I was talking barrel design with Buck and it sparked a barrel harmonics conversation so we recorded it and later added some pics. Some people think a steel barrel does not move, expand or vibrate when shooting and those that know it does move does not understand how it can change accuracy and precision shots.

I have really enjoyed these conversations with Mr Stienke. Something about the atmosphere of the small business and the shared wisdom of an elder, broken down for the layman. Reminds me of when I was a kid, working in an old fashioned hardware store. I think, I learned more in a couple years of part-time in hardware store work than I did from my 12 years of government public-education. Please keep making content from conversations with Buck. I know who I will be ordering my next NFA item from, when the time comes.

Thanks Buck & Rick! I spent a good amount of time designing tuned exhaust systems for racing and it sounds like a lot of the same logic and theories apply. Its MUCH more intricate and complicated than just sticking a tube with a bunch of baffles on the end of the gun.

Excellent explanation of harmonics. You want some interesting math, try figuring this stuff out. It made me cry a lot in school, because they never told me when I enlisted I needed rithmatic. They said all I’d be doing was jumping out of pine trees killing people. They lied, they don’t let Marines climb trees as a rule.

I have always considered that precision handloading, finding that "sweet spot load", probably had something to do with this exact thing. I mean we are actually tuning a load to a particular rifle/barrel. Beats me, lol, sounds good tho. Thanks Buck for your time and expertise, thank you Rick for getting the vid. Doesn’t fluting help dampen the harmonics? Learned that as the outward waves impact the fluting groves they are severely deminished

Questions : (1). Does the weight of a "muzzle device" greatly affect accuracy with barrel harmonics..?? (2). Bore temperature; Is COLD more accurate than a HOT barrel when comparing shots.?

The neutral 'nodes' (as you say) is when the barrel is at max whip velocity. The upper or lower peaks is when the barrel is actually stopped.
@drd1924
@drd1924 Жыл бұрын
Noides are when the harmonics/vibrations cancel each other out thereby dampening itself ineffect. Just like 2 speakers 180 deg oyt of phase the noise may be at maximum volume but the sound is camcelled. You are correct the upper and lower peaks are when the barrel may have actually stopped BUT BUT. you do not know where that stop may be in the X,Y plane whereas the bore may be pointed left or right of center at an upper or lowest peak.

Oooo, thanks for that Rick , I really appreciate you putting this up, I always wondered about how that actually took place as the bullet is fired through the barrel. Man, that's amazing how that all works together like that, and finally having it explained so that I (who don't know nuffin but the next chord in the song) can understand it. See, I've been told that when the bullet leaves the barrel, it drops low and then rises back up to get where it's supposed to be at a certain point in its travel. That didn't sound right to me. Could still be true but something about that doesn't sit well with me. Thanks Rick.

Rick, could you ask Buck about adding mass to specific places on the barrel to tune out the harmonics? Example: Adding something like a collar clamp around the barrel or would it limit the expansion of the barrel as the bullet passes through that point?
@HeyGunPeople
@HeyGunPeople 5 жыл бұрын
bigger thicker barrel will help but heavy and more material and money
@jacobwhite936
@jacobwhite936 5 жыл бұрын
@@HeyGunPeople I was thinking more like a piece perhaps an inch long that could be moved along the outside of the barrel to add mass to only a specific spot. That way you could tune the barrel by changing where the extra mass was. I know from precision machine balancing and from doing audio engineer work that harmonics can be tamed by doing something similar.

Random thoughts...It seems that the only effect that would create a vertical standing wave would be gravity. The spin imparted on the bullet should actually create a helical wave (hold a piece of rope vertically and rotate it). Note that the nodes are still centered in the wave. The suppressor is not a monolithic mass. The mass might be greater at the base, moving the "node" past the end of the barrel but not to the end of the suppressor. While "bull" barrels are more resistant to bending and cancel out some of the vertical wave, the twist of the helical wave is resisted by the barrel mass that is far from the center line by leverage. Watch slow motion of a recoil and you will often see the rifle twist in the shooters hands by recoil from the accelerating bullet mass (greater with greater bullet diameters and masses due to leverage).

On an AR-15 a vibrational wave travelling 20,000 fps will cover 32 in. (2X barrel length) in roughly .000133 seconds. Over .003 seconds the wave will oscillate along the barrel 22.5 times. .003 seconds is the elapsed time of the firing sequence from trigger pull till projectile exits muzzle. You can take that to the bank.

Did some research on the claim that cuts in the barrel will add to rigidity. All the top barrel manufactures say it's not so, that it's a common myth, that it's only for cooling purposes.
@adamstoeffler3678
@adamstoeffler3678 4 жыл бұрын
He did not say it would add rigidity. He said it would cut down on the weight while maintaining (more or less) the same rigidity as a barrel of the same width.
