And here (The Netherlands) we boil the flaxseed for half an hour, then you get a snot like consistency that will also take out sand and other stuff from your horses system. I really appreciate the time and effort you put in on your website and the videos, there a great source of information for anybody who is willing to educate themselves further on the horse. Thank you for this.

I’ve been watching your videos for about 8 years now. I watch them to just remind myself from time to time. Your videos are still THE BEST out there. No frills, down to the root of horse care no nonsense bull. Haha! Thanks Rick! Huge fan! Also I have a couple of friends that work at horse barns and the supplements they give are ridiculous and make no sense. In my opinion it’s over doing it just to make themselves feel better. God didn’t create a horse to need all that. What the??

@zsofiawulf : orchard grass is OK, not my favorite, I feed it sometime but mixed in with other hay. Not sure where you are but find a few barns around your area and see where they get their hay, develop different sources and find variations. If there is cattle in your area find out where they get their hay. I am going to add a topic on this on my site so check back and I will put a link in the description box.

@MsHorselover8 : once or twice a week would be fine too, you could mix some flax seed or fiber in, again not big servings, better to give a cup or two in morning and a cup or two at night, than to give 3 or 4 cups at once.
@ThinkLikeAHorse14 жыл бұрын
@MsHorselover8 : Oat meal is ok, again in moderation, you can cook serve warm in the winter. Not familiar with coastal grass.

@horseawareness In NC. Everyone seems to grow their own hay out here. And it's all orchard grass. Pretty much every farmer, be it horse, cow, llama, or goat, around here uses it. I have seen barley and oat hay for sale at about $7-8 a pop. It has to be brought in from out of state. Alfalfa too. I've seen alfalfa for $10 a bale. Thanks for adding it on your site too. I have linked most of my fellow horse friends to your site so they can share the information.

@ThinkLikeAHorse14 жыл бұрын
@jackiibieber : Another foolish rumor running around the horse world. It take a cup of apple seeds to be toxic for a human, so a lot more to hurt a horse. So unless you are feeding just apple seeds, the seeds are good IN MODERATION, 6 or 10 apples a day is not going to hurt a horse at all. I will add this to my new section on supplements, I will put link in the description box when I am finished writing it, so check back for link.

My 7 year old AQHA has never been fed anything but grass, hay, carrots & de-wormer. In October I moved him to stables where most of the other self proclaimed "expert" riders basically seem to be of the thought that if I don't feed him a commercial supplement he's going to just succumb and die a horrible death... our Selenium deficient soil necessitates it. So I asked, how do the Elk, Deer and wild horses here seem to survive? I guess my horse has just been lucky for 7 years! Experts indeed!

My horse gets free choice grass and hay 24/7 then she gets her 'goodies' when I go out to the barn, my barn is just my grandmas friends place, it's only me out there that boreds and they have like 4-5 horses to a 15-20 acre pasture it's awesome place to be he also make his own hay

this is what the horses i look after and ride get to eat (i live in scotland) - all day or all night grazing then hay or haylage when they are in. 2 feeds a day, (for the ridden horse who is very chubby at the moment) handfull of chaff, salt, miconised linseed (for their coat and feet) a mineral balancer, (copper, zink, and calcium carbonite aswell as our grass is deficent in those minerals) then a carrot or apple and in the winter beet pulp mixed with water for the yearling 2 feeds as well, 2 handfuls of chaff, linseed, wheat bran, pea protein (important for developing young horses) and a balancer as well as a carrot or apple and beet pulp in the winter mixed with water their food is purely for the minerals and is normaly only a little handful

I give my girl free choice grass hay, and a flake of alfalfa 3 times a day. The alfalfa is because she likes it. She also gets 1.5 lbs dry beet pulp I soak and 6 lbs of her feed every day. 3 gets 3 meals spread out over the course of the day. We just found out she has severe arthritis in her knee, and she gets 1 small scoop msm a day, and treats and carrots. She has finally gained weight. She was very underweight when we got her. We don't have grass growing in her area because we live in NM and we can't really get grass to grow. Yes she does get taken to a few grassy spots, and weeds and anything she wants to snack on. She doesn't really get a ton of crap. Thanks for the video.

So true that a lot of people say that they have "figured it out". If someone says that to you, then you should automatically be suspicious. Plus it seems more fulfilling to be a part of a process, rather than just thinking you know everything and stopping there. That's boring!

i've never heard of baling oats or rye. generally it's chopped green but to course if left long stemmed. if rye or oats are baled dry aka straw the nutrient content changes to pure sugar. usually use timothy, orchard, yard grass mix. :)

I agree, small amounts ar best. I learned this the hard way. From that moment I made it my mission in live to educate myself on horse nutrition and all of my horses beneffited from it. I think it's really sad to see that people think that what they are doing is good for the horse when in fact they are totally wrecking their horses digestive system. I think it's a very underrated item with most horse owners.

What are your thoughts on Orchard Grass hay? It's pretty much the number 1 hay choice in the area. It's very hard to find oat hay or alfalfa. I know every bale seems to be different. Sweet grass in one, clover in another. It's the only hay we are feeding right now.

@lone67187 жыл бұрын
jolie2805 that's not a bad thing. The birds also get the bugs that might be hanging out in the poo, and that poo gets spread around, which is good for the soil and the grasses growing in the area. Free fertilizer spreaders.

Supplements are useful in certain situations depending on what the circumstances are. Horses that work hard might need a supplement to help with muscle or joint recovery where as a pasture or pleasure horse may need something different at times. If you feed a good quality, free choice hay, keep your pasture structured and, put out a mineral block and fresh water. You shouldn’t need to do any more. Over supplementing horses can be toxic to them. In many parts of the country soils are selenium deficient so adding a supplement here would be a circumstance that would call for supplementing. It’s important to educate yourself before dumping a bunch of supplants in your horses food. You could be doing more harm than good. Just like the pharmaceutical company’s. There’s a pill for everything and another pill to help with what that pill is doing! Crazy.... I think natural foods are great. Just as Rick said flaxseed, rice bran, rolled oats etc... all un processed do the job foods!
@baylisabin25038 жыл бұрын
Well don't you think that if you have a highly competitive performance horse, a joint supplement would be okay? I feed him the silver lining herb products (joint support and sometimes an immune support) but they seem to help him as he competes every weekend for college rodeo. He is out 99% of the time and feed him outside in the pasture but do you think a the supplements I'm using for my performance horse are fine?

you can your pasture grass tested to see what in it and what's missing. You can also vary the supplements on and off and keep all diet changes very minor but vary hay you throw out. I feed alfalfa a few times a week, not a lot my tow guys get to share one flake/biscuit and they get a hand full of oat and corn maybe once a day or every other day, some carrots, apples, maybe they share one sweet potato between them a few times a month, buddy likes a little banana when I eat one, and I give some Red Cell very little once a week or so, some flax seed some time some sunflower seed some time.

Okay, my dear friend, Rick, this isn't horse related, but it has to do with your barn witch issues, but have you ever read "THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE" by Stephen Crane in high school? Well, Stephen Crane wrote a little quote called "THINK AS I THINK", I did, and I liked it, so I thought I'd share it with you. "Think as I think" said a man (woman), "or you are abominably wicked. You are a toad." and after I had thought of it, I said, "I will then, be a toad." Doesn't that just speak volumes to you, inasmuch as Barn witches go, and anybody else who tries to tell you their way is only "right way" to do anything. Trust me, you've taught me so much, and I don't even have a horse. Keep up the good work, and tell your critters hello for me.
