We dose our calves before they head out. Vets used to try to say that vecoxan was just a treatment and not a preventative. We’ve not had any cases since.

Hope the vet is spot on when it comes to cause and treatment, I'm sure you will get it handled. A big job made a lot easier with a good handling system. Poor bulls, so much joy to be had, and then the legs don't wanna play ball.

Hi Crawford, great video. I have seen cocidia here unfortunately a good few times. Came with bought in calves. It seems the osysys (eggs) stay in the ground some animals don’t get it others do unfortunately. I dose mine at time of purchase now. Test regularly too. My veg has said the vecosan/ tolracol is like a vaccine. It basically isn’t a treatment. So best to use an antibiotic and anti inflammatory on the sytomatic ones. I’ve even seen it raise its head on year and half ones. A few years ago I had one bullock who had to have an epidural to treat it. It’s an awful thing. My thinking would be treat as a preventative before turn out. Hope they recover. Best wishes from Ireland Crawford. 0:02

Cheers for the reply. Hope it helps in some way. It’s a horrible thing. You have some smashing calves. I think the worst thing about it is they deteriorate so fast once blood appears. Farmer P has lost some young calves with it this year in his shed. It’s so prevalent.

You can get it put in the mineral buckets with vet prescription, we used to do that with ewes and lambs and never had a problem lot less work to!

We used to always get coccy, started moving cows more often and grazing the grass alittle longer and it all went away

over the last few years we’ve lost a number of calves to coxi and some not that young (after they’ve been weaned etc) and the most of them never got out to grass so weather it’s in the straw/sheds 🤷‍♂️

Cocci isn't only at grass as you get it with housed cattle also, the problem may have been kicked off with the various groups of cows you have bought and hence moved into new surroundings and new bugs from different herds.

We dose all our calves with Baycox. It's a nightmare to deal with it not caught in time. We find large groups are more prone too so we split them up

@@CrawfordsFarm1 Baycox is great we had bad experience with Vacoxin it was "scrap" according to my dad. Had to treat a sick calf with Noridine recently. We've always had to manage coxy and were glad to see you getting away with it for so long without an outbreak it's a real B*****d. Baycox has got very hard to find in our local vet unfortunately but it works well treated at a month old
