@@na18sum Maul survived for 10 years in total solitude on a world with nothing but trash as far as the eye can see. Without being able to digest/utilise food and liquid properly, since he lacked his abdomen and thus the intestinal outlets, which means that it is almost a miracle that he did not die of blood poisoning and multiple organ failure after a short time. Hiking through the desert for days should be child's play in this context. Maul never was and never will be as powerfull as ROTS Anakin Skywalker and sure as hell nowere near Darth Vader in terms of actual power and skill.

"Outmatched"...stop it. Maul was definitely the better and overall more skilled duelist, but he was STILL to arrogant (like Anakin) and simply figured he had Obi-Wan figured out, and would easily beat him this last time, especially since Obi-Wan tool the same stance that Qui-Gon did when Maul killed him. Kenobi knew Maul would again be overconfident and took advantage of that to catch him off guard and kill him. He took advantage of Maul and Vader's lack of emotional control and arrogance to beat them, not his skills, which technically lagged behind the two Sith lords.

Bingo. Light side has force ghosts and speaking to the dead, healing, mind trick, and certain Jedi like Windu and Luke Skywalker can just straight up use the dark side without ill consequences if they're anchored enough. The light has almost always outnumbered the dark throughout Star Wars history, and every single major villain is generally defeated by someone who is on the Light side but equally as powerful. Current canon Luke straight up says the Light is more powerful and that the Sith teach straight up lies, which considering the Sith's high failure rate in successfully conquering the galaxy is not a really controversial statement. tldr the Dark side is overrated, the cookies are a lie, everyone hates you, and you have as much life expectancy as a Sith Lord as you do storming the beaches of Iwo Jima with a flamethrower on your back

However, I'd much rather spend time with this older Obi-Wan in Kenobi series era--more emotionally in touch with himself/no longer espousing the "no attachments" mantra, empathetic to weaknesses in others in the aftermath of his own mistakes, warm father figure, etc. These are all traits which are far more important to me than being strong with a lightsaber.

This wasn't a burst. Kenobi was too in control for it to just be a burst. Obi Wan wasn't naturally powerful, but his hard work and dedication made him powerful over time, a Jedi master and a member of the Council. He worked harder than anyone for that power. He was more dedicated to learning and mastering the Force than any other Jedi of his time. And yet, Obi Wan was always humble almost to the point of not recognising his own power. Remembering his duty to the Skywalker twins, he was able to restore his full power and connection to the force and used it to defeat Vader. He wasn't holding back like he did on Mustafar because he didn't want to fight his brother. He was fighting for the future of the Skywalkers and he unleashed the power he had always had but restrained the last time he fought Vader. His speed and use of the force surprised Vader who arrogantly believed, as he had for a long time, that he was more powerful than Obi Wan. I think a lot of fans need to learn, as Vader learned twice, Obi Wan deserves more credit and respect than he gets. He's fought Vader three times. Twice he's outmatched and beaten Vader. Do it once and maybe it's luck. Do it twice and.... well, there's no such thing as luck.

Obi Wan was always the SMARTER duelist. Fully aware of his own strengths and weaknesses, also very humble as shown where he despised blasters, but when outmatched or outnumbered, would resort to using blasters after calling them "primitive" before. A thing to note: Love is at the center of MANY emotions. Feeling emotional pain comes from loss. Loss comes from love. Loss can turn into hate because emotions don't simply vanish; they change, yet their root remains the same. It is why hate can be so powerful for the Sith, and love so powerful for the Jedi; they're from the same source, but love is far closer to the source, or very well IS the source. It's why Vader is so much more powerful when keeping his composure: he's finding the power derived from love in the storm of his rage, though he may not even realize that's what he's doing. He just know it works. So Obi-Wan is so powerful here because he finally decides to connect with love, an emotion inherently derived from connection to the world around you, and thus the force. It is why Obi-Wan could finally see a certain someone at the end; he's connected to the world around him finally and not shutting himself out.
@taten007

Not only that but hate has a lot more emotions closer to it then love does. Anger, jealousy, sadness, regret and so on. Where as love really only has love, and joy. There’s more emotions to give power in the dark side. At least that’s how I’ve come to terms with it.

Agree with this! This is exactly why Luke becomes so immensely powerful when he reaches his grandmaster tier, and is immensely powerful even at his younger, more inexperienced age. This is also why we see Jedi like Ezra Bridger becomes so powerful so fast. Ezra is also stated to have a very high midichlorian count close to Sidious or Yoda’s count which does below with his abilities but that’s beside the point. He lost everything as a child, and it’s his love and utter devotion for his friends that fuels him.

I think desperation brought the raw offense out of him. If he didn't give it his all to win, everything could be potentially lost. I also think part of the reason Obi won is because Vader/Anakin was so familiar with Obi and how he fights. Obi was always defensive, so a sudden radical shift in his fighting style probably took Vader off guard and let Obi Wan get the advantage in the duel.

The Obi-Wan episodes are epic and explains all of the questions I've had all of these years like why was Vader afraid of him. Now I know fully why, he was the only Jedi who humbled him twice. As a whole man and as a machine, Vader has never been able to defeat him no matter his vaunted strength. He'll always be Obi-Wan student, never his master. Him accepting that and through the love of his son let him embrace it and he became immortal with his brother in arms.

Obi-Wan exploited 2 weaknesses of Vader : his breathing apparel, and his lack of mobility. Ben has his natural limbs which allows him to move effortlessly unlike Vader, who maybe stronger in sheer force, but lacks composure in their duel. Obi-Wan is composed, focused and fully engaged. And what an epic battle it was, when Ben goes to the offense, wow! One can truly guess how powerful could Yoda and Mace Windu could turn out, when they mixed anger and focus/calm. Nah, it’s because it’s a TV show, and the only way they could meet again within the confines of this universe is to tell an improbable story of how Obi didn’t get ruthlessly murdered by the hands of Darth Vader Anikan Skywalker. There is no series with them meeting up to fight without Obi escaping and if they are going to fight in the context of a television show, then they have to bend reality somehow to keep Obi alive so they don’t completely ruin the universe, which doesn’t really need to be said because it’s that obvious.

So many people underestimate Obi Wan's abilities in the force. Obi Wan was anything but a showboat and only pursued power for the sake of helping others. Obi Wan had some serious power and skill, and when he goes into all business mode, you get a taste of his true power. Like when he fights Darth Maul on Naboo and he kicks it into high gear after seeing Qui-Gon run through, even Maul had trouble adjusting and catching up to Obi Wan's speed, getting his saber staff cut in half. Or when he finally puts an end to Maul to protect Luke. Took him out in three moves! Or when he beat Darth Vader in ROTS. Yet people always have stupid excuses as to why Obi Wan wins. It's ridiculous! So it's very refreshing to see Obi Wan cut loose and put on a display of his true power in the force and give a very powerful ten year vet Darth Vader an ass whooping.

I don't think it was love and duty that gave him power. I think he let go of his attachment to the past and realized that the force is about the future. His flashbacks are starting about all his regrets in the past and end with him looking at the future. He's also saying it to the rebels "you are the future" and he also accepts that Luke has to grow up as just a boy and not be under constant surveillance until he shows his connection to the force. There he let's go of the attachment of "having to train Luke and his duty" (as you put it) and accepts that he has to trust the force over everything. He's literally saying it "The future will take care of itself". It's not his compassion, duty and love that gives him the power, it's realizing that the force isn't about dwelling on attachments to the past and trust in the will of the force. He realized that it's not the will of the force for him to end this conflict, but the purpose of Luke and Leia to do so, which is also why he didn't kill Vader, in my opinion. He accepted that whatever happens, has to happen.

He was never straight-up strong in the force, he had to work for everything and in one episode, they made him capable of overpowering one of the strongest duelist's ever. Whole duel on mustafar was kenobi on the defensive because that's all he could do. Yk jedi master kenobi... the master of soresu... and the embodiment of what it means to be a jedi through dedication and commitment rather than raw power. Thought that was why he was so beloved. Now we're supposed to believe he is stronger than that version, doesn't make smarter decisions, but j has an emotional anime/disney moment and can now push back fcking darth vader with not j the force but saber swings too like yeah that adds up with what we know about the characters... My interpretation of this duel is that this is the moment Kenobi finally becomes connected to the living force. Ever since he was a young man in episode 1 Qui Gon had instructed Obi Wan to be mindful of the living force as his master was, and throughout the prequel trilogy we see that Kenobi doesn’t follow in his master’s footsteps, but rather becomes the poster child of the dogma of the Jedi order. He is extremely skilled, but still solely relies on his own (relatively weak) connection to the force as he believes he is duty bound to do. Throughout the Kenobi series we are shown Ben falling back on his “duty” as laid out in the Jedi code and by Yoda at the end of ROTS. For the first half of the series he doesn’t want to be doing the things he’s doing, he just feels he is supposed to because he is a Jedi. Its only after he connects with Leia that he begins to WANT to work with others and take a stand against Vader. He starts drawing power from more than just himself and his duty, but also from his allies and their passion for what is right. Its important to note that the Path is made up of people the Jedi would historically have defended, but who are now stepping up to protect the Jedi and doing it without force powers. They are a lesson to Ben about how one person, no matter how powerful, is not enough to stop evil. So in that moment under the rubble, Ben finally lets go of the last of his sole reliance on his own power. He lets his love of the Skywalkers, including Anakin, come to the forefront and he becomes connected to the living force through them. When we see him go on the offensive next, he’s not only using his power, the force itself is strengthening him through his connection to it. This explains two things that happen after the duel as well. First, he stops butting heads with Owen over how Luke is being raised. He realizes that protecting Luke is not a job he can do by himself, and puts his faith in the force connecting him to Luke when he is needed (it does in episode 4). Finally, after decades Ben is able to reconnect with Qui Gon, his old master. After all these years, he has finally accomplished the first task we see his master give him. He heads into the desert a fundamentally changed man, and starts the journey to the wise master we will see in ANH. Wow, didn’t mean for this to be so rambly. Thanks to anyone who stuck through the whole thing.

I like all the theories that have come out. I believe two different incidents encapsulate how Obi-Wan is at the height of his powers here & how he was able to defeat Vader. First, we get some insight from Master Yoda in Empire. He tells Luke during training: Luke asks if the Dark Side is stronger. “No, quicker, easier, more seductive.“ Just like committing a crime. A person can steal something without having to pay for it which is seductive & easier than having to work & earn to pay for something. Anyway, Luke then asks how he will know the light from the dark side. Master Yoda sternly states “You will know when you are calm, at peace….passive.” Another insight from Yoda is in this quote: “Only a fully-trained Jedi Knight, with the Force as his ally, will conquer Vader and his Emperor.” Anakin was naturally gifted & intrinsically powerful. This along with other factors contributed to his arrogance & overconfidence. He didn’t have to work as hard because he was so powerful. Conversely, Obi-Wan worked ceaselessly at his crafted. He wasn’t naturally gifted but through sheer will, a great work ethic & endless optimism in the belief of the goodness of the Jedi’s way did Obi-Wan reach the peaks of being such a powerful Jedi trusting in the force as his ally. So it was a combination of things: being fully training, believing in himself & in the hope for a better future especially with the Skywalker children but we gain even more insight from the incredible Part 5 flashbacks of Obi-Wan & Anakin training on Coruscant. Here we get a glimpse of Obi-Wan’s secret weapon. During the flashbacks we see Obi-Wan critic the arrogant Anakin who screams Obi-Wan’s “gonna lose.” We see a glimpse of Anakin’s aggressive side because “mercy doesn’t defeat the enemy” which is a portent of the Mercy Obi-Wan will show a defeated Vader later. Further on during the flashbacks we see Anakin’s incessant desire to win & his need to always prove himself blinds him to the more important things. Anakin’s aggression & blinding need for victory & to prove himself no matter the cost is the polar opposite Yoda talked about in his “at peace…calm…passive” wisdom. Anakin always shifts back & forth between being overly aggressive as opposed to being calm. Anakin bounces between arrogance & humility. He knows he should be calm but desires more power & validation which blinded him. We learn so much from the flashback training duel scene. All the seeds of Anakin’s downfall were small but there as we look back on all the moments that sent him down the dark side path. Conversely the final nugget to Obi-Wan reaching the height of his powers was that including all of Yoda’s wisdom which we see in Obi-Wan like calmness & being at peace…Obi-Wan’s greatest gift besides his hard work was his supreme ability to be balanced. Anakin was unbalanced as he let bad emotions get the better of him. Obi-Wan was always even keeled never at risk of succumbing to anger or fear. He is even keeled which along with his hard work gave him laser focus & made him a powerful jedi. Episode 6 was amazing & the second Vader vs Kenobi fight was incredible. It was emotional & moving. We really see how a a fully-trained Jedi Knight like Obi-Wan who trusts in the force & believes in the good & the light is able to overcome the passion & power of the Sith. What a sight to behold. It also buttresses the idea or maybe revalidates that Obi-Wan is one of the most pivotal & important characters of the Episode 1-6 saga. He should be revered as being one of most impressive Jedi Kights to have ever lived as well. Master Yoda & Mace Windu have competition. Anyway, got a little more long winded than I had hoped but wanted to thoroughly explain my theory on Obi-Wan in Own Mode. Probably watched the fight 10 times already. Keep up the great work Stupendous.😉

Obi wan is my favorite Jedi character in all of star wars cannon because he's a tragic character. When he was made a Jedi knight and given Anakin as a Padawan it was a massive mistake, he was truly a powerful Jedi destined for greatness but he was no qui Gon, he was powerful but he was inexperienced, and to essentially raise a kid like Anakin who had experienced so much trauma already he was wholly unprepared. Then you throw that same traumatized kid into the middle of a war zone while he's developing God like powers and expect obi wan to be able to counsel him with life experiences he's never had? Obi wan did everything he could but he couldn't save Anakin from his own self doubts, and in that final battle against his greatest failure vader he saw all of his mistakes but now he's lived 10 years as a man not a Jedi monk and realizes in that moment he won't fail luke and Lelia like he failed their father and channels all of that love and pain into force power rivaling yoda. It's an epic conclusion to such a great character, and sets forth the path luke walks, emotion makes the force stronger, but you must control your emotions and understand them, to lose yourself to them is the path to the dark side l, but on the far opposite side to feel nothing is to be weak in the force as you are a being foregoing living to understand the force which is the essence of life, how can you cherish and love life, the force if you've never allowed yourself to feel things like love, or pain? Obi wan mastered the force in that last battle and it was amazing. In their battle hate refined more than steal had made Anakin stronger than the former emotionless monk obi wan could ever be but an obi wan for the first time feeling the unconditional love that only a father could feel was able to overcome even Anakin's hate for a man that mutilated him left to fester for over 10 years.

I think while obi wan is no longer in his physical prime, he has through his abstinence of the force received enlightenment. Like you said, it is never about ignoring emotion or not having emotion, but to rely and feel those positive emotions and be fueled by them. He has attained something that he had once before in his first fight with Maul. He had the emotion to fuel his connection with the force. This leads to him being like a dam for the force where usually only small amounts of water come through. But this emotion opens every valve in him wide. He has more access to the force and can let the force operate through him. That is why his instincts and his fighting prowess came back. He might not remember but the force does. And that reinvigorated him to the point he could beat vader in a direct battle.

Star Wars fans care way too much about hypothetical power levels and not enough about feats and actual wins. Obi-Wan’s track record is easily one of the most impressive in that regard.

I never understood how the Jedi could so badly misinterpret The Chosen One prophecy. To bring balance to something requires knowledge of both sides or all sides. Without experience you cannot know what is out of balance meaning you cannot attain balance. So Anakin would never have always been in the light as the Jedi had hoped. I'm sure they thought of "balance" as all light no dark, but that's not balance, it's domination.

He definitely leveled up here, not only shown by beating Vader but by finally seeing Qui-Gon's force ghost. Gotta say I like this theory, as I have always felt that the prequel Jedi Order was too fearful of emotional attachments, forgetting that not all emotions are negative and being somewhat hypocritical as Jedi still mourn the passing of others (even to the point of attending funerals). Personally I like the idea that the prequel Jedi were flawed in their understanding of the FORCE and what balance truly meant due to their flawed view that emotional detachment would protect them from falling to the DARK SIDE!

I’m glad you raised this point. The Jedi were good, but they were also wrong. Though Anakin fell to the Dark Side, it was necessary to bring balance back to the force. I don’t agree with all the killings, but it did ultimately balance out an otherwise bloated and potentially tainted side of the Force.

While plot certainly allows Mace "fellouta" Windu to come back under the "we never saw a corpse" principle, he would've been public enemy number 1 for his treason and hunted mercilessly if no splattered remains were found under the window, and this all took place at the heart of Palp's political power rather than some backwater, so it's completely reasonable to think he either died of the fall or was subsequently hunted down and killed.
