I think you missed a little part from AOTC, it was actually the very first time actual light from the blades were used on set, this was in segment from the Dooku vs Anakin fight in Geonosis, when they enter in a very dark area, the scene uses the glow to iluminate their faces and make visual representation of the dark vs light through the color glow reflections in their faces according to George Lucas.

Was about to comment that, but to be fair I don't recall if they used the same kind of LED sabers.

@@raymundotoledo4175 It wasn't the same kind of LED sabres, no. For the most part they used thin metal poles for the actual blades.

The blades pre sequel trilogy look so much better and otherworldly because of the fact they don't cast the light onto the actors, the new technology feels like they're playing with toys, not an ancient deadly weapon. I think this is also an issue with the choreography too.

Honestly I think the fact they cast light now is a major improvement, though RoS screws it up making Rey use it like a flashlight

I agree prequel era lightsabers look the best to me as well. I hate how they no longer look stable or have the solid white center. They don’t use the same sounds anymore either.

It’s good to see an objective take on the sequel trilogy here…..so much out there focuses on what’s wrong it’s refreshing to see focus on something that is done right.

I didn’t necessarily like some things in the sequel trilogy, but I’m so sick of all the negativity in the Star Wars fandom when it comes to those films. There are still really awesome things about those movies that Star Wars fans can appreciate, even if you didn’t like them over all. Unfortunately, I feel like a lot of great stuff with the sequels gets overlooked because of all the hate.
@KingofPotatoPeople

@@weirdpigeonproductions completely with you on that. There’s plenty of things I’m not keen about the sequel trilogy but you are so right about the lightsaber effects. There’s endless complaint about the Holdo manoeuvre (in the cinema and to this day I just assumed Luke was using the force to help make it work) but the effect of the attack in cinematography terms was superb. People moaning about the same old things that don’t really matter is boring. Your channel is a refreshing objective take on all aspects of Star Wars! And that’s a real achievement!

Something to add that I noticed is how the prop blades in general were dimmer in TFA compared to the Disney+ shows where they have them lit up similarly to the toy sabers we have these days. In TFA it’s like they knew they only wanted enough light to cast a glow on the actors but not cause over exposure whereas in the Disney+ shows they’re a bit too eager to play with the whole "scene lit by the lightsabers themselves" effect without considering the downsides to that.

Lightsabers can cut (almost) everything, they are no baseball bats which just bounce off anything and take 10 hits to kill a stormtrooper. They can just chop their limbs off in one go. I would rather have prequel lightsabers without the realistic lightning than having realistic lightning, but a less realistic sword made out of laser
@hiimchrisj
@hiimchrisj 11 ай бұрын
That’s more so an issue on the choreography level rather than the new blade props. They’ve always had physical poles in place of the lightsaber blade on set that would actually strike other objects on set rather than cut through them. The only difference is back in the day they were better at hiding it for whatever reason.

another thing that could've fixed it is if the blades were not so saturated in color, so there is enough RGB channel in the shot to avoid chroma clipping, provide information on color, so in post you can bring back skin tone and balance out the color saturation

My problem with lightsabres in Disney SW isn't just the over-exposure in projects like Kenobi, it's also with the ST and other shows. Not only is it not consistent with the sabres in Lucas' saga, but the sabres in those films were entities who had different physics, different rules to normal lasers and everything else, almost as an entity that exists in its own space, even though that in those films the lightsabres have limitations when it comes to their power. I think the sabres in Disney SW's projects lose this element, they're less mystical and more sci-fi-esque, as a standard laser from a blaster. The effects in the ST don't look bad at all, no, they look great, but it's not consistent IMO. Plus, as chrisval04 has pointed out in the comments, in AOTC during the duel between Anakin and Dooku you can see the sabres used and light sources, but sparingly. The sabres are supposed to emmit light, but they're not supposed to be straight up light sources in the same sense as a light bulb. They should also hire Nick Gillard back for the choreography.

I think there's still room for improvement in the technology. With the use of those Force FX prop glow swords, you can tell it's much heavier on the actors. On top of that, it seems the VFX team has been cutting corners and not rotoscoping, cause in the D+ shows (specially during the Order 66 flashbacks), you don't see the white core of the blade when they swing. You can tell they look like glowsticks. I think a good solve would be to go the prequel route with very thin rods, but have 'em light up for natural spill. Then rotoscope the blade in Post.
@bardockmou
@bardockmou Жыл бұрын
Not only that. As they use short glowstick, there are time that you can see that they dont fix "the shorter lightsaber" For example, in Mandalorian, when Luke destroy the droids, when Grogru and the others are watching the cameras, the blade is too short, but in others it has the correct lenght.

There's a reason why the lighting's like that in Obi-Wan Kenobi. The reason is to show that Kenobi is surrounded by darkness and his saber is the only light that he have against the darkness around him.

I hate Disney lightsabers. You can quite obviously tell they are LED toys. And don't even get me started on them bouncing off of things rather than cutting through like they are supposed to. Disney simply doesn't care enough to understand how a lightsaber should work.

The prequel lightsabers looked like pure light and heat because they stayed the same color no matter what the outside lighting was. The new sabers look like glow sticks the way they emit the light whereas the prequels are solid white and whatever the color of the blade is making it truly look like an elegant weapon.

I think your videos are some of the best and most well-reserched ones going on utube! I've been a Star Wars fan since 1977 and you come up with information that I've never heard before. I've got a topic that I've always wanted to hear more about, and I think you'd be the perfect person to cover it. There was a man who did ALL of the personal and press appearances as Darth Vader as well as being the man who posed for the famous original Factor Vader poster. (Oddly enough It wasn't Dave Prowse) BTW, he was also the one in the suit when they put their feet in cement at the Chinese Theater. It would be fascinating to learn more about that guy. He was a real unsung hero of the time. Well, that's just an idea for you. Your too young to be so brilliant! LOL! Good luck with everything you do in the future!

I actually really cant stand the new style of blades because it feels so out of place compared to the prequels and the OT, Like if this was a new series I could understand it but in the established universe we dont get color cast from the lightsabers unless its thematically important (see anakin vs dooku in Attack of the clones) I appreciate the vader scene as much as the next person but I think one of the characteristics of the disney era of star wars is that they have a tendency to overcorrect. people compained about the cgi and green screen in the prequels? well now its all shot in the volume and all the aliens are pratical despite the short comings of the exclusively pracical costumes and sets. I think if they work on a way to create a balance between all the technologies and find ways to keep the tradional effect of the lightsabers and then in very special circumstances they use the new blade style id be alot more onboard.
