I remember the first time I watched the episode, I couldn't assimilate the idea about Rick having true feelings of love, about that he really loved and cared for someone and he had a heart to be broken, my mind was in the verge of collapse. Then my bro told me something that cleared my mind and has a lot of sense related to Rick's psyche and nature: everything is a game, a bet for him; being with Unity was a game where he couldn´t get easily bored, Unity leaving is like the game stopped before he could ended it first, that's why he got depressed. And that has sense if you think in Rick as a narcisist.

@Angie F ...except he does have feelings for Unity. He is attracted to them because it is powerful. But even moreso, they connect. Rick _is_ a godly level being who finds a match in power and fun, it's a hive mind who is able to get lost in him as if he's the one assimilating people. He even says it when the kids leave, only referring to his dynamic with the kids. "They put you at the center of their lives because they think you're powerful...", and unity also expresses the getting lost thing in the notes. Rick was having a good time with someones who were having a good time with him. But that doesn't always hash out. You can really love someone, and they can really love you. But you can also be the worst things for each other. Literal textbook definition of a codependent toxic relationship. He's sad because he knows he is a cruddy, what's that word, "human"? He *knows* thie, it's even a repeated theme. At that point at the end, he _was_ suffering. The little dude he zapped is implied to be frozen in the same state, and Rick tries to comfort it in it's final moments before he mercy-ends it reflecting on what he is about to attempt, himself. Heck, even the liquid literally thawed out the creature, and then Rick drank it to "thaw out" himself. More symbolic attempt than literal, but it's all there. You were right the first time. Rick does love her. Or a piece of him does, anyway. He is not *incapable* of loving someone. I think it's also a copout to just label Rick a narcissist and therefore only capable of loving himself. That's a vast oversimplification into a pretty decently nuanced character. Like, I'd probably be pretty nihilistic and narcissistic, too, if I'm literally the only human alive using nonsense I threw together in a garage to make interdimensional travel... into a portal shooter. Not to mention the other accomplishments. It's like when people say, "just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean people aren't after you...." Don't let people talk you out of dropping an opinion just because you don't like the thought. Especially, when you're correct.

@@cctomcat321 I respect your opinions and feelings, but remember that everyone else has the right to think and feel different. Even you say it at the end of your comment. And to make clear, I am not saying that I didn't like this episode, quite the contrary, is one of my favourites. Why? for many reasons, even like I said, I was in the collapse because I was becoming empathic to Rick's situation, everyone who has dated or tried to connect with someone who considers to be "the one" could empathize with him. And as a personal advice, one can feel many things for Rick: empathy, hate, friendship, making him a hero, a villain, etc, etc, but whatever one does: please don't fall in love with him. (like they said about Madonna in the beginning of the musical video Beautiful Stranger)
