The Y2K scare revolved around the impending outmoding of computer systems around the world. Many software and operating systems were programed using a two-digit date display for the year and the primary concern was that when the year ticked over to 2000 systems would register it as "00" which could lead to logic errors leading to potential crashes. The hysteria was sparked largely by a general ignorance of technology and fears that systems which controlled important infrastructure such as power and utilities could be compromised and fail. Some people even went so far as to theorize nuclear weapons might inadvertently launch or detonate. At the very least people were expecting finances and public institutions to be affected but thanks to the hard work of programmers at the time updates were pushed out in quick order to prevent any such interruptions. I too remember being a kid around this time, and while I understood the context to it all, the hysteria was a bit much to me. I didn't have much concept in regards to infrastructure and civil services, but at the time we were not nearly as reliant on computers. A lot was still done with analog methods and the digital age was taking off but still had a long way to go towards making the transition that we see today.
@HellNaught5 сағат бұрын
I understood the premise... but it made no sense to me... like they could have manually changed the dates on specific systems preemptively to test if they would crash... or anything really suspect could have been reset if they were worried about that rollover number injecting itself in another block of digits
@Kamenari373 сағат бұрын
@HellNaught like I said, computer illiteracy at the time compounded people's panic about the whole ordeal. Most people had no idea what the Y2K scare was about, they just knew some people were panicked and so they followed suit. The issue was never really how to fix the issue, but how to do it in time for the new year for all the systems that would require it. It was a matter of how much money would be lost on account of a technical oversight and what ripple effects it would have at large. We were not quite so reliant on technology of the digital age like we are now, but it was taking over a lot of things people depended on out of convenience.

Nothing huge happened with me that New Year's Eve. But I was working as a manager at Subway that night to close, then an officer came in and asked me how I was doing, and I said I'm fine, then he said "Just so you know, they got us all out there tonight, so if you need us just give us a call." I said okay, and then he left. Then when I got home, I watched a South Park marathon and they ended with a South Park NYE countdown. I'm sure it's on KZbin already now if you wanna check it out.

After early career smash hits such as "Grease" and "Saturday Night Fever" in the 70s, John Travolta's career experienced a major critical and commercial dip in popularity during the 80s and early 90s, but then he rebounded big in 1994 with the success of "Pulp Fiction," which caused him to explode again in popularity. He remained a big star for the rest of the 90s, going on to headline six more films that broke $100 million at the box office (a big deal at the time) over the course of the next five years, and he got top billing in all of them. ...then his career tanked again in 2000 when he starred in (and produced) "Battlefield Earth." 🤣

John Travolta’s career was “revived” not long before this with Pulp Fiction. However in 2000 it would go back down the shitter with Battlefield Earth. I don’t remember seeing his name a lot after other than romcoms. The Fanatic is unintentionally hilarious in The Room kind of way I highly recommend getting drunk with friends and watching it

Basically Y2K was the idea that computers would crash or cause issues because most of them would process 2000 as 1900 due to only using two digits to store the year in some software. Most companies were aware of this in advance and had updated by the mid-90s, though some things weren't updated for a few days after the event itself. US spy satellites, a few nuclear reactors flagged false alarms because they thought they had been running for 100 years, and someone was charged a 100 year overdue parking ticket. We're due to have another issue in 2038, as 32-bit systems are only designed to keep dates till then. And they'll need replaced with 64-bit ones.

@Robby_CКүн бұрын
I think the issue was that people weren't sure how the computers would handle having "00" as a year in programs that were coded with two digit years instead of four digit years, or something like that. I guess there were actually some systems effected by it, but nothing widespread or important enough to cause any issues.

Fun Fact about Dysfunctional: While touring movie sites on a vacation, Dysfun was standing in the House from Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Looking around, he openly proclaimed that this would be a great looking family restaurant or cafe location. It became a family restaurant, however remembering what Dysfun said, an investor decided to try a cafe. So it became in 2012, the house from the 1974 Texas Chainsaw film became Grand Central Cafe.

I remember Y2K a lot of people talking about it but never saw anyone do anything out of the ordinary. My parent and family in pretty everyone in general that I knew didn’t buy in to that histeria just remember it the same as any NY parent and neighbors have a small get together countdown with champagne and you could see and hear a lot of fire works around the town.
