you people realize that if these movies were like real life the movie would last like 5 hours with exposition..you can't show the slow subtle signs of infection, there isn't enough time to do differential diagnosis.... all that can get explained visually by projectile vomiting or explosive diarrhea.. it doesnt have to be factual, they just have to get the point across.

I went through the unit NBC defense course in the Army and we had a guy who'd studied with the CDC who happened to be nearby and who came over. We focused on nuclear and chemical weapons mostly, but he went over biological issues and back then, before 9/11, he nailed EXACTLY what would happen in an outbreak that went nationwide. He even nailed the divisions along party lines as to how each side of the aisle would handle things, the breakdown in the supply chain, even the refusal of people to wear protective gear and refusal to acknowledge the problem at all. I wish I could find him today to tell him how impressed I am that he called the current situation over 20 years in advance
@mehere80382 жыл бұрын
Out of interest did he say anything about how other countries would respond? Really curious if he did & how close he got on them, did he predict how China would respond with really heavy handed tactics for example? How about Australia/NZ, did he predict the heavy quarantine & doing ok? I'm guessing he probably would have with all that stuff, more interesting might have been what he thought the UK would do, especially being pre-brexit & when their government was more competent & less divisive than it was by the time the pandemic happened. EU I'm guessing he also would have picked with the nationalism over supplies etc happening
@nazirkazi2588 Жыл бұрын

My favourite on that was the tv doctors who were doing interviews with masks around their necks & other PPE on for show, while sitting in their office within the hospital. That was during the supply shortages, so that PPE wasn't put on for the interview, it was stuff they had been wearing in covid wards, but then left the ward & walked all the way to their office still wearing, so as to do the interview on tv, as the "expert" on infectious diseases. Corridors between wards is bad enough, but offices are normally in completely different sections of the hospital & it would have been SO easy for them to have removed the PPE to prevent contaminating the entire path they took! Meanwhile in Australia, all press conferences & interviews with doctors were conducted outdoors, with good ventilation & the professionals wearing no PPE for effect, just wearing regular clothes or whatever was actually appropriate for the job they were doing at the time, no attempts to make them look "credible" in stereotypical clothing, they just used their words & scientific facts & stats to give that impression without the need for props & every transmission case prior to mass vaccinations being completed was traced in Australia, a couple happened in hospitals & there was serious consequences for those involved. I hate to think how many transmission cases happened in American hospitals!

I mean, it's depressing in how bad the reality of managing an outbreak under a anti science political agenda is. You can't repeatedly cut the funding of your pandemic response, and then desperately try and downplay a pandemic because you're afraid of not getting reelected if, like, pandemic things happen and expect the CDC to be able to do its job. All the things he's talking about, he simply failed to take into account that the CDC can only be as effective as they are allowed by the state.

To be fair, in E.T, decontamination _before_ entering the room is also required. Not to keep the crew safe, but to keep _E.T._ safe. Who knows what Earthborne pathogens can do to an alien?

When it comes to Zombie movies and infections I pretty much always write it off as heart rate. If it's a blood thing, the bite happens then when the infection enters the system and it gets transported throughout the body via the blood, with an increased heart rate the infection will travel faster to the heart and brain. Which is why they usually turn so fast. High stress situation = even faster heart rate.

I suppose he was thinking of all the implications. While viruses are not living things on their own, finding an ET virus would prove that life exists elsewhere. Just this would be mind blowing. Would they be carbon based? What are they coding for. Can these viruses be studied in order to better fight our own... he is mind blown by the number of new fields of research that could be opened in one stroke. Imagine him at 30 :-) enthusiastic, dedicated and full of energy. He might have clapped his hands in wonder or even delight.

Contagion is one of those movies that really freaked me out during the start of the pandemic because of how coincidental the spread of that disease in that movie was to how the corona virus was.
@ezequielmondada64273 жыл бұрын
The virus of the movie was in fact a coronavirus
@JT295013 жыл бұрын
@@ezequielmondada6427 No, I think it was based on the Nipahvirus. Similar though! But definitely not the same - note all the encephalitis type symptoms prominent in Contagion. Also, the disease in Contagion was quite a bit deadlier than our current pandemic. There's loads of stuff that the movie predicts very well though, like the focus on false cures, the panic in the general population, and the race for a vaccine (although that bit is a little bit Hollywood, when she injects herself to test the vaccine and that ONE person is enough to get it put into use, that wouldn't happen.. although I do think our high standards of efficacy and safety would be lowered the more deadly the disease we face. In fact I'd hope so! Imagine a virus escapes that kills 80% of the people it infects... if that happened, we shouldn't wait too long for clinical trials, we'd be desperate to try anything).
@ezequielmondada64273 жыл бұрын
@@JT29501 yea I didn't compared the virus of the movie to be the real one, I think they say it was a coronavirus inspired in the coronavirus know at that times the virus of SARS and MERS, and the other paragraph yes I totally agree with you.(Sorry if I write wrong English is not my first language).
@JT295013 жыл бұрын
@@ezequielmondada6427 Yeah, the deadliness of the virus in Contagion is definitely similar to SARS or MERS. It's interesting how generally viruses seem to need to find a sweet spot between deadliness and contagiousness to kill lots and lots of people! Of course that isn't guaranteed going forward but it does seem to be useful as a general rule of thumb. And don't worry, your English is great!
