It's not just Star Wars, Disney has committed brand suicide. For nearly a century Disney represented families and childhood. EVERYONE grew up watching Disney cartoons, wanting to go to Disneyland. They didn't always stand for quality (we all remember the dark days of the direct to video sequels), but they never abandoned their audience. They bought Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Fox to expand their audience. And it should have. Those companies make products that everyone loves like Disney does, but while Disney is primarily for girls, those companies aimed primarily for boys. They could have owned the childhoods of boys and girls around the world for decades to come...and they gave it all up for the mythical modern audience and a bizarre emphasis on the adult values of rainbow alphabet representation based on nothing other than ideology. I've never seen anything like it in my life or my understanding of history and economics.

@@Red_Lanterns_Rage I grew up in the 80s and 90s. I watched it all as well. Three Stooges with my Dad, Loony Toons, SW, Gi Joe....There was a ton of good media to go around back then. We were spoiled for choice. Disney was a big part of that, if not for you, definitely for me and a lot of others. I still have all my old clamshell vhs tapes of nearly every disney movie ever made. It is sad for a lot of people to see them destroy their brand to appeal to a small minority of adults.

Can you imagine if every movie and streaming series would have been a masterclass in storytelling, respecting the lore and the legacy characters? Disney would be drowning in money, and its streaming platform would have been a success just for having Star Wars. I want to describe Disney's handling of Star Wars as incompetence, but that doesn't really make sense. There was low hanging fruit, and they actively ignored it. I think it was more like a principal agent problem, because the people managing this frachise, at all levels, are evidently operating under a quite different set of incentives than it seems from the outside. What did they get out of it than they valued more than traditional professional success?

Hollywood has moved to a „the audience is toxic and needs constant education“ stance a couple of years ago. It may just be a result of living in a bubble of that basic assumption. When everyone gets high on the idea that they are so much better than the audience, it can potentially cloud their mind. We should also not forget that Disney specifically moved over to not hire fans or even people that know the source material. There has been put a lot of effort into distancing themselves from fans and normies.
@josephfisher426
@josephfisher426 2 ай бұрын
@@davidgantenbein9362 But they seem to be even less competent at education of their toxic audience than public schools are with toxic students. I suppose that the streaming model allows a Disney to be self-deceptive to some extent... they can tell themselves that people are signing up for the new content when they are really just watching the classics... but at some point the people with the sharp pencils are going to turn up, like they did at Paramount.

Not only that, i am a 52 year old action figure collector. i have been collecting 3 3/4" scale action figures since 90, the last several years action figures have been sort of dying out as seemingly many less kids play with action figures today rather than video games and electronic devices. and the action figures that are being made the toy companies are mostly trying to force collectors into the 6" scale. the reason i bring this up is because Hasbro is still making a smaller amount of 3 3/4" action figures, but those figures are peg warming the shelves because they are mostly characters from the Disney tv shows and NOBODY wants them. so Hasbro is being sort of screwed over because these are the figures Disney want them making but no one is buying them. and 3 3'4" collectors are being screwed over because they barely want to make figures for us anymore in the first place and the lack of sales of theses Disney characters just gives them more reason to justify killing off that scale. i am going to assume someone at OREO was smart enough to make a deal that if they license the property they want the original characters on their product.

Someone else here mentioned the impulse to "deconstruct" characters and insert the self or politics. I think an interview with Alan Moore sheds a little light on this impulse. Writers like Gaiman and Pratchett were part of an earlier wave of post-modern writers from a time when they did clever things like "What if Death decided on a career change?" This style of writing is predicated on deconstruction of ideas in a way anathema to classical philosophical presuppositions but led to highly creative scenarios. Alan Moore was part of this wave, but he was also a Hermeticist, which bound him to Middle- and Neo-Platonic ways of thinking. He remarked in an interview that other post-modern writers were obsessed with deconstruction and never reconstruction, or, in his occult terminology, "all *_solve,_* no *_coagula."_* Writers like Pratchett recognized that the deconstruction required at least some reconstruction, which is why in his Discworld novel _Mort,_ Death is compelled to return to his position as Death after a short stint as a fry cook (even if he is a little laxer on the rules now). Younger, less competent authors who grew up in the shadows of these _competent_ post-modern writers latched onto the deconstruction of genres, tropes, etc. as a flag for shared influence (identifying the social peers they regard as relevant) and a mark of cleverness (personal status). As time has gone on, the latter has completely dominated the former as functional illiterates have picked up on the lowest-resolution version of this social game. Regardless of how far downstream from the likes of Gaiman, Moore, and Pratchett these writers are, though, identifying clever deconstruction as the *_goal_* doesn't provide a roadmap for satisfying conclusions, which requires more knowledge of what they're actually subverting than these storytellers actually have. Instead, they fill that gap with personal politics or self-insert characters, because they've latched onto the shallow "cleverness = peer status" game and hitch every other status game they're playing to the project. It's a social primate "monkey-see, monkey-do" phenomenon.

Along those lines is the saying that you need to know the rules in order to break them, and hack modern writers have totally missed the first part. I think Chato discussed in another video that the emphasis on deconstructionism and upending the audience's expectation is so much the norm that people are starved for authenticity and sincerity, especially when said deconstructionism is done so poorly

@@andrewbunch2394 "Knowing the rules in order to break them" is a little narrower in the focus of craft than what I'm talking about here, which is the motivation for behavior. You're focusing on what they're failing to do as storytellers. I'm telling you they're misidentifying the problem because they're *_not_* storytellers. They're playing a social game where they get to posture their self-perceived cleverness to a limited peer group. They go this route because it's the easiest and most effective way to play that particular game. Toying with the meta-structure of a story is something they've been taught is a clever thing to do, as is "subverting" any expectations that come with a work. When you have zero meaningful experience with something, that "subverting" is made all the easier because you can take a glance at something and turn one thing upside down and receive points in the social game. Telling a meaningful story requires actually having something to say that is relevant in the face of the content of the story. This is to be avoided at all costs because it's wasted labor, taking away attention from what you're doing in the game. Lore doesn't matter. What came before doesn't matter. Being seen as clever and therefore fashionable and a "creative" by your peers is *_all_* that actually matters. This has even sucked in people who were once capable of decent storytelling, like Steven Moffat. When you realize the game these people are playing, you'll realize that there's no improving their storytelling. They won't listen to criticism, because critique like "you need to know the rules (of Star Wars/Ghost Busters/etc.) before you can break them" is completely alien to what they're actually doing, which is a form of intellectual self-gratification without the need for substance or effort.

Star Wars was finished when Disney bought the IP from George Lucas. Ever since something else I call "Disney Star Wars" has replaced it, and in my opinion, it hasn't been worth watching since.

"LOUD NOISES" (In a Steve Carell voice) An interesting observation and choice of packaging design for sure. Pity the Oreo's don't taste like their late 70's counterparts, when ingredients like Butter, Sugar and Milk were used and not High Fructose Corn Syrup, Palm Oil and Artificial Flavor No.55.

I agree that Star Wars is past saving. They have dug themselves a hole that they cannot get themselves out of. They are trapped by their own rules that they've invented for their Star Wars universe, and everything they do from here on out will smell of it. Might as well retire the brand.

I watched the last three movies. ooo Luke and Darth. So Return of the Jedi, Revenge of the Sith, and The Force Awakens. I really don't have any feeling for the plot of those three movies. And Come on white Snake had a new album in 2019 and were on a farewell tour in 2023, with fleetwood mac, so they are much more relevant than Star Wars.

When Disney bought Star Wars who'd think they would employ the South Park Underwear Gnome business principles.. 1. Aquire Star Wars 2. ???? 3. Profit Any old school Hollywood executive would have made a fortune if he was put in charge of a franchise like Star Wars. Some better than others but I'd wager even the worst case scenario would have left somewhere to take the franchise after a bad motion picture unlike Disney Star Wars.

Yeah, its done, as is every other franchise. The likes of Ford and Hamil trashed their legacy and made fools of themselves. We have had the best of all the franchises in the original releases. They can never be bettered. All the talent and creativity left the building a long time ago.
