsor. Real discus experts would never take advice from someone who deletes opinions he doesn’t agree with. I don’t think he realises how shady and fake the comment section looks with only love hearts everywhere lol but as soon as you question, you’re deleted. And he’s admitted that. Anyways for real discus advice see Alex Piwowarski, he would laugh at these coin sized discus. Can’t wait to see the Kaveman try a planted tank next. 😂

Mostly wrong and bad advice. In fact the Discus in your aquarium don't look well. One blue has an eye infection that probably kill him soon.the other blues look emaciated. None of those fish have a full belly i would bet haven't even been in there a year. Discus like reef tanks are far beyond the vast majority of home aquarium keepers. I posted that George Farmer that Discus are not community tank fish. He learned i was right. MD has had them die on him. Public aquaria have to restock them as money is no object for them-ha. Keeping and thriving are not the same thing.

They've been with me 3 years and haven't stopped growing. (Maybe not at the pace an expert like you says they should) Lost only 1 due to bloat. So....go fear monger somewhere else. On this channel I dont ride a high horse stoking fear into beginners that want try something people like you say they shouldn't. Sorry your participation trophy wont go far here.

@@KaveManAquatics Clickbait advice. Those fish haven't been there 3 years in that aquarium. You didn't even notice the sick fish we all see let alone treat it.
