The AristoCats would be the cat version of Lady & the Tramp except that Duchess has her kittens to begin with, & thus O'Malley ends up as sort of a stepdad to them. Whereas Lady has her puppies near the end of her film, with Tramp as the bio dad.

Great review dude. I used to watch this movie A LOT when I was a kid, and it was one of my favorite Disney films. Truth be told, it still is one of my favorites, but at the same time it is rather simplistic and one of the less admired films in general. The best part of this film is undoubtedly the music, especially with Everybody Wants to Be A Cat, still such a high quality, fun, energetic, jazzy song. Oh and THANK YOU for stating how certain scenes feel out of place and take time away from the main plot. This is especially true of the scenes with the 2 dogs, Napoleon and Lafayette. I was watching those scenes on KZbin and I realized that as funny and entertaining as they are, they add NOTHING to the film, and it wouldn't change a damn thing if you cut them out. So I'm glad I'm not the only one who shares this opinion. However I can forgive the scenes with the Geese cause after all, they did help Duchess and the kittens get back to Paris, so there is a bit of a connective tissue with that.

Even though this was my favourite Disney film as a kid, the only reason I still watch it is due to nostalgia. I don't think there's much substance to it, it's mostly just for the kids. That being said, I can definitely see why Marie is now one of the most marketed Disney characters of all time (alongside Dumbo, Pluto, and Patch) and also why the music is so iconic. I also really love the animation on Edgar and the lawyer. It's so detailed - I think it's fantastic. I think you missed out, in the Legacy section, that Marie has become one of the most popular Disney characters of all time, especially in Florida and Japan. But aside from that, great review! I look forward to the retrospective! :)

I like the Aristocats a little bit, but I don't love it. What I do like about The Aristocats is the three kittens. I like how the youngest kitten is a boy, which means the family is not falling into the big-brother-little-sister stereotype. I also like how even when the kittens get into trouble, the Duchess does not act too harsh around them. She tries to make them get a long in a calm and compassionate way. And as much as I love the child actors more, I will have to confess I am impressed at all the adult actors who got to work in this movie; Paul Winchell, Bill Thompson, Thurl Ravenscroft, Phil Harris and Eva Gabor. If I wanted to have a favorite adult voice from this movie, it would actually have to be Scatman Crothers. Why? Because it was he who would voice Jazz in Transformers (Generation 1), one of my sixteen favorite animated television series. My main problem with the Aristocats is there are some story parts that are boring; the dog scenes and the goose scenes especially.

Kind of ironic how this and Bambi were originally going to be in live action. but I can see why they would go with 2D since at the time it would've been difficult to make a real animal look like it's talking. At least the technology we have now at least can make that more possible. Thanks to films like Babe.

love this movie, a little slow at times and had aged a bit but overall it's a swinging good time. I always appreciated that O' Malley was a rough cat but knew how to treat a lady and was oddly classy the whole movie. He was willing to father 3 kittens because he wanted the girl and was a good man. I feel like he teaches a subtle lesson there that many would benefit from. Overall I'd say the movie is a little rough around the edges but it there for you when you need it.

@1992disney9 жыл бұрын
The film, mostly Marie herself, is extremely popular in Japan because you can find a ton of merchandise there. I think it's because of the cuteness of the kittens, the cats of Japan's culture and the fact that it appeals to a lot of Japanese girls, teenage girls, and young women. You can also find some merchandise at Disney Stores in the US, ranging from plush toys to mugs to Tsum Tsums (even though they're mostly Marie-related). To be honest with you though, I find the movie really boring. It's mostly due to the scenes that go on for too long and serve little to no purpose to the plot like you said, Edgar being one of the worst and lamest Disney villains of all time, and the characters don't seem that interesting for me to care about and get attached to. It's even considered to be a rip-off of 101 Dalmatians due to similar plot lines. The only thing I liked about the movie is Marie, because of her sassiness and cuteness. But if you like the movie, good for you. I won't argue with you about it.

I learned more about "The Aristocats" here than I ever knew. I knew that there was a live-action version planned originally, but I never knew the details, nor of the plot to find homes for the kittens to express their talents. This is not one of my faves, but I happened to watch it lately since I got the bluray for Xmas, so your timing is perfect. Personally, I think the story is lame, the animation sloppy, and Reitherman's directing choices suspect. But that's just me. Keep the vids coming, Joe.
@cliftoncoles64519 жыл бұрын
+Clifton Coles It occurs to me that, if they had followed the plot idea of seeking out homes for the kittens, this movie could have turned out episodic in the same was as "The Sword in the Stone" and "The Jungle Book"--you know, with separate segments strung together by a loose plot device. Consequently, "The Aristocats" has a tighter story than the other Reitherman films (including "Robin Hood").

Madame Adelaide Bonfamille (Aristocrats) actually looks like Lady Tremaine (Cinderella). Its Ironic that Madame Adelaide and Lady Tremaine look like a combined character combination to make Cruella De Vil -(Cruel Devil)- One Hundred and One Dalmatians). Both animations (Aristocrats and One Hundred and One Dalmatians are actually parallel to one another. Cats and Dogs. Seeing how One Hundred and One Dalmatians was actually something Walt did want to do, he still found a little swig of distaste in his wine for the one-of-a-kind animation that side-stepped the conventual (and usual) style of his mainstream fantasy animations. At the end of Walt's life he actually forgave the production of One Hundred and One Dalmatians, coming to grips with it actually being a recognized piece of animation. Though it was not at the top of his list.

@JoeTheDisneyGuy9 жыл бұрын
+Kristy120700 For me at least, where the scenes differ is that I didn't find the Siamese cats to be offensive, necessarily, as opposed to Asian-ish characters. Here, when you have the stereotypical speech (replacing L's with R's), the conical hat, the chopsticks, the Egg Foo Yung lines, it gives a more offensive vibe to me. His imagination would go nuke the minute he see's how technology has evolved (and probably be sad for how hand drawn is practically dead). Great review Joe! I'm glad I finally found someone who didn't think it was all too great, but wasn't necessarily a bad one either. Just curious, have you watched say Out Of The Vault or gone to the website 54disneyreviews.wordpress.com? I only ask because the people on in both cases reviewed this film as well and pretty much called it a mediocre copy of both Lady & The Tramp and 101 Dalmatians. I don't know if I would say that's necessarily the case. It may be similar to both, yes, but Disney may go somewhat new with this one. I would probably give this one maybe a B-, maybe a B or something like that. As far as the potential sequel or TV series goes, I would rather they had come up with that idea around say 2002 or 2003 than wait until around 2005 for that to be the case. I only say that since, well, I guess after John Lasseter took over the studio in early 2006, he decided that no sequel to Disney Animated Features should be made by Disney Toon studios ever again. I would say that I agree and disagree with his decision at the same time. Allow me to explain. I agree because many of those direct-to-video sequels weren't all that good and I disagree because I would have been curious as to what the sequel and series for this would have been like. Oh well! I guess now, we'll never know. Anyway, great review once again!

I never minded Uncle Waldo, but man any scene with those two dogs just drags on forever! My biggest problem with this movie is the villain. His motivation is week and every decision he makes in the film is just dumb. I mean stop and think about it. He thinks he won't out live the cats to inherit the money? Which is bull. They're cats! All he has to do is just spend the money anyway he wants and then claim it's for the cats, duh! Plus the going back for the hat and other stuff was pointless. And then he tries to ship them off to Timbuktu. Like the people working at the post office are going to here them cry and meow and find them! Ugh, I just want to scream at Edgar every time he shows up on screen, cause he is such a moron. However all the good stuff you stated saves the film for me. Plus it is to date the only Disney animated film to have a single mother be the main protagonist. Which is really cool.

Great review, just started this disney series of yers and so far it's wildly entertaining. However, I don't think the siamese cat is racist at all and if people think it is...that's fine. But keep in mind what racism actually means: making a négative comparisment between races in which one is portrayed inferior. I'm highly questioning that's happening here with the siamese. Yes, it's kind of a stereotype but maybe people can be a bit too easily offended by the most minor things. Now of course much can disagree with me, I am véry against any form of racism and I mean by no means any offence with this comment to anyone:). But I really think there are worse things out there than this lovable siamese cat, now? And: selfhumor is a charming characteristic, dears.

I still love the movie but I can see that it is one of the lowest in terms of epic storytelling. It´s mostly really simple but fun. I mean I die of laughter during Edgar running from the dogs scenes. Funny how plenty of the voices from Jungle Book returned in Aristocats. Similar in Sweden, our Kaa also voiced the little mouse and our King Louie did Scatcat. Dutchess voice funny enough went to become Bianca in the Rescurers and O´Mally went and did the voice for Sebastian in the Little Mermaid. It´s also funny about the siamees cat. A lot of people seems to just think he is funny then a racist stereotype. And do you know about the Marie merchandise? Great video but the year is wrong it was 1970 not 1971.

+diskid02 Yeah, I realized that after the fact but didn't have time to fix it. I think I had the "most popular movie of 1971" fact on the brain and just typo'd it.

Why are you doing a review on Disney in the dark? I thought Disney was supposed to be lit up and magical? Not dimmed waiting for a monster to pop out from Resident Evil or Silent Hill.

i love Disney films they share similar animations starting with Sleeping Beauty all the way to The Fox and The Hound the way they look more pencil drawn instead of how they were in the Late 30's 40's and 50's and how they use recycled animations and finding similar objects from their previously films like for example that truck you see that picked up the evil butler near the end of The Aristocats is actually the same truck from 101 Dalmatians they use to get home

Stereotypes are usually 100% true and get rid of it and not showing it is not going to fix it just accept the fact that we want to have fun if we are afraid of stereotypes you are a boring individual PS I like your videos but please stop bringing up the whole racist argument because it's boring

The Aristocrats and Sword in the Stone are probably the two weakest if the Disney 'classic' animated features. Both were underwritten and had almost non existent villains. Edger the Butler was especially weak.

He was also more supposed to be a comic relief than a "great villain"
