I mean, illusionist wizard and trickery cleric together with creation bard are OP roleplaying break game stars as long as the dm dont try to 'auto investigate' everytime they try an illusion even if is not reasonable for the npc to question what they are seeing (which a lot of dms automatically do which is why few people use them)

I make an illusion of a dragon to fear them? Yeah, the bandits know it's an illusion cuz.......??? Reasons. Ya cast an illusion of a wall? One of the NPCs just so happens to be mindlessly dragging his hand on the wall and spots ur illusion

I've definitely built a rogue with this in mind. Every skill trained, as much expertise as possible, and the rogue feature that don't let you roll below a 10. You can basically auto succeed on an easy-medium skill checks and auto succeed on many skills with hard skill checks

Not super sure what a roleplay optimiser is exactly but can say that Mask of Many Faces is crazy fun for giving additional 'character' to your PC. Like if your PC spams Disguise Self, do they do it for playful reasons like teasing their team or trying out 'new looks'? Or is it due to something more serious like gender/identity dysphoria, avoiding prejudice, being on the run, etc? And if they're more cautious in their use of it, why is that? Keeping their ability to look like anyone else at will a secret because they think its dangerous to let knowledge they have this ability spread and/or they dislike 'wasting' magic/their patreon's gift to them? They get some kind of dysphoria or shift in personality (playing the role) when using it sometimes? Or maybe they're strictly a 'disguises are for the job only' type who's prefers to be honest in presentation outside work hours? XD So many fun ways to tie MoMFs into RP

Notable thing with changing gender or (to a degree) race, disguise self doesn’t change your voice. I had fun with that as a warlock using the invocation in a solo game session where I was a female elf imitating a male dwarf and had to communicate with grumbling and gestures because my voice would have given me away immediately.

I already love this spell, but always hesitated to take it for small creatures. I never thought of using stilts. That's very clever! Common item: **Stilts** Sturdy adjustable wooden stilts made for the circus. While being worn you cannot dash, you have disadvantage on dexterity saving throws to avoid effects and damage, and your height increases between 2 to 5 ft.

Everyone sells this spell short. You can look like topiary, like a fire elemental, like an anthropomorphic pile of ice and snow. We're playing "Rime of the Frost Maiden" and my Hexbuckler uses Disguise Self to blend in all the time. Don't forget that the spell grants partial invisibility. I once used it to bypass a group of undead by looking like a skeleton.

Small combat adjacent trick for disguise self: because you can disguise your equipment, you can make it appear as though you have full plate when you know you’re going to face off against enemies that seek the softest target. Alternatively, disguise your plate armor as robes and entice them into targeting a significantly higher AC.

In my table some smarter enemy will go "Kill the mage first!". So our warlock will often disguise as archer or a guy with plate armor.

Another thing is that Plasmoids can have any arrangement of limbs they want, so disguise Self can be used to look like *anything* you want. A Small Plasmoid with stilts is the optimal Disguise Self using build.

It's funny you mention Waterdeep and kobolds, in my group's Tyranny of Dragons campaign that just wrapped up earlier this year we ended up turning a DMPC kobold character into a clan leader who established her own warren of kobolds under the city, and due to our party (who, you know, saved the world and all) advocating for the kobolds we got the city council to agree to allow them to live there, and Hup (said DMPC kobold) set up a training ground for kobolds to learn trades as well as opening a store to sell things (she was an armorer artificer so she set up a armor store). Sorry to ramble I just loved that campaign and wanted to gush about kobolds.

Back in the 3.5 days I played a Changeling rogue with a Hat of Disguise. I'd disguise myself with my Changeling shapechange ability, and then again with the Hat. I called it "Putting a hat on a hat". If someone managed to see through the Disguise Self, I was _still_ disguised; almost nobody ever suspects a person using a Hat of Disguise of _also_ being a Changeling. Edit: I forgot a step. First, change my appearance with Changeling shapechange; second, wear a mundane disguise with my Disguise skill; then third, Disguise Self with the Hat. _Three_ layered disguise! I remember the time in Critical Role Campaign 2 when Fjord used Mask of Many Faces to disguise himself in that one city. He just made himself look like himself, but comically buff.

I like this with the new Great Old One warlock, since it removes all components. Just step behind something, and walk out as a different person with no one knowing anything is off. You also don't have to disguise yourself as a person; you just need to have the "same basic arrangement of limbs." So you could kneel down on all fours and turn into a chair, or just try to be very still and turn into a statue. You could even get into a fetal position and try to look like a pile of refuse, hoping they don't notice the oddly uniform arrangement.

Disguise Self is hard-countered by a simple pat-down, and Detect Magic. Any secure facility would screen all visitors. A Disguise Kit has no such weakness.

My two favorite personal Disguise Spells: Disguise Self and Alter Self. Two spells for two separate purposes. One-Just to pass through an area, or hide your real face/gain entry into an area etc... The other for more on-hand espionage that you are highly likely to be physically touched and you don't want to risk an illusion being seen/felt through. Anytime I have a character that does focus on disguises magically (Even a magical rogue which would also have a third option for a physical makeup/costume disguise with no magic), those are my two go-to spells!

I love Disguise Self. Even more when im a Warlock. One of my Fav combos is Mask of Many Faces with Master of Myriad Forms so i can cast Disguise Self and Alter self at will. Alter self for the looks and Disguise self to adept the clothes to the looks. Combine that with the Actor Feat on level 4 and maybe also take the Misty Vision Invocation for at will Silent image and you turn into the Djini from Aladin. It's a lot of fun to fool around with all that.

one time we were sneaking into a kobold lair where they were accustomed to seeing dragon born come and go, so our DB joined the halfling bard and me (a tiefling wizard) to try to get past a patrol while our rogue was stealthing around the other way. i cast DS to look like another dragon born and the bard made himself up as a kobold. we got almost all the way past them when one asked us a question, only for us to realize i was the only one who spoke draconic and we nearly got caught. we only got away when the bard made an illusion of a gnome and the kobolds all ignored us to attack it.

a fun combo with this is also with spells like friends or charm person, basically eliminates the repercussions of casting them, could easily impersonate another npc and use friends to redirect the ire on to them, depending on the situation can also get information, items or get an immediate favor. Im in a campaign rn where my character is an escaped bioweapon experiment Disguise self is literally the only reason i have been able to walk around any public spaces and it creates very tense situations since when i have the spell up, the entire group is on a timer. Under normal circumstances most fights are very easy for us to deal with as a lot of the group are very powerful but two of us (my character being one of them) often are not able to fight at full strength due to contextual conditions that restrict our ability to use it just from the simple need keep as low a profile as we can as often as possible andnit has lead to some extremely interesting narrative developments

One of the best disguises for combat is an imp. Nobody is going to bother using poison, fire or hold person on you. And if you have your own imp, good luck figuring out which one is the real one. Gaze of Two Minds can really mess with people when you cast spells from your imp's place.

I love using mask of many faces. If you take Marid pact you get fog cloud, which I think is a cute tactic if a bunch of guards show up. Also, if you did a whole party of mask of many face users one of them should be a moon Druid.

Great video! Fun and informative. Hang in there though, between views and merch, we'll get you that fursuit money! The bit about killing the goblins is kind of a problem with D&D. I try to ensure that potentially non-hostile factions have far more valuable information than material resources. If the players decide to kill all the goblins, they might get some extra loot and experience up front. But if they befriend the goblins and persuade them to coexist peacefully, they may curry favor with nearby factions and be able to ask favors of them. I know it's a combat game primarily, but I really wish more emphasis was put on role play and campaigns would suggest scaling, modular rewards with non-combat successes. For example, if the characters have a Bastion, they could be rewarded with NPCs who may add to their Bastion, depending on where they go and who they interact with. Maybe the party who kills the goblins gets a discount on hiring soldiers from the guard, but the group that befriends them earns the companionship of a goblin artisan who joins them. That kind of thing rewards player choice, and helps customize the campaign while not placing a large creative burden on the DM.

My favourite use of disguise self was when i turned a murder my character caused into a comedy skit as i turned a corner after slowing the cops down with grease then used disguise self to hide myself as a mercenary i killed a week earlier and the guards looked at me asked me where he went i pointed left and beat the deception check
