Disgaea for me, especially in Disgaea 2, was more about messing around with the generic characters and weapon skills. Taking a witch and having her beat up everyone with punches and swords lol. I grind the item world sure, but I don’t need the main characters for that. When I played Disgaea 6 and spent about 2 hrs with no new skills, I felt betrayed. I still beat the story and some of the post game bosses, but naah. I went back to Disgaea 5! Best time.

I'm buying but I doubt any new feature is going to top the Overload skill system in D5 that made each main hero unique.

I liked the idea of Jumbification. It definitely made 7 stand out in its own way. It felt somewhat imbalanced at times, of course, but does not Disgaea always feel like that sometimes? It's not going to be in 8, it's obviously one of those features that define a title in the series but won't carry over to the next one.

All the while having a 2 year old on top of that. I’m glad I had an early start on covering this game. more companies need to do what NIS does and give outlets and creators time to cover their games and not be a here’s a 100+ hour game that you have 1-2 days to cover before it releases

What Jumbification needs is unique abilities. Personally it has the potential to rival FF16'S Eikons with the idea of a Godzilla like abilities on/off the battlefield but the single melee punch doesn't sell the best feature of the gimmick. Or better yet imagine a Giant SuperRobo Suit boss with a Prinny Pilot or Flonne's SuperRobot as a boss. A Giant Makai Kingdom Tank. It has so much potential it's insane it's wasted.

Sounds to me like it's time to return to the Franchise then! 6... 6 and me did not get along in the slightest. I am happy to hear that this sounds more like a reboot/return to form. I put so much time into 4 and 5, 2 is still my favorite in terms of story and I would love to get 2 again, but with the QoL of the modern games (And maybe a return to the pixel graphics!) jumbofication is more than just making characters large, it changes mechanics as well depending on what character you use.

I played the first Disgaea in high school and played every one since then - EXCEPT 6. When i read that 6 dumbed it down and tried to have more mass appeal, and just the reviews in general- I felt so let down , so i skipped it. So glad 7 is not a dud! I been looking forward to this and will be buying it the first day it comes out. Then I'm taking my phone off the hook and disappearing off the face of the earth for a month, gonna get smoked out and grind in my favorite game series each day after work. This game is so dope and the apotheosis of a tactics game. Just like in pokemon, I'm going to box my starter and never evolve it. Instead opting to make monstrously strong generic units, rather than focusing on the story characters (since that's NOT they way I'm supposed to do it.) And that just makes it more fun. Play it your way. Thanks for the awesome review!

Quick note on the evilities, they don’t differentiate between skill exp and regular exp. So be sure to check the character out on a map to find out which is which.

Man maybe I’m biased but you gotta play some of the older games. Disgaea 1 and 2 are goated. I’ve played all of the Disgaea games besides 7, and most of them multiple times and always finish the post-game, I’ve played 1 and 2 the most and I can say that 1, 2, and 4 are all top-tier in my opinion. 5 streamlined away so many fun and meaningful mechanics, while 6 streamlined away every meaningful mechanic. 3 and D2 are a bit more experimental with a few things and they ended up okay, but not quite as well tuned as those three. Maybe I’m just not suited to the current direction of the newer games, but old school NIS games are great. Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom were so cool and innovative. All I can say is don’t play Disgaea PC it’s not that good a port. Disgaea DS is really cool and has the most content I’d say with the added prinny mode, mini map, and QOL improvements, but Disgaea complete has the most QOL and doesn’t cut out the voice dialogue like the DS port does. Either way, Disgaea PC doesn’t have the QOL improvements and feels kind of slow and tedious compared to the other versions I’ve played.

I've been a fan of the series since the original on PS2, racked up a couple hundred hours on that version, then also on the PSP version - the Nintendo DS version and finally thr PC version - Let's hope they go back and release Disgaea 3 and D2 on PC to complete the set. I have my Steam deck setup to emulate a PS3 to play them anyway - FWIW I do have them both on a PS3 anyway of course. Once I install number 7 on my deck that'll be all of them on it. I also love the Persona series and 3,4 and 5 are on the deck as well. Portable bliss.

Checking this out now. Really enjoyed the series up until 6, so its good to see I wasnt the only one who didnt enjoy it. The problem for me was the challenge was completely broken and allowed you to auto level and completely break the challenge of the game. Disgaea were never the hardest strat games but atleast offered some satisfaction and resistance. A reason to engage with some of the sub systems like the item world, etc. Turn based strategy are one of my favorite genres, but cant enjoy them unless they are challenging. (I dont play them for the story)

@@MekelKasanova A few things. For a specific example, them using censored cover art for Disgaia 7 when they revealed it just rubbed me the wrong way. As for less specific things, I find they hire some of the least professional translators in the industry. Some of the lines changes that they made to Trails Into Reverie are so cringy that I can’t believe they allowed it to release as is.

Sound popping issues on ps5 after game is played for a period. Only way to stop is close game and reload. Others have had this in previous Disgaea games. Hope its cleared up its annoying.

I hate to say it but disgaea 7 is another disappointment. Fuji/MC has only 2 unique skill! (Not counted the hell mode skill) And fuji last skill a very underwhelming! He just jump high and kick the ground and it destroyed the ground itself damaging all enemies around. Where ia the over the top planet/solar system destroying skill like in disgaea 5?!!

In the case of Disgaea, it's Disugaia in Japanese, where "a" is always pronounced as in "apple" and "i" always as in "image". It's then di-su-ga-i-a.
