Disease Resistant Apple Trees - Family Plot

There are over 5000 varieties of apple, and some are better suited to home gardens due to disease resistance. Retired UT Extension Agent Mike Dennison outlines 14 varieties that are resistant to the major diseases of apple: apple scab, fire blight, Juniper rust (cedar apple rust), and powdery mildew. You won’t see these varieties in the grocery store because they are not the popular varieties, which tend to be susceptible to these diseases. Even if the trees are resistant to these diseases, you should still spray because there are many other disease and insect problems. The disease resistance of these trees can help the homeowner if a spray is missed.

Ask your county agent what diseases apple trees face in your area. Some parts of the US have no apple rust problems, others are terrible that way. Same with fire blight, although most folks must deal with it to some degree. Enterprise is pollen parent to Cosmic Crisp. One must sign forms saying you won't sell the apples or propagate the tree if you want Cosmic Crisp (which seed parent is Honeycrisp, a terrible tree in my experience). Liberty has more flavor than Freedom, but tends to attract codling moths (certainly did for me). Pristine is more popular than Prima, to the best of my knowledge. William's Pride can develop sunburned fruit & water core - great for cider blends, no good for keeping; use/eat it at once. If rusts aren't an issue, GoldRush is one of the best apples you can grown & enjoy, for so many reasons.

I have a 5 in 1 apple tree. Where 3 are not as resistant but 2 are very resistant to diseases on the same tree. I wonder if all 5 apple varieties on this tree will be resistant? Or just the 2?

Commercial varieties ARE NOT chosen based on taste. They are chosen on apple appearance, reliability and heaviness of cropping. It is not “a great idea”, to release more chemicals into the environment if you don’t need to. Not sure these guys know much about the topic, simply reading out the conclusions of someone else’s report...

I am not sure. The ones we discussed are available in the US and probably Canada. See if there is an online nursery in your country. They would probably have the largest selection.

I grow several of these and generally am disappointed with the flavor, except maybe William's Pride.

williams pride is a good apple of mine i grow as well. i like a little tart. learn how to start grafting. russet apples are very good. there are many great older apples around. find out what some of them are in your local area. these will probably do very good since they have been around for generations with little care. i do not like macs or many of the super market apples types. commercial growers are way less focused on flavor then a home owner. a few well timed sprays and you can grow some amazing tasting apples.
