Discus in a 30 Gallon Planted Tank - update 10

Two Red Melon Discus were recently added to this well established tank about a week ago. The four fish thankfully get along very well, and seem happy in this heavily planted tank. A Bristlenose Pleco keeps the bottom and plants clean. Plants are primarily Anubias, with some Java Ferns and Bolbitis.

I thought the minimum tank size was 55 gallons for 4/5 of them, are they very young fish? They seem fine in there. They are beautiful!

Luis... thanks 🙏 Substrate is a mix of Flourite Red with some black gravel. Lighting is a Marineland 24” LED light, mostly white with a few blues for color balance, placed over a glass canopy.

Love it the tank , do you have a update? I have a 32 well planted with two discus. I’m debating on adding more. Everything I read says don’t do it. But I keep fresh and salt and have been in the hobby for 10+ years. I’m not a pro but I feel I know enough and have enough dedication to make it work. Any tips and tricks would be great. 😁

I think two is fine if they get along. You could add one more, but that’s it! Here is an update where you can see I had to remove one aggressive fish, leaving just three. I keep discus for 20 years or so. Once, I raised 5 discus in 20 gallon tank with every day 50% water change with no problem. It was an experiment.

how do you keep the algae away? especially from the plants.

Jet...nitrates are almost zero due to the heavy plant growth. Helps to feed only one cube of bloodworms daily or less. 50% water changes are made if algae starts to build up on glass or plants.

Three is best to reduce aggression. I had to remove the larger red one. These are young fish, about 3-4”.
