Broken bridge, deep pit, or most egregious of all, "object in the way" such as a rockslide or, most insulting of all, knee-high boxes are all just developer shorthand for "We are either just showing off an environment you aren't meant to go to" or "We need to add some more gameplay/story here so you can't just go past" in every game. It's worst in games where FLYING is an option long before you get to such points but OBVIOUSLY you can't fly over their important PLOT! I genuinely had a gm on tabletop try to use the 'broken bridge' trick and he was quite off-put when we simply cut down trees to cross.
@Melth7 ай бұрын
To some extent it's probably a necessary evil in videogames where (unless it's an open world game) the developers do need to put up fences of some kind. But they could certainly have made the fences more logical! In the shar temple, maybe we just run into a floor to ceiling rockfall in what we've already learned is an area that could collapse if we messed around with it. And in the mountain pass, they should have just not created that tiny broken bridge at all! It serves no purpose other than to show us how pointlessly we're being forced into going to the shadow cursed lands
@Chronische7 ай бұрын
@@Melth Or using magical barriers, or simply not showing it as an otherwise traversable path if there wasn't something as puny as a broken bridge, repairable with literally a cantrip once you join the rope together.
@Melth7 ай бұрын
@@Chronische yeah, though magical barriers might make us start asking things like "why doesn't dispel magic (I know it's not actually in the game) fix this?"
@Chronische7 ай бұрын
@@Melth The caster's too high level, so you can't undo it, obviously! It was cast as a 10th level spell, or whatever excuse you want to use, is still better than "My character, who can leap 80' without harm, and knows Featherfall among other spells or magical abilities, can't go down to grab a rope or cross a comically short chasm distance." Magical reasons are easier to handwave than mundane ones that are so simple that even WITHOUT magic you could resolve them in a relatively short time.
@Melth7 ай бұрын
@@Chronische I agree, magic would be a better explanation, but it can certainly also feel arbitrary and call more attention to the barrier than just having it make physical and narrative sense (when that's possible)

By the way, The kobold's that were not surprised, were not surprised because they got into the fight in the middle. They are inside the Firewine barrels and when you explode them they appear.
@Melth7 ай бұрын
That's half the answer- but in general in this game if you join a battle in which some of your teammates were surprised, YOU get surprised too. The kobolds from the barrels seem to be a special exception to that.
@yhnujmik987Ай бұрын
The General doesn't actually have a safe path to temple because of the Sharran spirits in there; that's why Balthazar's progress in there is slow. He and his minions keep getting attacked. So, it makes some sense to send Nere and see if an approach from this direction would allow them easier access to the Nightsong.
@MelthАй бұрын
That only superficially makes sense though, because the path to Nere's side involves long stretches that the cult doesn't control either AND there's no reason Shar can't summon her teleporting spirits at that side of the temple if she wants to.

Since I am dealing with Nathaniel before doing the Sharran Temple, I have to remember to buy Balthasar's Potion of Speed. It is a rare game that allows you to trade with NPCs that are on the opposing side, so you can do disarming tactics like this. It is really beneficial because you get a Potion of Speed which is a good item to buy anyways, while preventing him from using it.

Always on board for Melth owning Honor Mode :) Question for the community. Does anyone else wish there were a way to respawn/create new fights later on in the game? Once I get my cool build online, just about everything is dead :/ It would be fun to fight some leveled up gnolls, or even have the ability to spawn enemies in. 2 Raphaels and a fleet of iron hands at the gate to the Emerald Grove, please!
@Melth7 ай бұрын
I agree I think- I mentioned before that I think in some areas (particularly ones that are meant to *feel* dangerous like the Shadow-Cursed Lands), it might be good if there were some respawning wandering monsters. They could give no XP/reward so as to make it better to avoid them and make the area feel dangerous and encourage stealth. And of course, they would be ideal for people who want more battles!

Hey Melth: what is the heavy armor in act 2 that you prefer over the adamantine splint mail? If I go heavy armor, I always keep that until act 3. The only one I can think of would be dwarven splint mail ??
@Melth7 ай бұрын
Dwarven Splint Mail is definitely better than adamantine for most purposes, and is available almost right away. Also, you start finding multiple medium armors immediately which let you add your full dexterity to AC. Those outclass adamantine completely if your Dexterity is good. And Dexterity is the most important stat in the game; it should be good on every character. Once you hit level 9 (which for me is about 1/3 of the way into act 2), any generic merchant will also sell Splint Armor +2 which is also arguably better than adamantine.

Forgotten Realms having racial pantheons is pretty redundant, I agree. Outside of a god whose only thing is 'patron of X race', you'd think the others just guises of the other gods. That IS the case sometimes - Talos in particular likes to pretend to be other cultures/races gods to gain another foothold of divine power. Especially if he can successfully pretend to be a god of some domain he doesn't actually control, since even a foothold can give him a measure of control of the portfolio!
@Melth7 ай бұрын
It's a weird narrative decision. It might be meant to tie in with the old d&d idea that high level adventurers become gods, and any race eventually has a few high level adventurers or something. But they don't really play up that aspect, and instead the dead 3 are almost the only gods whose status as former adventurers is emphasized. In which case, what narrative purpose does it serve to have like 10 gods apiece for 1000 races? And wouldn't it make more sense if they mostly worshipped the same gods of various portfolios, etc
