Hi James, thank you for this very good video. I've now taken the book back off my shelf in my cellar-office and will bring it upstairs to the front room to have a look at again this evening. It is a pleasure to hear you articulate the curious and manifold qualities of our hobby; we are made happy by making and then by having what we have made perform in front of us - surely these are some of the oldest instincts of our species; to make, to play, to share! I look forward to your next book, and I've also enjoyed your latest Compendium too. Very best, Jonathan

Enjoyable video, James, especially to see the emotions and memories it evokes for you. Clearly it's a work for which you can be deservedly proud. It's prompted me to re-read my copy of it over the holidays. Best wishes to you and your family for a safe, peaceful and happy holiday season!

In which case, I'm glad to be of service, I hope you enjoy the re-read as much as I did!

Thanks for sharing the book and your insights, in a world of everything screaming for our attention and fast paced your channel is a nice break and reflective space. New favourite channel for my new hobby as I have recently discovered in N scale trains. Look forward to future videos.

Glad you enjoyed it - and have found the channel to encourage your introduction to the hobby too…

I've really resonated with your philosophy of having a story behind layouts or dioramas, when writing articles on layouts, that we should be expanding more on the story and the writer's connection to their creation (or recreation) and why that prototype resonates with them. I've been working on plans of my own for a OO gauge box file type layout based on Mallaig, and have been taking inspiration from Lochdubh. Certainly will be tracking down a copy of this book in the new year!

the West Highland line is just so modellable, i have an EM gauge layout called Glenuig, its been around a bit, it was built to re live days of ridding behind diesels on the line. i am now building, i say now, been 12 years and counting on it, an N gauge finscale layout of Bridge of Orchy set in the mid 1980's

Thank you, I hope you enjoy it when you get your hands on your own copy. It should certainly get you inspired for your project - Lochdubh incidentally is more fully featured in the Model Railway Companion, also published by Wild Swan.

Sadly many magazines aren't interested in that level of detail or format. The likes of the late Jack Ray did, in his bookzine publication "Model Railways and Their Builders". Model railways are multifaceted and works of art that reflect their builders.

Definitely try and track down my Companion, it is cover to cover this sort of thing.

Thanks Chris, still a lot to write for it, if I ever find the time to sit down and make a start it should be out towards Easter.

enjoyed that, looks like its another £18.50 out of the trainset fund, i love layouts that tell a story or revive memories, i think it carries over to the audience at shows, strange that

Sorry Gary, though if you’re like me a good book is as much of a treat as a new item of rolling stock. Thanks for the support.

I got in to your books via your KZbin channel and blog, so in my case the digital media has brought the physical media with it

@ I am and your reference to the Boothtown Tippler and plan idea took me to Gandy Dancer Productions videos. After getting lost in time there for a while I started researching similar systems closer to me… And now I have got a Lambton Accurascale Austerity on pre-order and a few live threads on RMWeb about the Lambton system and its wagons. So the inspiration from your media, physical and digital is far reaching indeed!

Are your books available in the U.S.?
@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways9 күн бұрын
Yes, but only from the UK, if that makes sense! I know for example that the Titfield Thunderbolt will price for US delivery.
