False Alarm during a Halloween on the High Seas Disney Cruise sends passengers into a panic. Towel Folding class gets cut short as a loud alarm occurs.

I found out about this via some Disney forum. Why didn’t this make the news?
@SportSoulLife5 жыл бұрын
MrAwesomedude808 As someone who works on ships, youd be surprised how many false alarms there can be. These are mostly silent. Its normal to get 3-10 false fire alarms a week. The most alarms ive encountered (counting out navigational equipment that annoys you every 5 minutes) in a day was around 200 when a system failed, all were silent except for two "abandon ship" alarms to the engine room. We got it fixed the same day. In this case Im guessing that a Cadet on the bridge got curious and pushed the general alarm button. Not unheard of for cadets/trainees to put their fingers/noses where they dont belong.

SportSoulLife this wasn’t a completely false alarm though. I think at least. My guess is because there was a small fire onboard before so I think they sounded the alarm on purpose but it got extinguished shortly after so they “cancelled” the signal

SinCity Housewife Its an interesting thing with people. In crisis situaions, 70% of people become "sheep". They will do whatever someone tells them. If noone tells anything they will just wander aimelessly. This is why you have the crew repeating over and over again what to do and how to put on your lifewest. This is kind of like in the film "Finding Nemo" where nemo tells everyone to swim down. You belong to this group, which explains your reaction. 10% become heroes, these are good to put to use (aid instructing on how to put on lifewests for example), dont let them be without a task, else they start thinking of some own (often harmful) plan and try to get the other 70% with them. 15% completely freeze up, these can be hard to handle, as they are like the 70% but wont listen to orders 5% become violent, these thypically will try to get other people violent/panicked too. Its very important that these people get seperated from the crowd so they dont cause chaos.
@SportSoulLife5 жыл бұрын
SinCity Housewife my percents can be somewhat off, was a while ago since i renewed my certificate for that, but they are in the ballpark anyways.
@SportSoulLife5 жыл бұрын
SinCity Housewife this is also why you always hear "stay calm", not "dont panic". The 70% will not follow the order "dont panic", as humans always do what they are told not to do, but "stay calm" is an order, and as they now have a task, that keeps them relaxed since they know what to do. Next bit is "follow instructions from the crew", which gives them the second task, find someone from the crew and they will tell you where to go and what to do.
@KelseyKonishi5 жыл бұрын
That's interesting! Thank you for sharing. And we never know what category we are in until the situation happens. People may think "I would do such and such" but their response may be different.

Good advice if an alarm goes off on a ship and it’s real, don’t use the elevators. When the RMS Lusitania was torpedoed in 1915, passengers met their doom when using elevators to get to the boat deck and the power went out. They were unable to get out. Numerous survivors remember hearing the screams of the people trapped.

Normally, when the signal is given, the bridge will send a signal to the elevators to stop on the next available floor and disable them. Every time ive been on a ship, they disable the elevators just before and during the muster drill (back when you had to physically muster) to simulate a real emergency situation.
